Based on the book by Farley Mowat of the same name, Sea of Slaughter is a hard hitting indictment, and an extraordinary natural history of the Northwestern Atlantic Ocean and bordering shores. Incredible historical footage is blended with gorgeous images of marines creatures and the environment. Released in 1989, it was the first major documentary film to reveal the extent of the ecological destruction in the Northwest Atlantic. Much of what it says still applies today.

I have watched this doco, maybe, 3 or 4 times before. Yes I had angst etc but those last few scenes with all those herring being caprtured on their spawning run and harvest for their roe. I thought the excess would go to the canadain salmon farms or some other use. To see them being dumped as landfill, that is a crime, it really is... Anyway tks for whoever posted this...

Big fan of Mowat . I learned to read with his books my first book i ever read was Owls in the family . My family fished those waters of the grand banks, my great grandfather warned everyone about over fishing and throwing the small ones over board which died and taking the breeding ones, they did a magazine article on him .

6:19 for every bird dropping on land about 12 to 13 brid droppings drop on the sea, thus fertilizing the phytoplankton that the planktonic fishes eats and causes them to multiply in vast numbers. But when the planktonic fishes were overfished the birds starved and were reduced in number and in turn reduces the number of bird droppings on both land as guano and fertilizer for the plankton which causes a further drop in planktonic fish populations for the natural self-fertilizing cycle was destroyed.

This is a very old documentary, but many espécies are still been killed to close or to their extinction today. It is amazing how destructive human beings are. The lack of respect for other espécies is very sad. I hope one day education of the young can change that. No more killing for sport or cultural purposes should be allowed.

UNREAL, I have culled Kangaroos in Northern Australia during droughts when there was no feed for either them or cattle. We had "TAGS" for them and we also 'Mustered them up and moved them to places where there was more feed. But this, 1 hit on the head and they start to skin them ALIVE....... This is just animalism at it's worst.

He complained that the main source of income to protect the waterfowl came from those who hunt them. It's true today nearly 30 years later that the majority of money to help save hunted animals comes from those who hunt them (animal rights activist only talk they don't invest) However that's a good thing that hunters invest as every waterfowl species that is hunted has increased in numbers since this video was first filmed. As too are most hunted species in North America. It was past hunting practices, unregulated numbers, that caused problems not today's hunting practices. In the 1800's a man could shoot as many deer as he could sell, today its illegal to sell wild game so a hunter shoots what he can to feed his family. Same with waterfowl, in fact there are daily limits and possession limits. So don't vilify today's hunter because of past slaughterers.

darthvader5300 Hey something has got to be done, I am a fisherman for sport, I grew up fishing with my Dad who was born in 1918 in Anaheim CA I am so blessed to have listened to him, when I first fished as a young boy fish were still plentiful in the late 60s early 70s mid 70s I noticed a huge decline so much so that people stopped fishing regulations kicked in people hated them but they worked the fish started coming back then something fantastic happened, a little phenomena called GLOBAL WARMING, THIS ALLOWED FOR INSECT POPULATIONS TO BREED MORE AND NOT HIBERNATE ALLOWING MORE OPPORTUNITY'S FOR FISH TO FEED MORE WARMER OCEANS ALLOWED POPULATION BOOMS BAITFISH CAME BACK TO NUMBERS THAT HAVE BEEN FORGOTTEN, we now as a human race will witness fish populations to rebound to NUMBERS we have not seen in our lifetime, I hate to say this but if the Oceans get to warm it will die like all the fish in the Salton Sea, I think we have passed the point of no return but we will enjoy it till it gets to warm. Regards,. Eric Underwood

Haven't they ever thought of studying, learning, and copying the sea's ecosystems and food chain cycles so as to duplicate them in the open seas inside a protective cable net enclosure against predators so as to multiply the populations of the species artificially while using the natural processes of nature's food chain cycles' ecosystems to recycle and reuse everything in balance? We did that experimentally for our inner space programs during the Cold War and for the colonization of space. And they are still being maintained up to this very day.

A video designed to be sickening, and it was to any modern sportsman and yes there is such a thing as a sportsman. That is not what was shown here or pretended that a sportsman is. Most of this was commercial exploitation and there is even room for that if it's managed and not wholesale slaughter like what was shown. You can thank the modern sportsman now as they do more to protect animals now than those who protest the killing of any animal. The modern sportsman puts far more dollars into saving the animals now than those who would hold a sign in protest of responsible use of our recourses.

Joseph Dodd there are no over population, actually there are the same amount of people as far back as 2000 years. The 2 Americas and Australia had millions of people most were slaughtered by Western Europeans and their Assets stolen. The motive were and still is profits, greed inculcated by Capitalism. The subjugation of the Africans and other Natives into slavery for free labour, sex, and yes food, cannibalised, hidden secrets! Do the maths all the people in the world can fit in the state of Alaska. The over population theory is promulgate by Capitalists, Bankers who wants more lands and resources under their control. Over population is a mitt, Nature balances human populations and there's billions of vast empty spaces on all the 7 continents. even in America 😂😂

I've always wondered why European humans are so needy of excess. If one fish will feed the family, they catch 5, 10 or 20, even though the bulk of it will be wasted. The exotic pets we need, are the few .... very few survivors of the transport from a far away place to our homes. If animals suffer greatly and needlessly .... so what! I don't doubt, near the end when we face extinction in the face, greed will speed the process and no one will care ....
