Een reis naar Indonesië in 1974 - a voyage to Indonesia in 1974 (English transcript below).
From January to May, 1974, I made a return trip from Europe to Indonesia in the Nedlloyd Lines cargo ship mv 'Nijkerk'. The Suez Canal at the time was closed after the 1967 war between Egypt and Israel, so we took the long route via the Cape of Good Hope, running at economical speed due to fuel oil prices. At Cape Town we took on provisions before continuing across the Indian Ocean. In Indonesia we called at several ports in the isles of Java and Sumatra.
This is an account filmed with an inexpensive 8mm camera. The image quality is not too good but these are historic scenes of cargo shipping almost 40 years ago. Some photo sequences were inserted to complete the picture. Sound effects were dubbed in.

Thankyou for sharing this great video. I recognize MV. Langkoeas the old KRL ship bought by an Indonesian company PT. Trikora Lloyd. I started my sea career on Board MV. Blitar a sister ship of MV. Langkoeas. This video brought back a lot of memories ... hartelijk bedank.

Thanks a lot for this. I was a Cadet Officer on a ship in the Indian Ocean at the same time in 1974 operating out of South Africa. I miss those days but I don’t regret giving it up. The pay was lousy and everybody was drinking a lot.

My parents took the same trip on board of the Willemruijs in the late 50's. They also had to go by Cape of Good Hope because of the Suez closure. I remember my dad telling a story about a passenger swept overboard at the Cape. Seeing those waves on this video, I understand. You could be thrown overboard instead being swept. I like blurry video & photos, they transform you back to those era. A feeling you can't get from a 4K video !.

Thanks - I am afraid I am too young to have sailed on the Willem Ruys, but I know someone who remembers those days well. The Suez closure in the late 1950s must have been after the 1956 war. In my case it was after the 1968 war, and I first passed through the canal again in 1975.

+Ted Polet Your very welcome. I thank you for posting these great videos of that bygone era. Quite the adventure. My Mom is from Denmark so freighters were the way she and my Dad traveled before the mid sixties.

Thank you very much, Mr Tumbelaka. I remember the name of the Blitar as well although these ships had been sold to Trikora Lloyd a few years before I went to sea. Glad you remembered!

Dear Sir.. thank you very much for taking the time to post this video. It is from the time of my youth as well and allows me to enjoy my own memories which still thankfully exist in my mind.. and allows me to relive them as if they were just yesterday. May I ask how old you were during these voyages? And I hope life has treated you well since then.. SALUTE!

Amazing footage! Is it possible for me to use and share this footage on my youtube page? I share footage from all kind of activities on our ocean. Cargo ships in the 1960s till now, oil rigs, fishing vessels, etc. Of course full credit will be given to the owner of the footage. Looking forward to your reply. Kind regards. Cheers.

Thanks, Francis - that must have been one of the more modern vessels with Stulcken heavy lift gear. I'm afraid I never sailed in such a ship - the most modern was Nedlloyd Kyoto which had quite different loading gear. I did however sail in the mv Spaarnekerk, which had a classic 120 ton boom over hatch #3. It was tested with a 10% overload after repairs to the mast, in a dockyard in Schiedam where I joined the ship.

I just subscribed to your channel and please do the same for me to see my cruise ship videos etc. Also may I use the sound of this video to add to a video of Dutch cargo ships and freighters from the past? Cheers from the Train Lord in South Australia
