captain Chris talked me through boat handling and was a HUGE help on learning how to handle my 40'LOA fly bridge. I was so nervous but after talking to him through comments I was WAY more confident now its been 2 years and I can handle it really good in all conditions. THANK YOU CAPTAIN CHRIS

Always use the wind to your favor when you can. He was smart to do what he did when he was backing in and saw he was off a little no need to rush and make a mistake you can always pull away and redo the setup and try again thats what I was taught to do.

He could have had it first time approaching into the wind and he had an option to do just that. This Sea Ray is highly maneuverable, too.

I’m moving up from a 25’ single engine to a 38 twin fly bridge with NO thrusters, the deal is done but having some anxiety about docking. I had no worries docking in any condition with my smaller cabin cruiser but I’ll be on fly bridge and won’t be able to grab pilings. I have a few skid loaders I own and I’m told it will be about the same with twin engines as far as steering- minus the wind and current 🤦🏻‍♂️. High anxiety starts now and boat isn’t even in the water yet.

I do better backing in than bow first. No thrusters and my boat is 15’ beam and my slip is 16’ wide. Most times never touch and I do not allow my guest to hang off the sides or go onto bow or swim platform. I do occasionally have to abort the first try when there’s a good cross wind. My slip is so tight once I’m in it couldn’t move if it tried too. I really don’t like for those on the dock to start pushing and grabbing the boat. Make the boat do the work. 90% of the time I’m by myself and you have to learn to handle without assistance. Had the same boat 20 years so I’ve pretty much dealt with all kind of situation at one time or another. Been lucky that I’ve never lost power on either engine at the wrong time.

Good to have the experience and skills you have. I agree when a "friend helps" and ruins your intended glide so you have to start the docking process over.

@@AskCaptainChris it was sarcasm as you are no expert if you have the option to stern in and you still say its better to bow in. the guy in the sedan doesnt realize you go into the wind to dock when you have that option not with it. #1 rule control your boat dont let it control you or let be controlled by anything but you

Different he did not panic, stayed in his comfort zone and got the boat into the slip assigned to him. I appreciate sarcasm but prefer encouraging words and always suggest practice when the weather is calm.

Captain Chris, in the video at the 50 sec. mark. It shows the captain with the wind at port and attemting a stern approch. To do so would it not be better to point the bow to port and attemt a stern in docking? This way the wind would push the boat straight and he could reverse both engines in to slip? Thanks for your input

It could have worked. But! The wind could have snagged him with your suggestion too. The issue with the wind this particular day was the gusting. Had he backed in on the first try with a little more authority then maybe he would have been “inside” the slip enough before the gust got him. What he did was reasonable and what you are suggesting is reasonable. As observers we can not feel what he was feeling. What he finally did worked too. No shame in trying something different. And frankly, I prefer stern out/bow in so everyone who walks by can’t see inside the saloon or any aft staterooms. But that’s another discussion for another day. 😎

A good captain knows his limitations. Too many try to throttle out of a situation and that's when deductibles start to get met.

@@davidowen1259 You don't know what you are talking about. He did a great job docking the yacht. Captain Chris himself even said so, and its his job to train new owners how to maneuver their yachts.

Clearly you didn't watch the whole video and listen to his comments yourself. Just because you can do better, doesn't mean you did wrong.

Geeeeeeez and l thought backing in my tractor trailer was hard, the wind speed definitely can be your friend or your enemy when backing in your boat, lm going to by a boat someday before l die, but l will definitely be taking lessons, watching a video and doing it live are two different animals, but great video,TY🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏

I don’t understand why one would dock downwind when, you dock upwind you have more control? I would have sailed pass the berth and dock upwind stern first in this situation?

We video what we see. We do not know the skills of the operator or the power the boat has. I am glad these opportunities are helpful to others watching.

Just my opinion but........go past the slip,turn around and come into the wind and back in. More control when into the wind or current

Tom Drummy that statement is correct. However, regardless of initial direction of attack, once he turned stern into the slip he was sideways to the wind. Gusting wind I might add. It just didn’t cooperate at first. His adjustment was successful in the end.

I disagree on letting the wind take control. I rather balance the stern first and swing the bow up the wind to align the boat and then back it to the slip decisively. Maybe is not so easy with these boats but for the catamaran is the best way

I agree with you, he let to wind to make to much drift of the boat, you need to control the wind, not wind has controled, how you can dock the boat backwards, when you drifting 2kt sideways.

He should have held his bow up into the wind more on his approach to backing in. He could have edged his stern in to get it out of the wind and controlled the bow with thruster.

Backing in would have been easier, just needed a shot on the bow thruster.

I prefer to bow in, I like my deck on the water side so when I sit on the back it is water i see and not deck and people.

We prefer to stern in because the sunset drops directly at our stern seating.

Yup. 2 engines. Add wind (and gusty wind at that) and it gets fun sometimes.

@@AskCaptainChris Yeah, I had a Catalina 42 sailboat. Single prop, so I had to become a master of the prop walk. Fun times... Yeah many times if its windy, I had to go in circles a bit to get in my slip.

dkchen and the wind on a power boat of this size with a big saloon and a fly bridge acts like a giant sail. 😎 No harm no foul in doing a few go-arounds until conditions are in your favor.

Never approach from up wind. His first attempt was all wrong blowing sideways losing control. Second attempt he came from down wind, going into the wind under control and into the slip the correct way. Bow first or stern first the same applies.

Different again I say- no one panicked and he arrive safely into his assigned slip. As neither of us were at the helm (but I was there filming) the wind was a factor including the fact that merely to arrive near the slip from the river he had no choice but to ride WITH the wind and he almost had it on the first try. 👍🏼

Boaters may have no choice in how the wind blows or the current takes you. He may not have wanted to back in stern first all the way from the entrance to the marina to his assigned slip.
