(Unless if whales become endangered species or class of them become endangered, then just like all animals, that will be regulated. But Sea Sheppards have a problem with whaling in general). Japanese are acting lawfully when they whale in international waters. Then use to do it within their quotas when they did it under scientific reasons. Now they left the 1980 agreement, and do it for commercial reasons. Short of not whaling some classes based on endangered status (if exist), no one get to tell them sea animals should be edible and which is not. Whaling is like fishing.

Personally I don’t have a problem with whaling in general whether it’s japan or native America, if it’s a good source they can get and people are eating it or have a culture etc as long as that it’s somewhat in control of the ecosystem

Unlike the Japanese ships no government support is given to them. Other governments may disagree and make laws against it but in the end they can't do anything about it. Sea Shepard can't employee lethals or anything long term due to this fact. They are civilians. And the Japanese populace supports the whalers. They are their family members and they have been whaling for centuries. They won't give up their traditions and the government enforces and defends them. In the end. They would need an entire fleet and a country to go to war. The fleet they fight is a small one and only one. Who knows how many the Japanese have.
