This engine got replaced with a brand new one due to some severe damage, and I really wanted to check out just exactly what happened. I was not prepared for the level of carnage I found.

Nice to see the procedure and what to look for. Working on a hydro-locked (from a garden hose with motor off) and figuring where to look next. Already removed and emptied intake, exhaust

With the intake and exhaust empty, getting it out of the cylinders and any intake piping or intercooler if it's supercharged, and you should be ready to start it up briefly, and then check that the oil isn't water contaminated. It's not awful as long as you catch it before it hydrolocks while running, which you obviously have. Hope you can get it going again!

The non supercharged seadoos are very solid machines. And perform great too! The early sc machines can be problematic, thankfully rotax did make improvements but those ceramic washers on the supercharger were a disaster! But they were spectacularly fast, especially for the time. I've got an 05 rxp 215 and it still feels too fast

My 2006 supercharged gtx got water right to the top of all the cylinders when I got a water tow (at about 30 mph didn't know I had to plug the exhaust back then). I was smart enough not to crank it without pulling the plugs but the water kept blowing out the cylinders no mater how much I cranked it. I finally used my oil sucker to drain at least a gallon of water out of the exhaust manifold side. A little more cranking, a bunch of fogging oil and new plugs later, worked perfectly, none the worse for the wear. I was surprised that absolutely no water got into the engine oil, the cylinder rings are really good. But thanks for the FYI on the intake manifold potential water build up. I will keep an eye on that now if the hull ever gets flooded.

With the supercharger it might have been helping to pump the water from the manifold into the cylinders, no evidence to confirm that, just theorizing what may have helped! Glad it all worked out well, if all the water is gotten out it is amazing how much any PWC engine will withstand, We work on a lot of rentals and they get flipped and sunk regularly, and keep running fine as long as we get the water out before the customer trys to start it.

Convenient as I have 2 tr1s sitting in the shop that tossed connecting rods out the side of the block from being hydrolocked. I will definitely be doing a full teardown on at least one of those, dunno if there is any chance for either one to be repaired with a new rod and take the case somewhere to be welded or something, we'll all find out when I pull them apart!

Very informative and useful video! I am currently working on a sunk 07 RXP 215. Is there a similar way to suck/drained water from the intake manifold like you showed earlier on the TR-1 engine?
@trythistv
@trythistv Жыл бұрын
Sadly there is no drain or anything on the seadoo manifolds, the best option is to unbolt the manifold, there are several e8 etorx, somewhere around 7 or 8 I believe and then you can pull it loose and tip it up on end, oftentimes you don't need to disconnect everything, there may be a few wires that have to be unplugged, but you can leave a lot connected, tip it up and open the throttle body and drain the water into the hull (it'll be hard to get it any further away. It may also be possible to pull the intercooler out the front enough to get a suction hose in like I did on the tr1 unflip video, but that would only apply on a 215hp machine that has the intercooler in the manifold, but I'm unsure of that, I have not tried that method yet but it just popped into my head.

I've got so many 215s I should pull apart. Typically supercharger failures that end up taking out the oil pumps and then bearings spin. I'll most likely be doing a few autopsy videos this winter. Hopefully your engine isn't horrible carnage!

@@trythistv I took it all apart yesterday and found piston bolts the 2 snapped off and made small hole through top case and hole into bottom I think it’s pretty much a write off , had lots of steel shavings by the oil screen area and in the filter lots of shred

Last year my dad left his 2011 sea doo speedster 150 neglected at the dock for months then when he finally took his trailer pulled it out of the water the engine bay was flooded. He drained the water then stored it for the winter. This summer he tried getting it running after months of neglect he pulled the spark plugs out then cranked the engine over it spat out tons of water. Then when he thought he got all the water out of the intake he put the spark plugs back in then cranked it over after 5 seconds of cranking over it started it ran for a few seconds before completely locking up. He took the spark plugs out then cranked it over tons of water came out again then it started knocking real bad. It got a rod knock. My dad recently got a new motor for the boat and I was helping him pull the blown motor and disassemble it. I took the intake manifold off and turned it vertical and opened the throttle body and tons of water came out. It sucks that if my dad didn’t leave his boat neglected at the dock he wouldn’t have his boat blow up

Yep. The intake design allows water to remain and get sucked up. Same thing happens with the newer Yamaha tr1 engines. Have to drain the manifold before starting. Real shame there isn't a built in drain of some kind.

Great video! Maybe you can help me with a problem I'm having on a 2013 seadoo gti130se. It has over a 1000 hours and got an overheat alarm. Turns out it had oil in the coolant but no coolant in the oil. I pressure checked the oil cooler and it didn't leak, so I decided to have the head milled and replace the head gasket. After all that work, I took it out for a test run. It was surging and wouldn't stay above 5000 rpm. Gradually though it started running normally. I was periodically checking under the seat for any leaks and all seemed good until after about 30 min I got an overheat alarm. Once again, the coolant tank overflow hose was spewing oily water, but no signs of water in the coolant. Any ideas what the problem could be??
@trythistv
@trythistv 11 ай бұрын
Could be the seal between the rear oil pump, the same shaft also drives the water pump, although in theory the weep hole should prevent water and oil ever seeing eachother. Past that, the cooler which you tested, head, block, is pretty much it. Could it be that you didn't get all the oil out of the system and had some big air pockets in there so it boiled over? Getting these full is done best with a vacuum filling setup. Pull the whole system under a vacuum and then let is suck the coolant in, otherwise you end up with some pockets of air in the ride plate and stuff that can cause an airlock or such if they get to the water pump.

@@trythistv I don't think so because the oil level was much lower after the test run. I'm now thinking of removing the PTO cover and checking the weep hole as a start. Thank you for your time..

@trythistv
@trythistv 4 ай бұрын
P0112 is for the intake air temp sensor being shorted to ground, I would check the harness with a multimeter to see if one of the iat wires is indeed shorted to ground, I've seen seadoo harness rub through and break wires before, dunno if that's helpful but it's a place to start at least.

What’s the best easy repair for a broken ignition coil ground wire. Can I splice a new ground connector to the OEM ground wire ?
@trythistv
@trythistv 11 ай бұрын
if we're talking about a 4 stroke seadoo, the ground for coils and injectors is provided by the ECU, switched on and off electronically, and +12v is provided either by the MPEM if yours has one, or the fuse box/main relay if you don't have an mpem. Unless we're talking about the newest 300hp style coils that bolt down and have the little tiny ground wire and ring terminal, in that case it would be fine to splice in a new wire and ring terminal to that wire, but not the 2 wires that go into the plug in connector.

English: If just enough water gets in, even at a low rpm it could crack or weaken pistons and rods, typically the non supercharged engines like the 155 and 170 have weaker cast pistons where the supercharged engines get forged pistons, did you get water into the engine at all or was it unrelated to any kind of hydrolock situation?
