Read by a dear friend at my brothers funeral some years ago. That day is a blur to me but this is very close to how I hear the words when I read it myself, thank you

This poem needs to be read with more passion than even what the author did in his version. This performance communicates the fever that people feel towards a life on or around the sea and the comforting end with a friend and peaceful sleep.

I've listened to many versions of this favourite poem of mine, and you have come to the closest of how I hear it in my heart. Everyone seems to put the stress on "must", but I think it sounds better on the " go" . Just my opinion - but beautifully done anyway.

This helped my son a lot to practise his poem. I appreciate your channel.

I feel pretty sure that the last line says "when the long trek's over but on the net it says "long trick" which doesn't make sense. A trek is a journey a trick....well....trick doesn't fit. Iain says it correctly which I appreciate.

The word “trick” in sailing terms refers to a watch at sea: four hours watching and eight hours resting. We may take it at face value and assume Masefield is again drawing attention to the simplicity of a life at sea, emphasised by the wonderful balance between work and rest.

The best recording I've found so far. Well done. Others do the sound effects, but they aren't as important as the words, which you genuinely seem to mean, as opposed to just reciting. Masefield's own recording is dreadful.

Completely agree. It's the best version by far. If I'd any criticism it would be about presentation. If he'd stood on a headland looking out to sea it would've given it even more 'omph' I think.

Is this by memory?

Yes. We have an ensemble of actors who specialise in performing from memory at theatres, festivals and other events. They know a lot of poems!
