In this video, I venture to Chemical Beach in Seaham to capture the famous Wheels. Aptly named "Seaham Wheels"
🟨 NiSi Day - Spurn Point - With Gary Gough
🟨 tinyurl.com/ybk787hx
I have visited Chemical beach on 3 previous occasions. All of my earlier visits accounted for nothing but failure. The first 2 times I visited, the low tide wasn't low enough to reveal the wheels. The third time I slipped on the boulders you have to clamber over to reach the beach. It wasn't just a slip, it was a faceplant, ouch! I used my camera in hand to break my fall which didn't bode well for my camera as I'm sure you've already guessed!
Anyway's, all that aside, I returned. The tide height was perfect and the low tide coincided nicely with the sunrise. Surely I'm going to capture a half-decent image this time around?
Pre-plan your visit!
Don't be a clown like me, plan your trip carefully. The wheels only reveal themselves when the tide is very low (1.1mtr).
Parking location: goo.gl/maps/q4gQRSLVGyce5PjaA
There is a free car park right above Chemical Beach. Park up, step over the small barrier and head to the beach. There is a small path that drops down to the left as you look out to sea. There are a few rocks and boulders you'll have to clamber over to reach the beach. The wheels are located just 50 yards past the large pinnacle. If the tide is low enough you will easily see the wheels.
Feel free to leave a comment.

I stayed overnight in Seaham in a motor home last summer, we were en-route to Bedlington to take my dog back to his ancestral roots as we passed through on our trip of the perimeter of England. Didn’t know about the wheels though, would have liked to have seen them but it wasn’t any particularly special tide. Great shots of a disappearing treat I imagine..............

The last photo (square) with the warm sky, the cool sea and the three objects (wheels, rock and tanker) almost in transit, is a cracker. Kudos Gary.

I think you're playing down the rocks, Gary. They are more like boulders and being the manly man that I am I chickened out of climbing down them. Great video and I'm glad you have got the shot.

As usual, they are beautiful photos Gary. Near where I live there are 2 or 3 sets of old wheels like this in the surf and on the rock shelf. I have taken a few photos of them. I don't know the story behind them.

Lovely shots Gary, only live 3 miles from there and I've been down 4 times, you are right, planing is essential not least of which is to avoid drowning when the tide comes in and blocks your exit! The old industrial remains are superb though, and catching the wheels with the lighthouse in the background is worth it too if you ever come back.

Well done for persevering. It definitely payed off. I think the second image you showed was the best. I photographed the wheels a few years ago in the summer so the sun was more to the North and I could include the pier. Rather than climb down those horrible rocks in the dark, I went down the ramp onto Blast Beach, the next one along, then walked through the rock arch to reach Chemical Beach. I thought that at that ridiculously early hour I would have the place to myself but no, two locals had beaten me to it and nabbed the best position! Still, I did what I came to do and had a nice chat with the others. Another place to try if you're in the area is Steetley Pier, Hartlepool - great for sunrise photos too. And don't forget Seaham Harbour in a storm. The waves there are spectacular. Cheers

Awesome work Gary, 'the wheels' are local to me (about 6miles away), so my pain isn't as harsh as yours when Ive travelled down and not been able to get a shot due to tide levels, haha. Again, brilliant shots Gary.....and p.s. Well done on clambering down the boulders to actually get onto the beach, its daunting to say the least, but as you said "well worth the effort !"
