I did it. 0.704 in a sealed box with a single 15 inch. Volume? approx. 15 ft^3. Weight? 200+ lbs. Dimensions? 3.1 x 2.6 x 2.1 ft (maximum allowed space in my room that I cannot use anyway bc its a corner with desks on either side) Why? because it's fun building things, also I had to build something with a high efficiency because I am limited with power with my amp (not a fan of ported subs)

I have actually done back to back comparisons of sealed vs ported enclosures in my car using the same subs and amp. While the output of the ported box is much stronger, I am willing to give it up for the accuracy of the sealed box. Thanks for the history and explanation, it was surprising how recent the concept was.

Sealed enclosures also typically have less maximum pressure on the walls of the box than ported enclosures! This means less colouration from cabinet vibration and/or less bracing needed. Also, unlike ported, you can line/stuff pretty much to your heart's content (or for the most part at least), this means less cabinet colouration and less cabinet reflections back into the cone causing some extra modes to develop in the cone, something you can't do too much to a ported enclosure due to efficiency losses. Gotta admit I love everything about sealed, 1 downside, less -3dB extension than a ported. Thanks for the vid Justin! Great explanations!
@DIYAudioGuy

I did not know most of that.
@Elliott-Designs
@Elliott-Designs 2 жыл бұрын
@@DIYAudioGuy yep, that's because in a correctly designed ported box, the air in the box at tuning is in phase with that from the cone. This means that at tuning you get double the pressure you do than with a sealed box. However below tuning the port just acts like a giant hole in the box which means really low pressure and is the reason for the steep roll off below tuning, also why the woofer loses control without a subsonic filter as there is very little pressure controlling the cone's movement below tuning.
@Elliott-Designs
@Elliott-Designs 2 жыл бұрын
Also, apart from suitable driver selection, I'm surprised more sealed subs aren't used in cars. That shallow roll off and cabin gain would result in a really favourable situation I'd have thought, and not to mention cone control down to 0Hz, so theoretically you don't need to care about subsonic filtering sometimes.

One thing I think is funny is that ppl will say "progressive suspension sounds terrible, you need a linear suspension for a sub to sound good." And then say they love the way a small sealed box sounds. A sealed box acts like a progressive suspension. As the woofer moves in and takes up more airspace, the airspring tightens.

as long as you use reasonable quality subwoofer drivers, and you leave a bit of air in the box after the driver is mounted. its all that is needed to get great sound. eq is a necessity for all subwoofers so woofer air displacement is the limits how low and loud it can play. small as possible box internal volume within reason is the easy way. no going in larger. watts is not a big deal. i made very small(18L) subwoofer with 10" woofer. 100watts amp and dsp to get it to 15hz. best bass i had.

I ran a triple MTX 10" sub box and the air space was only like .6 cuft net. Sounded great. Of course those aub could run in as little as .52 cuft. If a ported speaker that is designed with a flat response. and a similar speaker but designed with a sealed enclosure with the same low frequency response at 3db down (obviously with a larger enclosure). Is the sealed speaker going to sound more accurate as compared to the ported speaker described? Or is the ported speakers that are described as boomy simply just built incorrectly to sound that way?

@@Vegas_Baba808 Sound quality can be subjective but I've found as long as you don't overdrive your subs, both sealed and ported can sound equally awesome. I'm satisfied with a single UM10" (Originally Sealed but now uses Passive Radiators) in my car. And two UM12s (Ported) in my house. The single 10" in my car is louder than my dual 12s so where the sub goes plays a huge part as well for both the output and frequency response. And I couldn't tell a difference between sealed or ported when I had the Ultimax 10" sealed and compared it to a ported 18. (Full Marty using a Ultimax 18) As for what would provide better performance, It heavily depends on what kind of output and low end you're trying to get out of the subs + how big you're able to build the box. If you're limited on space sealed might be your only option for a good balanced sound that can still play decently low. But there's also Passive Radiators that can let you get away with a smaller than a ported box and still have similar output. And still sound just as good as sealed. (Smaller than a normal ported box because you don't have to worry about port chuffing if you undersize the port)

@@JoshM7 Agree about not over driving subs. The sealed box I have ends up sounding mechanical when bumping at 80% to Full Tilt Boogie (Trademark - Kip Litsey) for certain tracks (but it is not distorted due to clipping as the gain structure is set correctly across all Amps and the DSP) = it just does not sound natural or balanced when being played at very loud volumes. I was thinking a ported box with more cu ft volume would eliminate the mechanical sounding component. The problem may actually lay with the recording quality of the tracks that exhibit this mechanical sound, in addition to harmonic resonance of the subs unloading on the floor and rear cab wall. My truck is like an amphitheater, due to the massive sound dampening and insulation (100 Mil Kilmat and 150 Mil Noico Red) that was done front to back, top to bottom. The Epicenter effects is also all the way off, so that is not a contributing factor for these problem tracks...

That's going to be a tough one! Audiopipe makes some fantastic budget-minded gear. It's hard to get a better bang for the buck. But their power ratings are not accurate. Looks like the official RMS rating on that subwoofer is 1,100 watts. Looks like you have the dual 2 ohm version, so you want to wire the coils in parallel to get a one ohm load. So make sure that you pick an amp that is one ohm stable. This amp here might be a good candidate. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a9aleKiFmqjUmp8.html Yes, call me your subwoofer can probably handle a little bit more power, but it has a clip light on the bass knob. Only bass extension. I'm getting the itch to do Infinite Baffle in my car. I was going to put it off for a good long while. But I keep thinking about it these days. Either I'll use the UM18 I have laying around or try out a Fi IB18, or the big boi Stereo Integrity IB24. Leaning towards the IB24 because It can be built with Dual 2 ohm coils so I don't need to replace my amp. It only does 600-800w at 1 ohm and I'm pretty sure 100-200w will be more than enough power for 95% of the time. I hardly push 200w to my current box and the IB24 at 200w will be louder than the UM10 if it was using 500w. I need to stop thinking about it......

I, on the other hand, wouldn't return to ported/PR where power is not a concern. I'm running UM10 in a sealed enclosure in combination with 500W amp - EQed to give me a flat response from 25Hz and that thing is way different than all the ported subs I used before. You don't even realize there's a subwoofer, that effortless lowend just comes naturally... But I know in some environments you won't hear much of a difference - had that too with sub in one corner, me in another one and no fancy AccuEQ advance like I have now in between. Any sub I tried, everything just resonated at 38Hz.
@JoshM7
@JoshM7 2 жыл бұрын
@@tomkocur That's about the frequency my UM10 was good to when Sealed. I have 600w or so of power for it in my car. But Sealed it was lacking the really low stuff under that that I personally like. It takes up more space but ported/PR on it really does well. I use three RSS265-PR for my UM10 to tune to 19Hz. I get usable output to 16Hz in my car. And I mean windy usable output.

Do you have plans for a 6x9 box for good bass?
@JoshM7
@JoshM7 2 жыл бұрын
6x9 as in coax speakers? Most of them are made for open baffle and can have exceptional smooth bass if they are in the rear deck of a car. (Assuming you are talking about for a car) But they might lack the excursion to have tons of output under 50-60Hz. Better to just get a sub. A sealed sub using the right sub can shock you with how low it can play. My Sealed Ultimax 10" had really good output from 26Hz+ and could audibly play to 15Hz (no harmonic distortion which surprised me) while shaking my cars doors with the pressure.
@DIYAudioGuy
@DIYAudioGuy 2 жыл бұрын
I do not. There aren't a lot of six by nine inch subwoofers out there on the market, tons of coaxial 6x9s.

A Infinite Baffle video would be cool. I may do one in the near future if I keep getting tempted by the idea of saving trunk space and keeping my already good bass response under 20Hz. my 10" plays to 16Hz with authority but it does use up a bit over half the trunk space. I expect the Infinite Baffle sub to have almost no bass above 55Hz due to my trunk acts like a lowpass/brick wall at 55Hz. But I could add a smaller ported box for 55Hz-100Hz that sits just about snug up to the back of my seats in the trunk.

I bought 4 AR3A in 1974. Great speakers, sounded fabulous but were very inefficient and were incapable of absorbing much amplifier power. I had these speakers in a large open party room, driving them with a Dynaco Stereo 400 amplifier. I fused the speakers as specified by AR and I blew many fuses while using them for parties with lots of people. I eventually removed them from service and replaced them with 4 ported JBL speakers with more power handling capacity. The ARs were true sounding speakers with tight bass but were not suited for parties. With the JBLs you could feel the bass in your chest.

I guess it depends on how you personally want the sub to perform for you. Do you want subwoofer bass or just want old fashioned bass..?? Subwoofers can do either or to your choosing by setting the hertz frequency response. 30 hertz, 25 hertz or 20 hertz. etc. Subwoofer is actually a large speaker woofer if you want to use it that way at 20 hertz setting. It leaves out the sub frequencies and only hits the bass note hard, powerful and very tight. Great for listening to classical orchestra music and old fashion rock & roll.

I did the derivation for the equation for a sealed sub box, was a pain in the ass, and is only accurate to WinISD 80% of the time. Seems to freak out with some high Qts/high Vas drivers, but not others. I'm pretty happy with the equation though, so I may even just buy a few subs, make a few boxes, and see how accurate it is in reality.

I think discussing box Q is just as important as the speaker QTS, with both we can predict response with the box. Also, the `tightness of bass` in a sealed box isn't because of the box, it's because of the total Q of the system. Put a woofer with a QTS above 1 in a sealed box, and the results are not going to be good, ever. On the other hand, if you take a woofer with a very low QTS and put it in a small sealed box, you get also a poor response. So, the box combination depends on the woofer design just as much as the woofer design depends on the box design in relation to the design goal.

now hold on , that is not so simple. some drivers work best in a sealed box, others work in reflex box better. it has a lot to do whit the design of the driver. drivers ment for sealed box do indeed manage to get all that deep bass people are looking for. allso, they got a way nicer rolloff. and group delay -winisd can show that too- is usually better. ported designs in a limited passband can outperform in that regard , i have to mention. however, sealed subs lack ports. now why is that important ? port noise. allso the port is actually radiating sound too, that will interfer with the sound from the speaker cone. that creates a lot of unwanted events. its getting harder to find drivers that where designed for sealed boxes, indeed true. but, they still do exsist, and they give a whole new level of clarity. some of them do manage it in a relative small box, compareable to the size of a ported box. EBP = fs / Qes , if its less than 50 then its generally to be used in a sealed box. this parameter alone does not tell the whole story, but its a good guideline. over 100 will not quite work in a sealed box. the driver you show in this video is clearly not ment for a sealed box.
