Hi Jane, you don;t know me, my name is JoAnn, I live in rural Iowa and I am a stay home wife ( I have MS and am confined to my wheel chair } you are my ew Best Friend, I have been trying all kinds of joining as you go video's, without success, but you did such a wonderful job of SHOWING how to do it along with your Pictorials, now to drag them granny squares back out. Thank you JoAnn

So glad you found this useful. I have put off learning this method because I wasn't sure how to use it with my squares, but I decided it was time to figure it out, and it wasn't as hard as I thought. Makes me happy that others are enjoying this too.

This is the best join for granny squares! I've tried all the sewing methods, other crochet togethers, and none of them looked as good as this one does. Thank you so so much for this tutorial! I can now confidently make my niece her baby blanket for hopefully her first birthday but if not then christmas.

I love this join and your way of demonstrating is so clear, you're a natural teacher. I have made daisy granny squares for a baby blanket with solid double crochet edges . My question is could I use this join by working a single crochet into a stitch, chain one, skip next stitch and continue in this way across the row? I have only come to crochet recently as I was a knitter all my life. I love this craft and get so much enjoyment doing it. I hope this isn't a silly question. Thank you again for your tutorials - they are wonderful. Greetings from Ireland.

Thanks so much, glad you like it. Not a silly question at all. I actually have a video tutorial now for solid stitch squares as well here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/os6kqq6HlpzGqqM.html But yes, you have the idea, just skip every second stitch. I too was a knitter for many years, started in crochet back when it was mostly a doily kinda craft, but I have came back to it and am enjoying how relaxing it really is. So glad you found my tutorials and thanks for watching! 😊

Hello Jane I'm glad I found you even I've been crocheting off and on the too many years I still don't know a lot of different stitches I am retired I have more time on my hands so that is one of my promises to myself is to learn different stitches the one question I do have to ask is you were talking about the back I did not know that there were two sided I thought it was both ways either side top or bottom or front or back or were you referring it to the back to make it easier for us to understand just wanting to know like I said I'm still learning and I also I've gotten into any still learning now thank you much and hope you have a blessed life
@jspcreate
@jspcreate 2 ай бұрын
There are different ways of describing it, Right Side or Front Side, then Back Side or Wrong Side. Unless the stitch is reversible, then it doesn't really matter. When I refer to to the Back, it is just the Wrong Side of the work, or the " less pretty " side lol. Such as when making a sweater, there is a Right Side and Wrong SIde to the fabric, as Front and Back could get confused with the Front and Back of the sweater. So when I make a square I almost always work in the round from the Right Side or Front Side. To stay consistent with the look of the blanket, I like to keep the Right Side's of the Square facing on one side and the Wrong SIdes of the square facing the other way. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks for watching.

Hi Jane, I recently found and subscribed to your channel and am really enjoying your videos. I am a lefty who recently, in my old age, taught myself to crochet right handed because I was frustrated by trying to convert patterns. I was wondering if you would be willing to do a book review of your most helpful crochet books. I want to move on now in my crochet journey. By the way, your color choices for your squares are fabulous. I want all those yummy colors!
@jspcreate
@jspcreate 4 ай бұрын
So glad you found me, and congrats on teaching yourself to crochet both ways, that is a feat! I haven't read many crochet books in the last decade or so, I tend to just play and experiment, I treat crochet a little like sculpting and a little like tetris lol. The books I mostly learned from are probably out of print, but I if you are looking I would suggest @EdieEckman has some great books on techniques. I spent alot of time in my town's library back in the day and looked up old crochet books, they really have the best info. Classic, but tried and true. I also had a few crochet stitch dictionaries and would just work my way through the stitches, one at a time, and learned so many new things just from doing that. And KZfaq is awesome because we can actually see the stitches worked, just like being in a class setting. I would say, lots of play and experimenting. I would say you are well on your way by teaching yourself the opposite handed method. You have a perspective on the stitches that not many others have because you can do both methods. Let me know if there is something specific you want to learn and I can try to create a tutorial to help. Thanks for watching and have fun!

Thanks so much, so glad you like it. You can use it on a solid border as well. I have a tutorial that should be up shortly on how I do this with solid sc border squares. Even picture with red arrows on the ones you're supposed to go into to join and is it at an angle like a zigzag you don't go into the one directly across cuz you did that one previously you go into the one next to it
@jspcreate
@jspcreate 4 ай бұрын
I did try adding red arrows or highlighting circles, but then just took them out as it really only made it way more confusing visually. Following the steps is a better method. I would suggest placing a stitch marker in the single crochet that is worked into the join when you work across the bottom edge each time, this is a KEY stitch to help navigate as everything in the corners are worked in relation to it. Many times as I was figuring this out, I worked into the wrong stitches trying to figure out how to get around the corner without a hole, until I just decided to work everything in relation to that single crochet and then I could navigate the corner better. Also as you work the edges, you technically are working into the corresponding ch spaces as you work back and forth across the squares, but it does zigzag. Then at the corner join, you are working around the corner to eliminate the hole. I am working on a symbol chart to explain this join but for now I hope this helps.
@marylong4333
@marylong4333 4 ай бұрын
Can you do a close up of the chain one stitch that you're supposed to go into on a granny square cuz I'm not sure about that you don't go into every stitch across you only go in certain ones?
@jspcreate
@jspcreate 4 ай бұрын
When you are working across the long edge, you work into the ch 1 sp of each square, each ch 2 corner and the ch sp created by the join. Is that what you were asking? Then when you are joining the squares, you work into the ch 1 spaces and at the corners you are working around the corner so every space is worked at least once. It might be easier if you place stitch markers as you go at the corner to indicated where you have already worked.

Hi Jane, thanks for the great tutorial 🙏 I have a question… I have replayed the grey square over and over, but can’t quite see which space you put the 2nd SC into? So you join SC 1ch from previous row into the corner space of the grey square, do you go into the 1st space next to that Sc1ch or the 2nd space? Im finding that my rows aren’t always lining up 😅 I’m clearly doing something wrong. Thanks x

This is definitely the trickiest part of this whole process. After i did this video i realized stitch markers would make the process so much easier. So I did another video for solid square JAYGO method which works pretty much the same and in this video I showed how to place stitch markers along the long edge so you could find the spaces better when you get back to them. Take a look and see if this helps. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/os6kqq6HlpzGqqM.html

Hello, I was just wondering if this way of joining squares after washing it and washing it will it hold up I making one as a gift and my squares are 15“ x 15“ corner to corner square. This is my first blanket and nervous about it falling apart. Lol.😂😂

I find this method to be perhaps more secure than joining squares in strips because you are not cutting your yarn. Just like crocheting a border on, except it runs up and down every single square. I use a separate full ball to do the joining so it is continuous. So far mine are staying together through washings. Hope that helps. Enjoy!

Yes, just work into the corner stitch the same way I do as if it was a chain space.

Question: At 19:37 I'm confused as to why there are not 2 chains total at that corner?
@jspcreate
@jspcreate Ай бұрын
After the first sc in the corner, I did a chain 1, then a sc into the back square, then ch 1, and then a sc into the corner again. This gives the equivalent of a ch 2 ( or more ) because you have the sc and ch stitch from the back corner in the mix. If I did ch 2 I end up with it being too loose and/or too bulky. I have found at these 4 corner spots you want to pull them in, but not too tight, and not too loose. However if you find the ch 1 isn't working for you and you need a ch 2 definitely do that. Everyone crochets at a different tension and somedays I use ch 1 all the way around and some days I use ch 2's Hope that helps, thanks for watching 😊

Ive tried and tried. heres the problem the yarn is on the left side of my crochet hook when i try to do the back attaching single crochet in the next stitch? It just ends up being a slip stitch because you cant wrap yarn around and then pull through because yarn is on left side of hook after you do the front square stitch? I see you in video, but its not happening when i attempt it? And i still cant figure out which spot youre supposed to be doing all the single crochets across? Wish you would take a picture with dots in each place or something? do we need to do some special border all the way around each granny square to create where youre supposed to put the single crochet add one? Or do you have to have granny squares like you have with the circle center?
@jspcreate
@jspcreate 4 ай бұрын
I'm sorry you are having a hard time with this, It is hard to say what is happening for you without seeing you do it. Be sure you do a chain stitch inbetween each single crochet, which should set you up for the next single crochet. It should work the same whether you are working into the back square or front square, just work as if it is the next stitch in your row. you are always working into the chain spaces in this tutorial as the Zippy Square has a chain stitch border. It will work a little different with a straight stitch border. If you have a straight stitch border, I go up a hook size and then work into every second stitch. I will be working another tutorial on this version soon.

My squares that I want to join don’t have a ch1 on the border, it’s just a row of dc. Can I still use this method to join but maybe skip every other stitch since I don’t have ch1 spaces? This will be my first attempt at joining!

What size crochet hook do you use for your join
@jspcreate

I use a 5.5mm. I often go up a half size to get a softer flow to the join, unless you are already a loose crocheter than just use the same size of hook you made the squares with.

My blanket is 5squares by 6 squares how do I do the five squares before going to the next row
@jspcreate
@jspcreate 2 ай бұрын
You will repeat Square 3 on the Top Row as many times as you need, so 2 more times for you if you want 5 squares, then after you work back across the bottom to start the next row and have it set up, continue to repeat Square 6, again twice more for your 5 squares across. Then work as you did for the Second Row until you have the 6 rows you want. The chapter markers on the video indicate where Square 3 and Square 6 instructions start. Hope that helps, Enjoy

Can you use this type of join for any kind of granny square? I’m currently making a skeleton granny square throw and was wondering if this would work on it?
@jspcreate
@jspcreate 4 ай бұрын
You can use any square ( mostly ) , the join in this tutorial is done on a square that has sc, ch 1 edge for it's last round. I have a tutorial that I linked in the description below ( Warm Hugs and Daisy Squares Part 1 ) on how to change up a straight sc edging or add an additional round to get a sc, ch 1 or ch 2 edging. It will make your square one round larger, but it works into this join so much easier and seamlessly.

Ok I have another question I watched the tutorial on how to change a straight sc to a sc chain one. In the corners of my skeleton granny square it’s a chain 2 not a chain 3. So how many would I chain in the corners, would I still do chain 2 or a chain 1?
@jspcreate
@jspcreate 4 ай бұрын
I would keep it at a ch 2, you still want space for the work to turn the corner without rounding it too much. Good luck with it.

When you say ‘edge stitch’ di you mean SC?
@jspcreate
@jspcreate 2 ай бұрын
I think I mean when I'm working an outer edge of a square I do the single crochet ch 1 or ch 2 as opposed to the " joining stitch " which is when I work the two squares together. When I get around to writing the pattern for the blanket I will have the "edge stitch" in the special stitches section simply as the ch 1, single crochet. Hope that helps.

What about blocking squares beforehand?
@jspcreate
@jspcreate 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for this question. I found these squares were small enough they held their shape well, but if I needed to I would do small batch and then block them as I go too in batches. This one I blocked at the end so the seams got blocked as well. Larger squares I would block in small batches as I worked. Thanks for watching.
