Seamless Repeat Pattern Fill Swatch in Adobe Illustrator 2023

Learn the original method for making repeat pattern fill swatches in Illustrator, without using Pattern Editing Mode. We'll create the repeat on a 3x3 inch artboard, add motifs and a background color shape. Then I'll show you the secret to making it work seamlessly: placing a perfectly aligned, no fill, no stroke rectangle at the bottom of the stacking order before dragging it into the Swatches panel.
We'll even look at how to troubleshoot the art in the layers panel, in case the pattern swatch fails.

Hi!! Great video, thank you for making it. I have a question, how do I crop and save the pattern for use elsewhere like paper or fabric? Would I just make a 3x3 clipping mask and save it as an image file? Thanks!

Will it also be a seamless repeating if you make it different then a grid. For example: you want to make it a half brick in editting pattern mode?

Yes, but when you design inside pattern editing mod using a half-drop/brick, it gets translated into a grid repeat when it makes the pattern fill swatch. So take that into account if you use the art dragged from the swatches panel (expanded pattern fill).

Hi Laura, I'm trying to duplicate the gem but when i do command control C and conmand control F. I don't get a duplicate of the gem I only have one gem and can move only one gem with the arrow key. I'm not able to duplicate the gem. Could you please tell me what I'm doing wrong? thanks:) Lou Lou

It's command or control, not both - command is for Mac, and control is for PC. Hope that fixes it!

Do I need to have an art board to start with or can i start with a triangle inside of an art board?

If you are asking if you can make a repeat tile based on a triangle, no. Illustrator pattern fills only repeat on a grid, so that's why I'm using a square (or rectangular) artboard as the format for my pattern tile. But if I'm misunderstanding your question, let me know!
