Great video. Nice to listen to a frank conversation about the Drake equation without starry eyed optimism. Pardon the pun.

The answer to the Fermi Paradox. There is a beautiful loving Universe many people claim they experience when they are undergoing an NDE. Long before any Advanced Civilization gains the technology necessary for Interstellar Travel - they find a way to escape to that Universe. In other words, it is technologically easier to get to that other very pleasant and safer place, than it is to develop the Type II Civilization Technology necessary for Interstellar Travel. This explains why we have found no sign of an Advanced Alien Civilization anywhere in our Universe.

I am working out a Fermi Paradox filter theory I call the Stupidity Singularity. As a population of a place increases the stupidity level increases; ultimately reaching a critical mass making the place unlivable. Usually this is known on the relative micro-scale of the idyllic small town eventually becoming the run-down overpopulated husk collapsing upon its own filth. It is also likely the engine of historical societal collapse such as the fall of empires. Imagine this on a macro scale for planets and civilizations. Not only would this explain most alien civilizations preventing themselves from expansion to the point of being noticed by others, it would also explain more advanced civilizations steering clear of Earth after getting to know us at a distance. Earth could well be the Detroit or New Jersey of the known universe.

Two candidates for the Great Filter with intelligent life: Donald Trump and climate disaster, both causing civilisation to unravel before we go interstellar.
