Living in the UK. . We have the great pleasure of growing up with Sean lock micky flanagan and the other legends. . Absolutely gutted to hear about Sean the other day . He will live on in heaven making em laugh there .

I love whelks. They're petty hard to find. And yes they're chewy. In the 1970's it was regular to have a bloke visit the local pubs with a basket full of cockles, mussels, prawns, periwinkles, whelks and crab meat. I don't think they do it these days. I miss those days.

I used to live on the South Coast in England and in the summer (whatever day that was booked for during the year!) we'd go to the sea front to buy fresh whelks and they were huge, covered in vinegar and chew them all day! I loved them, but MANY wouldn't! - Think your equivalent maybe 'Conch'

A Welch is a small sea snail , it is eaten with vinegar, and when in it's shell is eaten with a pin. When you get them out they look like snot ( boogers)

Whelks are (boiled) sea snails that you serve cold with malt vinegar and buttered brown bread. They’re a very, very traditional British food that you’d get at the seaside but have probably gone out of fashion in recent decades. (Or maybe hipsters are eating them again. They used to be a cheap source of protein, so would fall into the foodie view of ‘peasant foods’). We used to call them “gritty bogeys (boogers)” as kids because that’s what they’re like.

They are basically a sea snail. They are quite delicious if you only have a couple. Just like caviar. It's nice on a small cracker/biscuit. But, you wouldn't want to eat a full can that's been under hot studio lights for at least 1 hour...

Whelks are not snails but shellfish so yeah, similar to clams, etc but about half the size.

Yeah you haven’t had very good shellfish if it’s all just chewy lol. It goes all rubbery when it’s overcooked or cooked from frozen you have to get it fresh
