There was an occasion some years ago when a police officer in England was shot, and as he lay on the ground with a bullet in him, he swore at the gunman as he ran away. That cop received a complaint from a member of the public for swearing. True!

I read it in an article in an Australian magazine which had funny and odd anecdotes about police. I'm sorry that 8 years after posting the comment, I can't remember any more details about my source at the time.

Swearing is only offensive because we are brought up to believe that these words are bad, even though we are never given any proper reasoning for that.

That _is_ the reason, kind of. Having words that "you're not supposed to use in normal conversation" allows you to use them when you need to make it clear that the conversation you're having is not normal. And if those words become too common, others take soon their place.

Swearing HAS to be offensive to some, otherwise swearwords would just be normal words and wouldn't have the effect they do. Using proper swear words increases pain tolerance and gives you a power boost.

The point of current "swear" words is that they are words with literal meanings that are to do with subjects which are generally considered private - bodily excretions, "private" parts, and sex. Bringing the private into the public domain is what is - or was - shocking. Swearing in the UK has increased over the past few decades (at least in part because of its acceptance in broadcast and print media) and for many people the association of words used when swearing with their literal (and still, at least for some, private and "taboo") meanings is lost.

I come from a religious family, and I can tell you a legitimate time you can swear. I was eating with my family and found a Band-Aid in my food; I freaked out and started swearing, but no one said anything and I never got in trouble for it. Still makes me chuckle to picture the shock on their faces.

There is no logical reasoning that swearing is bad. Why is poo acceptable, but shit isn't? It has an identical meaning and the sound of a word doesn't hurt.
