In the UK whelks are sort of a part of our culture, though not to everyone in the UK I imagine. If you live in a seaside town (which is almost everywhere seeing as we're an island) you get whelk stalls near the seaside and some people go and collect their own whelks. I'm from Dundee on the east coast of Scotland and some of my fondest early memories were where my dad would take us to the beach and while my sister and I played in rock pools and built sandcastles our parents would fill a bucket with whelks that they would later boil and eat. My older sister and parents loved them but to me they were horrible-tasting things that looked like something that just fell out of the nose of a flu sufferer. My favourite bit was that not every whelk shell contained a whelk because shells discarded by whelks when they shed/molted would become home to tiny crabs. So I would inspect the bounty picked up by our parents and insist that any shell with a non-whelk entity in it was put back in a rock pool. I gave zero fucks about the whelks that were going to be eaten. Bit of a black and white childhood I suppose, free the crab, munch on the snail. :D

Bill seems very good at playing along when other people do a bit. I've seen clips of him and Dylan Moran together outside of black books, and you can see the sort of chemistry that led to the show.
