She hated his answer. Her entire body and facial features changed when he stated his opinion. She went from smiling and relaxed to ridged and almost confrontational. Like she was waiting for a fight.

Probably because she's been programmed like a robot for her TV position and has a harder time processing a middle ground viewpoint on the topic, like so many are unable to.

Jon Richard, I honestly have zero problem with women uniting over growing public awareness of how common (and just how awful) sexual harassment is in the workplace. Those feelings of vindication and righteousness are well deserved, I'm sure you have some women close to you that could tell you stories. What kills me is how some men have not only lost their jobs on the flimsiest of evidence, but have actually been wiped clean from the history of entertainment products they helped create. So Stalin-esque it's astonishing. And these guys (and I'm NOT talking about Harvey Weinstein [although we've NEVER heard his side of things]), once they were fired had no public platform to plead their case, and were often legally bound to silence. The utter lack of concern for due process EXPRESSED PUBLICLY by so many well-educated women is truly alarming and depressing.

"In most things that are really important , I think it's best to just slow down..." Whatever he said next was edited out because the media don't want to slow down. The media thrives off hysteria and sensationalism. It took balls for Sean Penn to say what he said. It's crazy that the mere suggestion that the me too movement could benefit from employing a measured, nuance approach, which is open to discussion without fear of persecution, is such a risky thing to even utter. Apparently, the interviewer couldn't even fathom what Penn suggested as it went whizzing over her head!

The simple fact that Sean was so nervous and had to muster his courage merely to address the issue in a calm and sensible manner perfectly illustrates how dangerously far the pendulum of the MeToo movement is threatening to swing. Its purpose is supposed to be to give victimized women a voice, NOT to victimize men and take their voices away. That's not the equality that people claim to want. Two wrongs do not make a right. Well done to Sean for having the guts to speak out; and well done to Natascha McElhone for trying to be supportive of her male co-star's right to free speech instead of going silent or deflecting when the topic arose.

I'm a woman and I also agree with Sean Penn's feeling toward the Me Too Movement. I'm always suspicious when something goes from a few isolated incidents to a "movement" or "trend". When it crosses into that territory, almost always do we start seeing women coming out of the woodwork accusing a random person of something that may or may not have happened 20, 30 or even 40 years ago. In reality that woman is after her pat on the back, her 15 minutes of fame and maybe a hefty payout. This movement has become more of a take down of men by male-hating feminists. It's the "let's get 'em girls!" lynch mob mentality.
@cealabeala4367
@cealabeala4367 5 жыл бұрын
Simply Magical “a few isolated incidents”? That’s hardly an accurate description. Harvey Weinstein alone has preyed on hundreds of women over the years. Do you have any female friends/family members? Ask them how many times something creepy has happened to them. It’s happened to almost every woman at least once, and for most it’s happened multiple times.
@crescentfreshbret
@crescentfreshbret 5 жыл бұрын
Dude, there’s nothing “trendy” about it. What’s happening is, the more women speak out about the abuse and harassment they’ve experienced, the more other women (and men) feel empowered to speak out about their own experiences. So many people were abused years ago and were terrified to tell anyone about it. Some of them DID come forward with experiences and got nothing but scolding , blame, or indifference, then experienced abuse again and were afraid to come forward again because of how it was received before. Those people have been given a courage they never had before and have had their claims gain a new legitimacy now that a light has been shown on the prevalence of this sort of thing. I’ve been hearing stories from all kinds of people who were abused 30-40 years ago and haven’t been able to tell anyone about it (not even their spouses) until just recently. So many people (especially when the abuse was perpetrated by people of prominence or authority in a church) were taught to just keep their experiences quiet, push it down, and pretend like it never happened, and this has caused all kinds of psychological damage to people that has manifested itself in various aspects of their lives. The “Me Too” Movement has brought about healing experiences (many of them long overdue) for so many people. I’d say it’s done and will do far more good than bad and is something that has been needed for a LONG time now.

Sexual harassment isn't an anomaly, a matter of a few "isolated incidents". It is pervasive. It's probably happened to you and you just didn't recognize it as that because you've been told your whole life that it's normal and you should ignore it and "laugh it off", that the burden is on you, not the men. Women hold each other down a lot, so it doesn't surprise me. Lots of women "totally agreed with the men" on suffrage, as well. Some of the worst misogynists are women.

When a notably intelligent, articulate human being is sitting in front of you expressing a truth that you are in no way prepared to process, and you stiffen at his words because he's not spouting the same old rhetoric that you're accustomed to nodding and smiling back at, YOU ARE OUT OF YOUR LEAGUE!! Why do you think Mr. Penn doesn't do many interviews?! Could it be because when he speaks honestly and thoughtfully on a topic, and his views are not in line with the mainstream drivel-of-the-day, that interviewers like you are unable to disguise their disgust and disapproval? Ideally yes, but let's be honest (and I'm a guy), the male perspective had thoroughly dominated TV and film until the last ten years or so. Loads more roles for middle aged male actors than similarly aged women, and we're talking meaningful, nuanced roles where the character's choices influence the plot. If we suddenly see more women in such roles, it's just a corrective, don't get too worked up about it, the male dominance was a false picture of reality anyway.
@Jedi391
@Jedi391 5 жыл бұрын
h d More roles of significance that are played by women isn’t the issue. It’s the slanting of a story to be “pro” women that is the problem. For example there are many movies with strong/dominant female leads such as The Aliens series, The Hunger Games, Wonder Woman, Sara Connor in the Terminator series.....just to name a few. These are all significant and substantial roles that have been universally accepted and appreciated. These stories were not pro-Woman, they were simply populated with quality characters that were loved based on their own merits. The characters quality didn’t require that the movie/show be slanted to be pro woman and they were all majorly successful. An example of a movie slanted to be “pro-woman” is Star Wars the Last Jedi. In that movie each male character was artificially shown as a complete buffoon who couldn’t get anything right ever. They were all complete morons or very much the embodiment of evil. On the other hand the female rolls couldn’t get anything wrong and had abilities and powers that are ridiculously powerful even by Star Wars standards. Thus you had fan backlash for that reason, along with other serious problems of course. That’s what happens when you try to force something artificially to preach to the audience.
@hd-xc2lz
@hd-xc2lz 5 жыл бұрын
Jedi391, your citing the Star Wars franchise to make your point is awfully nutty. For every excessively pro woman film both you and I together can name several hundreds of films where male characters make every decision, where only men experience internal growth, and women are mere window dressing, shallow obstacles to male success or cheerleaders, and all appearing strictly between the ages of 18-25. You know exactly what I'm talking about.

Couldn't agree more. Not to say that sexual assault isn't a problem because it is and we need to work on ridding the taboo of being ashamed for being assaulted. Tim Buckanouske In mental health counseling and psychology it is highly advisable for people to tell their experiences. Silencing people isn’t an option and as women are empowered now more than ever, they are voicing their opinions and their right to have a voice (Constitution; 1st Amendment; Civil Rights) The MeToo Movement is a collective collaboration of women and men who have been in abusive situations- I’m sure if Mr. Penn sat down and spoke with some of these men and women he would be able to get the specifics of black and white. The movement has been happening for ever, women have suffered in inequality and sexual harassment since the beginnings of time, it just so happens that now there are platforms social media, the news media- all of whom are giving women and men louder voices. It amazes me that Mr. Penn doesn’t bring about his charge of a felony domestic assault on his then partner Madonna circa 1980’s as well as with other female partners. I’m not sure how anyone could agree with Sean Penn over women’s rights, human rights whatsoever- the areas are grey because he’s been accused with evidence and there’s no excuse for abuse on any human rights level. MeToo is a discussion and sounding board in this country and the world about the way people are being treated based off of equality and civil rights. Perhaps the question should be, how can we improve and raise generations to think of people as people.

I dislike Penn and think he's overrated as an actor. However, he is bang on with his comments about this so-called movement. A woman's value shouldn't be proportional to how much we devalue a man--any man. It's quite insidious, really, and politically motivated. Interesting, too, that the push is coming from Penn's side of the political spectrum. For once, he's actually taking to task his own. Utterly refreshing.

I just rolled my eyes when she came out with that vapid question, as if it's a matter of how small or big something is, as if the intrinsic quality of its nature changes depending on its size! I mean the guy started talking about the need for a less partisan conversation, for a more nuanced approach to the debate, and she gets all tight lipped and slyly infers he has a problem with the power (size) of the movement, not so subtlely implying of course that he is simply another man in a position of power that feels 'threatened' by metoo. Then she turns to the actress and tries to put responsibility on her to say something counteractive by saying so you have conversations about this? In other words: you're a woman, you don't agree with this do you?! It's so boringly predictably asinine.

good job Sean! So many times a Metoo accusation is treated in the media like a religious revelation, and to question the accuser is some form of blasphemy. Newsflash, PEOPLE LIE, for many reasons.n Finally, Metoo doesn't seem to be able to draw a distinction between an unwanted compliment, an awkward dating moment, normal flirting, or an actual sexual assault, and to conflate those things only diminishes the seriousness of actual sexual assault. This movement is ridiculous...let’s make the world even more scared to do anything. I can say for the women who have actually been sexually assaulted , yes it needs attention, but now women are crying sexual assault if you put a hand on them innocently! And cops are annoyed they got to waste time on these fake assault claims. When the real cases need attention! Pretty soon it will be the old cry wolf scenario. Men being scared to go on a date without being accused of anything. Scary world we are creating.

Thanks Sean for helping find balance in the MeeToo thing. I know there are many cases where people are using it for financial, emotional and vindictive attacks. I've seen it up close and personal, once you make a claim public, all forms of balanced legal and factual sorting out is pretty much destroyed because emotions run high.

A lot of people attacking the reporter are doing exactly what Penn is warning not to do. Black and white. HeroEnemy. And it's perpetuated by people's interpretations of others. I agree with Penn 100% but we have to really key in to what he said. It's about more than just the me too movement. When he mentioned "being glommed on to, with great stridency and rage." I find that those words apply to more than just just me too. I'm not attacking anyone or saying this is how anyone has to think..it's just how I see it.

it's some 4% of people who lie about this. people who lie or are falsely accused do not belong or have any place in this movement. and, it's the media s fault it's become distorted and imbalanced, not really the public. this type of unsolicited behavior has been occurring forever, so it's time those affected had their time end space to shout about it....its called backlash, and should be expected when so much wrong has been silenced....well, forever. the time will come when the pendulum swings the other way a bit end strikes balance, but that is not today or tomorrow, and should not be. those falsely accused ...most of whom are protecting their ego as the research is there....should go make their own platform instead of bandwagonning on this one, because you divert the true issue and confuse this one...most abuse goes without any punishment, abused deserve their time and space. so Penn's whole argument is misplaced. wrongly accused individuals is not what metoo is about. he has also been known to be abusive, go figure.

The concern of sexual assault, harassment, abuse is a worldwide concern for women. It is reality. For too long victims who come forward are not believed, disparaged, attacked and their families are also attacked for telling the truth. Perpetrators want to continue to victimize others and do not want to receive consequences for these actions.

Stephanie Jade is a disgusting, man hating pig. A call to men was an absolute farce, and the fact that you are telling people to "see these works" is hilariously misguided. You have some deep rooted issues with men, you may need to see a therapist instead of blaming men for your shortcomings.
