It's a shame that reunion destroyed Black Sabbath, and Rainbow

@@godetonter4764 When one door closes, another opens!!! When Mark II disolved in 1973 that led eventually to the great band Gillan. And when Blackmore called it a day with Purple in 1975, that led to the fantastic Rainbow. And when Dio left Rainbow in 1979 that led to the renaissance of Black Sabbath in the Dio years, as well as a reconfiguration of Rainbow with Roger Glover coming into the fold. And when Dio left Sabbath led to form his own great band, that provided an opportunity for Gillan to sing in Sabbath. In a way it is all somewhat circular. Change, new blood, new ideas, new directions. Sometimes it produces some fine results.

@@garyh.238 With Ian Gillan and the 1984 reunion, there was a reason for him to agree (besides money and it being what the fans wanted): his agent actually threatened to resign and move with his family to Australia if Gillan didn't accept the invite.

@@garyh.238 Gillan himself - not sure where - but Ian knew by looking at his fact that the agent wasn't bluffing: he was going to move his family to the other side of the world unless this reunion happened. Also, while they briefly discussed bringing in David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes, this was dropped as both men were working on other projects (Coverdale had Whitesnake, and Hughes ended up on lead vocals for the next Sabbath album, Seventh Star - they would have declined in any event).

I would agree with Asia. But John Payne's last studio album, 2004's Silent Nation, with Asia is a lot better than the 3 reunion (never heard Gravitas) albums Asia put out. Overall to me. Silent Nation is probably Asia's best album. It's right up there with 1985's Astra (my favourite from Downes, Wetton & Palmer era).

I think the Allman Brothers are the greatest American rock band of all time. I did get to see Lynyrd Skynyrd while they still had some of their original members, with the guy on bass with all the hats, and the original piano player, and I'm happy I saw that. There is a lot of sadness and emotion that comes along with that band, and their music, and the Allmans as well.

KISS '96 for me. When the curtain went down in Berlin on that tour and I saw the original line-up in their full overblown make-up glory for the first time (they unmasked when I was still in elementary school), I totally lost it in the front row. After Deuce, I looked around... grown men were weeping. A popular German TV host next to me was sobbing while shouting in my ear (english translation follows): "That's Ace Frehley right there, man! Ace Frehley, man!!! My hero Ace Frehley, man!!!" Unforgettable. (They should have called it quits soon after, though.) Honourable mentions: Alice In Chains '09, Exodus '04, Simon & Garfunkel '81. All other reunions mostly sucked.

All really good choices. I’d have to say that the Europe one is the reunion most people would be shocked by. Absolutely killer stuff over the past 15 years from these guys. Everyone here in Detroit just associates them with the Pistons Bad Boys teams because that was the team’s theme song. So much more to them now. ‘Secret Society’ shocked the hell out of me and is my favorite out of the newer ones, although they are all very strong.

My favorite reunion only happened for one song. Normally I would never sight this institution, but the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was the stage for a reunion that made be both super happy and ultimately pissed off as well. Heart...and the original band playing "Crazy on You" showed with one song, despite decades of anger and attacks at each other in the media, how essential those original members were to that untouchable sound and feel of those classic Heart albums! They were awesome!!!! They have NEVER been the same since Derosier, Fossen, Leese and Fischer left the band!! Since all of them are still alive, IF they were to regroup, (which I know they won't) I would pay almost any amount of money to see that lineup!!

About Europe. John Norum left the band during the height of their success in the mid/late 80's. He didn't care for all the commerical stuff and "work" around. Taking photos, doing interviews for teenage magazines and such. He wanted to rock and play live. He started a solo career that went decent. He later rejoined the band and has been a stabile member since. I think they do a good job of keeping a balance of the early work and the later stuff live. Even though The Final Countdown was a early favorite song for me as a kid I must agree that you shouldn't judge the band upon that song or Carrie or Rock the Night. They do offer quite much else!

Great choice for day 7, Pete. I too bought this LP for its melodic sense. I have Triumph's Never Surrender for day 7. Rik Emmett pumped a bunch of catchy riffs following up Allied Forces. Never Surrender and When the Lights Go Down were two great concert songs.

My bucket list of bands to see live has Europe at the top. They've become one of my favorite bands since their comeback. Also, I hope we get some new material from them sooner than later.

Glad Martin mentioned MSG!! My favorite group, since i saw them in Dec. 1980. Seen various line ups. Got all the CD's. Glad to see him still playing and better than ever. Still top notch band members.

All the bands you mentioned were good picks. Glad martin mentioned Alice n Chains. Black Gives Way to Blue is my second favorite Alice album! It's also admirable that they got a new member with his own personality and talents. Will isn't just a Layne sound alike to sing his parts, as MArtin mentioned he's a writer, guitar player, and has his own unique singing style. As for me, I'd also include Rob Halford rejoining Judas Priest. Angel of retribution is a great album and I think it was the perfect balance between their classic sound while still embracing modern metal production, and of course, the band has continued on since with great albums like Redeemer of Souls and Firepower. I think Adrian Smith and Bruce Dickinson rejoining Iron Maiden is also an important one. Similar to the Priest in that they came back with a great new album and have build off that momentum ever since. A weird one would be the Beatles Anthology project in 1994. I actually really like the two Lennon songs Free As A Bird and Real Love that George, Paul, and Ringo finished.

The Velvet Underground reunion had every potential of being an abject failure. And then...it was pretty freakin' great. Like, really really great. Getting to see Maureen Tucker do her thing after all those years was a dream come true, and man did she bring it! Everyone did.

ABWH in 1989. With Yes West and Asia plowing along at full speed, I really didn't see it coming. And, although I'm luke-warm on the album, there was something about those songs that felt more in-line with classic yes. I remember the promo video being cool (studio footage) and seeing the guys on MuchMusic (our local MTV) was fun. Hadn't seen Wakeman or Bruford in some time. And then the concert - which was fantastic! My best memory was watching the video for Brother of Mine with a buddy - who had no experience with Yes - and seeing his jaw drop at the site of Wakeman's rapid fire piano build that ends the track.

Indeed, that is a great comeback. I prefer the San Louis Obispo shows and Keys to Ascension in ‘97 - after Talk, we didn’t think we’d ever hear stuff from Tales ever again. Truly a magic time. Jeez, how many reunions has Yes had?? 😂

Great episode as always. What Michael Schenker did with those reunion tours should have been done by Blackmore as well. Would have been better than the Memories In Rock concerts I think.

Absolutely! Rainbow had plenty of members. Bringing out as many as possible (and giving Ronnie Romero a chance too) could gone pretty well. Now that reunion is much forgotten already. I doubt those live-albums with time will sell very well.

one really great reunion that comes to mind for me is the band Satan. Great NWOBHM band who puts out 2 albums in the 80s including the fantastic 'court in the act' but are done by 88. Then they reform in 2011 and start releasing a string of banger albums from 2013 with 'life sentence' 25 years after their previous album.

Another great show guys and thank you for showing the love for past and present SKYNYRD, I just don't get the people who won't listen to any of their albums after 77 as far as I'm concerned their discography stands up against any of their peers who are still around today.

Allmans almost by far the greatest reunion of all time for a classic rock band. Warren and Woody gave such a spark to the band. I saw the Crackdown ON Crack show at MSG in 1986, and then numerous times on the glorious second reunion. Dregs for sure Thanks for the reminder Pete. Saw them in I believe 1988 for the reunion of Morse, Lavitz, Slone, Morgenstein AIC good call Martin If I may both Grateful Dead W/ Jerry and Phish took breaks and reformed arguably Better than before. At the very least went strong for many years after the reunion/hiatus Dead - 4 keyboard member changes, and took off most of 1975 came back strong to continue 76-95. I personally do not consider the last 3 years STRONG but many great shows in there. Phish took off 5 years 2004- 2009 and are still crushing shows city to city in arenas and stadiums.

Talking reunions here; ok, here are my favorites: Led Zeppelin’s reunion with Jason Bonham on drums for the one-off 2007 concert. Black Sabbath’s Reunion tour and album 13. Mark Farner rejoining Grand Funk for the Concert For Bosnia tour and album. Deep Purple’s Perfect Strangers, House Of Blue Light and The Battle Rages On trilogy. Joe Perry and Brad Witford rejoining Aerosmith for Done With Mirrors. DLR reunion with Van Halen for A Different Kind Of Truth. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen reunion for Steely Dan’s Grammy winning Two Against Nature. Rob Halford’s return to Judas Priest for Angel Of Retribution. Steve Perry’s return to Journey for Trial By Fire. And finally, the RJD return to Black Sabbath for Dehumanizer and the subsequent Heaven And Hell album and tour.

Reunions I witnessed Live: Yes (90125 Tour), Deep Purple (Perfect Strangers, TBRo-if we consider that a re-reunion of the MKII), Thin Lizzy w/ Sykes (talking about reuniting without THE key member), Kiss in 95, The Cult in 95 and somewhere in early OO's, King Crimson (around the Thrak period), Page/Plant, Destruction (in 2006), Queen + Adam Lambert (is it a reunion? Is it Queen?), Fleetwood Mac w/ Nicks & Buckingham in the 10's, Whitesnake in 2009 (the previous tour was after all a farewell tour...), ...so many good memories. Thnx for the reunions!

I love the William Duvall era Alice In Chains albums. They’re incredible and consistent with the Layne Staley albums. I wonder if Martin has ever thought of doing a book on Alice In Chains. I think he would do a great job covering both eras of the band.

So glad you picked up Europe here!! Its one of my favorite bands of al time! Even if I´m Swedish but they are really great. And like you said about the Greatness of thier new records after the comeback its a Thunderstike,. Some peeple that I meet just talk about Europe of the 80s, so great and Big they were., with the look and the sounds of that time., But don´t really have lissen to the new stuff., I I can say : I am a Big fan of the 80s hair metal bands and Europe of that time, the records " Final Countdown" Out of this World " Prissoners in Paradise " But i prefer the new stuff better., ) I have fallowed the since the comeback in 2004 and brought every record sence and like you say : Its a kILLER! WHAT A Sound,. what a style., its more heavier, darker, cooler and deeper. You here their inspitaions from the 70s bands like Deep Purple, Thin Lizzi and UFO. : We dont have so many bands like sounds like this today so thats why they are unice! * * Rock n roll. // Henrik from Sweden.

Really cool show guys!!! Love all the picks and are pretty worthy for the topic My picks (most of these are metal but maybe some rock picks here and there) in no particular order Carcass-surgical steel Coroner (arguably the best band I have seen live). Were inactive for about 20 years breathtaking to see that they are still brilliant at their instruments Heathen-evolution of chaos (one of the best metal reunion albums of all time) Exodus-tempo of the damned ( again one of the best reunion albums along with heathen and carcass) Judas priest-angel of retribution (priest with rob halford back. Really good album) At the gates at war with reality (classic atg lineup that lasted only with one album after the reunion since Anders left. Phenomenal album) Celtic frost- monotheist (an absolute spine crusher. Returning after years of absence with arguably the heaviest album of your career is one of the coolest things one can do) Gorguts-coloured sands (masterpiece of an album with a fantastic concept) Solitude aeturnus-alone (their best)
