It takes more education, interviewing skills, critical reasoning and problem solving skills plus ultimately very solid writing skills among numerous others in order to successfully investigate homicide. Let me briefly summarize my path to making homicide detective, but keep in mind, most folks don't get there as quickly as I did, but they didn't do the extra work like volunteering. I served in the Marines, went to college and obtained a bachelor's degree, during which time I performed plenty of community and volunteer service and studied under a professor who specializes in forensic science. I served as a student intern in a crime lab, in a jail, and in a sheriff's department patrol division before I was sworn in as a reserve officer. I attended and graduated from a reserve police academy, then a regular police academy, and over the next few years was a patrolman. I never said no to any case rather than forward it to detectives, insisted on writing my own search warrants, performing my own follow-up investigations, suspect interviews and interrogation. I worked plenty of overtime, worked my days off, and often worked both for free. I wanted the knowledge and experience rather than the money. Ultimately, I put in for the position and was promoted over a bunch of guys who were there decades before I was but never went to college or did anything to indicate a strong desire to do the job. Rather than ten to twelve years of working and waiting it took me about two and a half years to get the gold badge. It was the hardest job I've ever had, but the coolest, most fun, scary, exciting, often dull and slow, thankless, but fulfilling career I think one could ask for. If I could go back to the beginning of my career and do something else I think perhaps I would try and get a tour on motors (motorcycle AKA traffic enforcement) or go to K9s and work only at night with the dog. Obviously I offered more than some are willing to read, but if that's the case, obviously I didn't write this for those people. Today it is more important than ever to get as much education as you can before entering law enforcement. An English degree with plenty of foreign language folded in is ideal. The current trend in any case is towards a minimum of an associate's degree.

Hitchhikers in a stretch of highway are desperate to get to their destination which makes them easy prey for the hunters of humans. When an individual is desperate they are not thinking with a clear mind. And if the person hitchhiking is sedated it makes them more vulnerable to the predator.

I live in the 🇺🇸 and I have known about the highway for atleast 15 years now. But I saw a documentary about a girl who lived close to the highway and was also killed and left there. The family had never heard of the cases or the Name high way of tears. I found that strange when there are tons of signs and i know about it.

More realistically, it’s people who have the knowledge that reservation police forces can’t punish them if they aren’t in their reservations. I think it was ~60% or so of these attacks on Indigenous people are committed by people not from their reservation. Also, fun fact, Indigenous men are disappearing at higher rates but nobody talks about that either. It’s a horrible way to live when you can’t control what happens to the people who hurt your people. :(

I wasn’t aware of this then, so now I understand my ‘irrational’ concern. To the contrary it's really typical when it involves racists. Prostitution and drugs fuel it and racism sealed it. Therefore the law enforcement and judicial/ education systems of North America are in need of serious reform; not tomorrow, not the distant future: today.

The lack of police response is just the catalyst for public anger. Reform is definietly needed but the people should look at themselves too: what can I do to help to solve this problem? And I mean not only those who were directly linked to the victims, but everyone.
