SAIGON, VIETNAM - I am looking for the best bánh mì in Saigon and have been recommended two famous places to try it. Both locations are situated in the heart of Saigon District 1. First up I head to Bánh Mì Hồng Hoa where I get to try and make my own banh mi before trying the pork patty banh mi. After that I go to the incredibly famous and incredibly busy Bánh Mì Huynh Hoa to see if it really does live up to its reputation as the best banh mi in Saigon. Here I eat the classic bánh mì with all of the cold cuts and pâté.
What I can say is, both are delicious. You will need to watch the video to see which is best.
Banh mi actually just refers to the bread but of course here we are referring to the sandwich. The baguette is light, fluffy and crispy on the outside. You can see the French influence here. It is eaten by locals as a quick snack and you can find them all over Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City).

I tried both these places when I visited Vietnam and they are soooo different from eachother. The bbq pork was awesome and more reminiscent of the types of banh mi we eat in Australia but the one from Huynh Hoa blew me away. It was everything I expected from a Traditional banh mi and totally worth the price. I think about it often ❤

I am Vietnamese who lives in Canada 🇨🇦. The “ Banh Mi “ here costs 7$dollars/ eac. The sad part is that they have only two places selling them. One place is not good, the other is average. I don’t have many choices. I envied you because I know you have more choices in HoChiMinh city. Thank you for sharing this video.

My experience is minimal, but the pickling of the veges; or extra pickles: seems to help cut through the meats and add that extra layer that makes a good banh mi. Otherwise the pate can overpower everything else.

I would think it was the French “period” it went through. Great bread. Such a contrast to the trendy sourdough breads that is taking over the south of Asia.😊

I never tried a proper Banh mi before and always called it a “Vietnamese bun”😂 but the bread we have here is different. The one you had looks good and the bread seems to be crispy..be careful not to break your teeth though! hahaha.

that "lard" is vietnamese "mayo", made of egg yolk, oil, and seasoning, can't be missed in a banh mi.

Yes, that mayo along with the pate is a must. If they don’t have those ingredients it would make a pretty dry roll. 😉

I found the banh mi “Huynh Hoa” a little too dense and rich for my liking. First initial bites were amazing and then it got sickening due to all the pate that was in there. Only managed to eat half the roll and binned the rest. I find the banh mi in Australia to be better. Just my 2 cents 😂
