Hell! Eh Up and How Ya Diddlin!? In this weeks video, we are searching the English countryside for forgotten industry from a bygone era. We start off today, by looking at the maps, then we go out into nature to see if we can find any remains of our first structure, then, we find another one! Both really old Watermills. These two structures, have both been out of use for a very very long time, they are quite wonderful to be honest. The first one hasn’t been looked at for quite some time. The second, is on a foot path, but equally fascinating IMO. The second structure, I had actually looked at a couple of days before, but the first, was strait from the maps, to the field.
I hope you enjoy the video, cheers, Steve ❤️

That were the business. I love that little bridge. It just goes to show how important a mill was to the community back in those days to carry those huge blocks and to build something so substantial and resilient. Thanks Steve, see ya mate

Good finds Steve. At risk of teaching granny, when dating a mill don't overlook the possibility that it has been rebuilt and actually dates from many centuries earlier. Some are mentioned in the Domesday Book. I was involved with Leighton Mill in Shropshire which originally dated from Saxon times. Before the Civil War it was converted to a blast furnace, put out of action by a parliamentarian general who was a Sussex ironmaster and returned to being a mill. In the 19th century it had a house built on the dam which is now a pub.

Yeah I know what you mean buddy, I’m talking in terms of what is there now, like I said with the second mill, that does go back to doomsday thanks for watching mate!

Love it, I often take a home made ranging rod , marked in red and white, in either ft or cm, handy for general views, a Trowell for scraping, gloves so you don't get stung by nettles and perhaps a quick squint at a lidar map for traces of earlier paths etc. Keep doing what you do 👍

@@thisisbob1001 hi mate! Yes, it’s absolutely free. Just type in, google NLS maps, and it’ll come up. I’ve only just worked out how to screen record and narrate at the same time, that’s why I recorded this video in that way. Happy map exploring buddy!

Super cool, and beautiful to see history uncovered! Really interesting to see your map work at the beginning too. Do you have an idea of where you want to look and explore on the map? Or do you spend time scanning for areas of interest? Cheers!
@LeiceExplore
@LeiceExplore 3 ай бұрын
A lot of the time I scan. Of course, some videos I make have been done before, so not so much work required, but something such as this, is not known about unless your local. On the whole, I love looking at maps. What I do is scan the maps, and if I find owt, I right it down in a note pad so I don’t forget.
