The T2 is definitely an improvement over the original T1, especially in regard to the shaping, and functionality. However, maybe it's just nostalgia, but I think the old has some kind of charm that the new one doesn't. I think it's due to the fact that the original is dated looking, yet still manages to pull of the T1 look so perfectly. It's cool because it didn't exactly hide the fact it was Lego brick like the new one does, but it made the look work well, so it didn't need to. It's kind of like the 10187 Beetle vs the new Lego Beetle in that regard. Also, I'm not a fan of the different scaling. I know size has been really inconsistent in the creator expert line, but I find it especially annoying here bc it will make it harder a person who has both sets to display the two together.
@orcashamudeluxeu5672 жыл бұрын
I think te t2 is bland. too many straight lines, too clean. the t1 captures the essence of teh volkswagen bus feeling. It has more, more curves, more bricky textures. just in general it feels more like fun.
@jochenkraus70162 жыл бұрын
On paper the T2 is better: bigger scale, more parts, it's newer and therefore has more sophisticated building techniques. But it still looks a bit off as a scale model while the T1 has some charm. Or maybe it's just nostalgia because car models from Lego were new 10 years ago and now we got used to it.
@orcashamudeluxeu5672 жыл бұрын
@@jochenkraus7016 Its to model like. It doesnt have the lego play and rebuild type fun. nor does it capture the hippy essense of what its ment to be. Its supposed to be a little messy camper van. a bit too cramped and tiny, but everything you need.
@arhainofulthuan2 жыл бұрын
I disagree with the T1 pulling off its look perfectly. The T1 tries to pull off the rounded look, but is too jagged to pull it off for me. The curved windowframes contrast too hard with the straight windows and are too thick because it really needed the scale of the T2 to pull that off. The windows in the T2 are a lot more flush to the frames and the frames appear slimmer, because of the increased scale. The curved (or rather jagged) color sections of the front of the T1 are covered up with curved rods to suggest smooth curves, but this actually deviates way too much from what it is supposed to look like. The T2 is way more faithful to the actual van, is much cleaner and vastly superior for me. It's also due to the actual T2 being less curvy than the actual T1, which I've been noticing with the other sets as well. The Lego Ford Mustang looks a lot more like its counterpart than the Lego Aston Martin DB5 or Porsche 911, because the straight lines of the Mustang are easier to replicate than the curved lines of the Aston or Porsche.

To be honest, I think both aren't great. I can't really look past the fact that Lego just isn't able to properly do the rounded shapes that make up the characteristic windows and fronts of both van models. A shame, because other than that deal breaker, there is something to love in both sets.

I really don't like some of the obvious ratio mistakes in the blue van. The front seats are way too small. And altogether a bit too much effort went into creating a continuous snot surface at the expense of more accurate overall shape and functions (ie back door opening is a very bad design)

Correct! The rear roof section of the T1 is removable as well and the interior also has some other nice features (table to fold down, opening doors of the cabinet/fridge ...). I’ve got both and though some aspects of the T2 are better I still prefer the T1. I just find the interior of the T1 is better, the bed is full length when folded out, has better curtains, and generally more detail. The T1 cab also has foot wells something they did away with for the T2 steering. Both are superb though and well worth having if you like Lego.

T2 generally was not very good looking, it used most of the original design, but lost the split window, also the color of the lego version is off, not as off as it was on the VW Beetle lego, but it is still too vibrant, more faded blue would make this look a lot better. There are only 2 things I hate about the T1 10220 - the fenders are just crap that doesn't hold together, and the build process was not much fun because you get one bag. Sorting through it to find the miniscule pieces was painful, years later I still get angry just thinking about it. One of the worst building experiences I had with any 1000+ pcs set. I love the sliding door on the T2, but why did they have to make it different scale. Same as the Beetle. Doesn''t look that good displayed together.

Great comparison though it's really difficult to single out one as being better than the other with 11 or so years between them. Having only built the T1 I really like the compact sizing, and aesthetic of the front end much better than the T2. T2 however IMO has a better color scheme, and integrated steering as well as the advanced collapsible tent. A worthy successor, and definitely adding to the collection.

The T2 is great, but there are some inaccuracies that i should point out compared to the real ones, as i have experience in this field. (I actually own two of them myself) On the earlier vans, the headlights were at the bottom corners as they are on the T2 but the roof was basically rotated 180 degrees so the roof rack was at the back and the pop top tilted forwards. On the later vans the headlights were beside the front grille and the pop top was as it is on the LEGO model. When designing this, LEGO must have looked at multiple pictures of T2 vans from different years and this explains the inaccuracies.

Mechanically, T2 is far superior, but visually it looks off. Bulky and boring, the whole front end is a mess really. I also dislike the excessive use of snot(doesn't feel like lego, imho).

A thing I hate in general that also applies to this model is the exessive use of colorful pieces that peak through at some places like behind the tires and especially under the roof. I'm pretty sure people older that 18 are able to build even when it does not look like rainbows from the inside. The T1 did not have that issue.
