In this video, (part 1 of a 2 part video) Jerry Cole illustrates the techniques needed to disassemble an old Sears saw that would be considered a "junker". The saw is very heavily rusted, and the blade elevation components are completely seized up.

Just a little tip I use to keep my small parts separated during a rebuild project. Instead of plastic bags I use an old Ice Cube Tray or I have several if I need that many and just stack them on a shelf until time to reassemble. Thanks

It doesn't seem terribly rusty; mostly surface rust. I found this video looking for info on saw fences because I'm shopping for a similar saw at the moment. Having lived on the Gulf Coast most of my life I'm used to unpainted iron and steel rusting quickly. When parts grow together due to rust then you have severe rust. A little oil on parts as they're disassembled goes a long way toward making it easier. For fasteners that don't want to come loose I've found Kroil to be the best penetrant on the market; even better than Liquid Wrench and Knock 'er Loose. Give it time to work, up to overnight, and even the most stubborn parts will come apart. Thanks for the video. It will certainly help me with the saw I purchase. Evaporust, available at hardware and auto parts stores, will remove the surface rust overnight and is not toxic or acidic.

I have that model and no rust for the most part. But I'm learning about it through your videos. Thanks.

my Craftsman tablesaw suddenly wouldn't tilt beyond 20 degrees after working fine for decades. It would get so stiff you couldn't turn the tilt wheel. I checked the rod which was clean and couldn't find any obstructions. People said it was likely my trunions causing the problem which normally means taking the saw apart. Because it's heavy with side tables and a dust box I put it off. Today I decided to look at it again so I removed the motor and blade to get a better look at things. I checked out both trunions and blew them out with high pressure compressed air and cleaned out all the sawdust underneath all over. The tilt was suddenly turning again easily up to about 40 degrees where it would stop. I found that the stop collar was loose and preventing it tilting all the way to 45 degrees. I adjusted the stop collar as far back as it would go but I could not get past about 43 degrees. The collar would stop it just shy of 45 degrees. I decided to remove the stop collar which meant having to remove the long threaded tilt rod. I was able to do this without dismantling the saw, just working from the rear. It meant tilting the undercarriage so the long rod would clear the inside of the base. I took off the stop collar and replaced the rod which wasn't easy trying to get it started again from behind and unable to see it but I finally got it started and put it all back together. I am now able to easily tilt to 45 degrees and more. I was very pleased I got it working again without having to completely disassembling the saw.

Interesting video Jerry! Glad my old Sears saw is in a lot better shape than that one. Of course it is also a lot newer, I bought it new in 1990. Still works great.

Hello. I have a 1980 ish craftsman tablesaw. Its very difficult to run the blade up and down. The assembly looks similar to this one. Do you have any idea of what might make this happen?. I've cleaned and lubricated it but no luck.

The noise that that Shane made when you were pulling it off the shaft set an off a lot about the saw you’re working on! I did the same thing to my saw when I bought it and that was 25 years ago but now the more I work in my shop the more I realize that the fencing system that’s on it leaves something to be desired what would you recommend I replace it with mine has no rail on the back it only mounts on the front and I’ve adjusted it and secured it the best I can but I still have to put a square down there every time I move it or I have to measure the front of the blade in the back of the blade but it’s a great old saw! I know that the blade guard for it is no longer available from Sears and I’m not interested in that I would like to have a riving knife on the side any suggestions? Thank you very much I guess I’m not a kid I’m 61 and I agree anybody under 60 is a kid! ❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

This saw is really messed up! HAH I would have scraped it and get one on craigslist to replace it. Which I did! I found one JUST like this one except with cast iron wings... even had the original pushstick form Crapsman... it was $25 I mean... the amount of work you put in here is commendable but.. GEESH! Not worth your time buddy. I realize it is just for educational purposes but.. you should instruct when to fix and when to walk away... know when to RUN!! hah ...great video though!

Tony Frye he's not talking too much, you're understanding too little. I don't hear him giving a bunch of unnecessary commentary. For someone with a saw in poor condition, this video is golden.
