The Narrator is my dad, John Quimby. This was one of my favourite Seascope episodes as a kid and I can proudly say I am now a Marine Biologist, largely as a result of my dad's unwavering support, this series of short videos and the Ocean Futures Society as well as Santa Barbara Channel Keepers.

Awesome, his voice work is perfect for this. Do you know what destroyer this was? I want to see how and where her career went.

"Not too many people get to ride a sinking ship to the bottom of the sea" Actually, quite a few people have made the trip, but Jean-Michel actually made the return trip.

I had the privilege of meeting Jean-Michel Cousteau shortly before the film was released. I was in the Dept of Biology at WVU and as the only on in the department who had sailing experience and that had been to the Cayman's and Cayman Brac, our department chair thought it was best to send me to represent WVU biology, it was an honor. I got to sit at Mr. Cousteau's table and talk to him in addition to his speech. It was one of the most memorable experiences in my college career. I remember, when I told him one of my first real diving experiences was at Little Cayman, he replied, "ah, so you started at the top eh?" :) Sadly, his dad died shortly after the film.

Name: 356 (later renamed the Captain Keith Tibbetts before sinking). Also known as SKR-471. Country: Soviet-built for the Cuban Navy. Built: 1982 Delivered: 1984 Sunk: 1996 Depth: 90 feet as sunk, but a storm broke her apart in 2004, so it may be different now. Hope this helps!

@@dennisammann9104 No problem. I looked up “Russian destroyer 356” and found that much out from Wikipedia. Apparently she was what NATO referred to as a Koni II-class: only a few are still in service.

Has to be accessible for recreational divers to serve its purpose. I'm sure they sited the sinking location well to prevent it from being moved by storms or wave action. Given the clear water it's hard to judge depth but it appears it's at least 50ft down, maybe more.

Lmao, the Narrator is my dad. This copy (as far as I understand) was used as a promo for Europe where of course it would be dubbed by a different Narrator in the appropriate language/accent. I'm not sure if Seascope ever aired in the US but I could be wrong. In any case, to my dad, everything is fun and funny. It's just how he do, and of course this is geared towards kids so fun and funny is the name of the attention span game.

I find this anthropomorphization of ships an exceedingly odd practice.
