[cc] Texas Parks and Wildlife sank a 7000-ton ship 17 nautical miles off the coast of South Padre Island to create an artificial reef on the barren sandy bottom of the Gulf of Mexico. It has become a haven for marine life, anglers and divers. For more information on the artificial reef program, visit www.tpwd.state.tx.us/landwater...

I was thinking of my youth when I typed "Texas Clippper" in to the Google search engine. To my amazement I saw this video with a picture of my fellow classmates. That was the Shellback Cruise during the summer of 1987. I for one, feel a great sense of satisfaction to see, in the sinking of T/S Texas Clipper, a sort of indication as to fleeting nature of our own existence. And if anyone remembers the mosh pit in Charlotte Amelie gimme a shout. Billy Idol! Remember?

Taylor Walker , like Logan said, she are referred to in the feminine. Unless you're from Russia. Then ships are referred to in the masculine.

Nice to know it's still serving a good purpose. The class at 1:45 is the freshmen class in the summer of 1987. (I only know because I'm in it.)

There are also other types of artifical reefs, like made of concrete blocks, to help the coral reef grow on it. Basically it serves as a base for coral to grow on. But yes, people (us) definitely need to stop the pollution we're dumping into the ocean.

A pretty ship, especially in her ocean liner guise. A pity she had to be scuttled and couldn't be preserved as there are few pre-war ships left and no 'cargo liners' but I guess it's better than being beached and cut up at the Alang shipyards.

There are artifical coral reefs are all over the world! Some are wreck reefs like these but others are purposely designed to shelter and grow coral on it. Follow @SunkenCoral for one of the projects in Thailand!

Don't get too OCD over the wreck being on its side. Hurricanes create immense currents that will pick up wrecks, just like this one, and move them or turn them over. It would hardly be worth the cost to upright it if another good 'cane goes over it - chances are it would end up not being 'perfectly situated' afterward.

Has it been uprighted yet? It's a big income producer? Want to trust, "yup, we can do it but it'll really cost ya" outfits? You've got way more manpower, spirit, and 'model-testing' time already available. Would divers enjoy a few organized events? Event one: Cable setting. Event two: Trash bag clippers. Three: Air bag fillers (air bottles/hoses) ... What's the weight underwater? About half of that lift needed on one side? A few more cables to overhead boats for final control?

I can't believe they were this stupid, to think it was going to flood evenly and sink upright. Anybody who has half filled anything with water and tried to float it knows it will list to one side and stay that way. If they wanted her to sink upright they should have flooded her from one end to the other so she retained lateral stability. This is why the Titanic stayed upright.

Dog: A maritime cadet student could have told them their assumption was flawed. A consulting engineer would have disabused them of this silly assumption.

Titanic is upright because of the depth she is at, hydrodynamic force will right any ship in deep enough water. In this case no chance of this happening. Watch Rob balards hunt for the bismark.

Thats great to sink these, but studies have proven this displaces fish off of the reefs and on to these artificial ones. This also creates a known "fishing ground" where fisherman know fish to be. It makes it just like shooting fish in barrel. Want to make this a great place? Ban fishing on the wreck and closely monitor diving and charge an access fee. Turn it into a wildlife sanctuary.

why not use REAL reefs instead of ARTIFICAL reefs? artificial is never the answer to a problem. for thousands of years real reefs made real life in the ocean. but with all the pollution the reefs died and dead zones happened. instead of fixing the problem and stopping the pollution, they use artificial reefs. it will bring the money in for the fish business but what about the people who eat the fish? just because there is marine life does not mean the water is not polluted.

I know this is late but coral such as the ones in Australia can only survive in a narrow temperature range. Should the temp go out of the range the coral will bleach. Besides most of the Gulf of Mexico is sandy coral need solid surface to grow on such as rock or a wreck. So that’s why they are using artificial reefs.

Plus the ship is stripped for any potential pollutants. Plus these ships help boost the local economy.
@deannelson9565
@deannelson9565 5 жыл бұрын
These are real reefs you idiot they're just built on an artificial substrate! Reefs need solid bedding to fix to IE Rock and much of the Gulf of Mexico has no rock It's just sand and mud so you have to sink something down there that's hard so it's either going to be concrete or metal.
