You can dip your shells in muriatic acid for three seconds, then dip them in regular water to rinse. It will take most of the calcified surface off and leave the lacquer sheen. I quite enjoyed the video.

Ohhh wow! THANK YOU! I have been searching for YEARS how to polish shells, what to use, and how to use it. Thank you for filling in the blanks so that I can learn more about polishing!! Know I know that I CAN polish shells, they DO look beautiful under that top layer, I can use my dremel in water without electrocuting myself and leaving my graestone saying confusing stuff as to how I died, and I know what tip to use AND, most importantly to me: what those tips are called and what each is for. that info is really hard to find. I only ever see lists or a chart and no info on how to use them or what I can use them on. I am so very grateful. N Lastly, holy wow this video is captivating! Great vid just what i was looking for

It has been a long time since I've worked any shell, but I think you can hit it lightly on a muslin buff and get a more glossy finish, I don't remember which color rouge I used on the buff though. You do have to be careful so you don't burn the shell. Nice video.

Liz, how yu doing, I'm from Australia mate, and I had a coral business many years ago, If I can give you some advice about your shell work, all the work your doing I can do in 20 mins, How you say..? hydrochloric acid and water, the acid takes off all the calcification on the shell without loosing to much of the shell that you want to work with, there is a method to it, you don't just dump the shell into the acid and water mix, you brush or sponge it on, hope this helps.

Thank you for the video. You are very skilled. It’s a shame your abalone shells are so pale in colours. Our abalone (Pāua) here in New Zealand are very rich in colour. Deep blues, greens and pinks. I love picking up pieces of pāua on my walks along the beach. The shells standout and glisten in the sand, and water. Most times the sea has already cleaned, ground and polished them for me. I’m also a keen sea glass collector.

Yeah I read a comment further down that says Do Not use electrical tools in water 💧 the voltage from this can kill you! I agree. Please be careful. When I grind on a stone, I just put a few drops on the stone to keep it cool

i have a 1/4 stationary lathe/rotator tool. can it be used on stones as well as shell? i dont know anyone elsebwith the same attachments!

Hi, have you tried to use a tumbler to polish shells? An electronic brass case tumbler or a rock tumbler which one is suitable for the job?

What a great video! :-) I'm interested in using terrestrial molluscs that I have found in Taiwan. I know the molluscs are much more delicate than abalone, but do you have experience or recommendations for more delicate shells. Keep up the great work!

What tool would you recommend to shape the abalone?

Please wear rubber gloves. You are dangerously close to the water with an electrical device which could electrocute you. Love your work.

Hi Liz...I am doing pearl inlay. Is there a specific product that helps bring out a super glossy finish?

If the rotary tool works directly on mains power, you should be very careful while working near water. I'd recommend buying a dremel with a flexible shaft, that way you can keep away the device, and it's also lighter and easier on your hands. Or check if your brand of rotary tool has a flexible shaft available.

Hi I wanted to ask, do u have any videos on clam shells? I'm trying to get an idea of what to do with them. I recently purchased some stuffed clams and when I saw the shells I said I wanted to try to do something with them, can u give me an idea of what I can turn it into besides jewelry, they're large and very sturdy but I have no idea of how to make it look pretty, can u help please!

Heyy Liz !! Loved the video !! It'd be good if you could provide USE of tool for the shell process, for example use of rotary tool in this process, why is metal file or wire brush used. That would be great!! And are these the only tools used? what about giving the shells a shine? how do you do that? It'll be really great if you could answer these doubts since I'm doing a collage assignment on shell craft.

Liz, I love this video! Question: how do you safely use your rotary tool in water? It looks like it is corded. I have been sanding my seashells outside with my Dremel and have to wear goggles and a mask due to the toxic dust. The way you do it in water makes it look so much easier!
