For anyone having problems with a belt removed from the vehicle, the reason he bolts it in first is because the retractor is meant to lock if held at any other angle than what is intended while in place. I played tug of war with this damn thing for 20 minutes before realizing I just had to hold it upright…

Thank you! This was very helpful. I used it to fix a locked belt on an older car. The key was to do as you suggested - pull hard on the belt for long enough to tighten the belt on the spool. As you said, this allowed the spool to turn sufficiently when the belt was released to unlock it. I have put a permanent clip on the belt to prevent it from happening again. Contrary to what some (probably very frustrated folks) have commented, this video was excellent help. So simple, too.

Works for me. After a sudden stop my seat belt locked, belt didn't retract or pull out. Took the whole seat belt out to inspect. Then holding the seat belt in the same upright position as it installed in the car I was able to manually wind a little belt (maybe 1/2 turn) on the spool then pull the belt straight up. Did this 2-3 times then boom it released and retractor worked as it should, just like the video.

The lock mechanism engages if the car's on an incline, etc. so it will also engage if you don't have the part oriented exactly the same way it will be when installed. So hold it upright, give it a couple of taps and/or wiggle the belt a bit, the lock will release. Pull the belt out slowly. Might take a few tries, but it shouldn't require any extreme measures.

I have to say it worked for me, managed to pull it tight to free it about an inch and then hey presto it worked... Garage had told me that they need to take the mechanism to pieces.. but this worked. thanks.

He's right I just did this to my 2015 chrysler 200 and its worked for me

On most seatbelts there is a removable sode cover and you can just use a screw driver to release the locking ball and then take a lot of seatbelt length out

The secret people is very gentle pulling it out. If you can roll it by hand with your left hand and pull it with the right one. It seemed impossible but it worked. Also try gentle taps. The mechanism is just doing it's job! Good luck

(sorry about all caps) MY PROBLEM IS THAT THE SEAT BELT IS TWISTED INSIDE THE RETRACTOR, SO IT WON'T PULL OUT, AND IT CAN'T BE PUSHED BACK IN. ISN'T THERE A 'LOCK' OR A 'LEVER' THAT CAN DISENGAGE THE RETRACTOR AND ALLOW THE BELT TO BE PULLED ALL THE WAY OUT TO UNTWIST IT?

Most have a roll over safety installation. Just make sure the car or seatbelt cartridge is straight up and down, and pull slowly perfectly upwards.

Video doesn't show how to sort it in a car, and it didn't show how to get the seat belt to retract when the seat belt is locked fully unwound with no give.

I was skeptical with the ease fix. But it does work. First make sure the retractor is straight with the belt as in the video, then after releasing it a little bit, you should hear a faint click, pull the belt at that moment, continue to do so for more access to the belt

You guys! This video is NOT a waste of time. The trick is to INSTALL the seatbelt or hold it perfectly vertically and SLOWLY. Keep doing it and you’ll see how it unlocks.

Mine is stuck tight for no reason I can see. It will not let you pull on it at all. Sooooo...went out, popped the molding away from the area of the drivers side, naturally, seat belt attachment & pushed something on the side which then released it again, so thank you so much for your video.

I extracted a working seatbelt assembly from a junk car to swap into my 2007 Saab 9-3. Removal on site was flawless but upon inspecting piece, the belt sucked itself into the spool before I could stop it and now the entire thing is inside the spool! Is this video the correct solution?

Didnt really help as theirs no slack on mine to pull at all. I own a 53 plate citroen berlingo multispace i folded the seats down now i cant get the seats to go back in the upright position. Any ideas on what to do

Trying to release the belt by holding the housing in your hand IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM, you cannot hold still while holding the housing in one hand and try to pull with the other, is like going down a bumpy road and trying to release the belt, it will simply lock up on you. First thing you do is firmly bolt it in the correct direction perpendicular to the floor, roll in the spool a bit and jerk the belt up...it will release if is not broken. I have sold thousands of new replacement out of eBay, originally made for the Humvee, but will work on the most of other vehicles and sometimes I have a customer calling with a "stuck" belt...thanks to UPS being so gentle with the package.. "rolling eyes" and 99.9% is because they did not read the instructions and try to release the belt but holding the housing in their hands.

Great video, took me 2 minutes to unlock my seatbelt.

The ones with the plastuc casing usually a japanese car are just easy, simply take the side plastic the one housing the retractor and it will easily get loosen, usually its because the rubber stopper has expired and deteriorated so instead of giving back a slack it'll just eat it. Once you take that out it will have a direct link and no useless stopper to cut off everytime you pull it out.

So I let my new seatbelt on my 2008 Beetle roll all the way up during installation and it locked... won’t go in or out. Been trying to tug on it forever but stays locked. If I put it back on the car and pull it hard it’ll unlock??? Mind boggling if true as it’s so simple yet been driving me crazy for 3 days. Anyone confirm if this is my problem and the way to fix it?

Yeah but the retractor on my Chrysler Sebring, Cirrus body IS defective. Factory defective, that they never recalled. It'll go aaaaall the way out, then all the way in and stay locked. This is not the video I'm looking for.

This may be the worst video of all time.

If the car has been in an accident the retractor permanently locks up and must be replaced or sent out for repair. Such is the case on my '07 Mustang. There is a gas charge and sensor built into the retractor. If this is what you have then you can pull on it until the cows come home and it won't budge. Stupid video.

No. This video is totally worthless. There is no slack in the belt, the bolts cannot be removed without cutting them off with a grinder or torch and the belt will not retract to release.
