The new 10 cm thick Sea to Summit Ether light XT Extreme sleeping pad, or camping mattress, represents a significant investment in cost, bulk in your pack and weight compared to less insulated models.
I wanted to find out if it was not just comfortable on paper, but would there be actually less pressure getting through to the ground when I lay on it, compared to the Sea to Summit comfort light insulated and the comfort plus.
All of these are great mats, but would the extreme prove worth its promise.
Join me using equipment that I usually use for gait analysis as I lie and sit on the pads both fully inflated then deflated slightly to comfort.
Then I go on a wet and windy Northumberland wild camp for the first nights test.
I am raising funds to buy an emergency beacon to help keep myself and the youngsters including Scouts I take out. Thanks! www.buymeacoff...

Gonzo review. The pressure transducer analysis makes it stand out against all others. I’m 105kg and side sleeper… I think the Extreme is going to be the penalty I will have to pay for comfort even in a warmer climate. Tough choice though vs the standard Light XT… hmm

Brad. Go for the thermarest xtherm nxt. Much warmer, then a budget but comfy pad for summer like the flextail.

Very in-depth review there Dave, it's cool you have the kit available in the lab to do all that testing. I use an Xtherm, it's warm but no where near as thick as the XT Extreme. Good informative video mate, Storm Star looking good there as well ;) ATB, Mark

Cheers mate, the Xtherm vs the extreme in a pressure test (top surface) would be good.

Have been using the standard Ether Light XT range for years now and wouldn't use anything else. As you said and something I had planned on trying is to supplement it over winter with an extra roll mat to bump up the R value.

Cheers Ray, I agree , for uk conditions the standard is the way. I will probably sell one and get a standard next spring for the warmer seasons. Allt thebest Ray and thanks for commenting. Hope the vavavoom is twinkling

I bought extreme 2 months ago went down several times on first night had to bail at midnight. the mat is absolutely fantastic but gutted as I sent it back to sea to summit they said we can’t send you a replacement as we’ve completely sold out of all the extreme range. Now I have no mat to camp ☹️

Great comparisons there. I love the Gorilla tape on the spares' genius . Really hoping for the cold weather to test the pad. ATB

Excellent thorough review David! Exactly the mat I've been looking for. One question, the Thermorest NeoAir has a reputation of being noisy like a crinkling crisp packet. How noisy did you find the SeatoSummit? Thank you!

Hi David and thanks for commenting again. Most of the observations I have seen and my experience is when you rub a bare thumb over it, there is a marked rubbery vibration. Happily 'bare thumb rubbing' is not something I do a lot of when camping so I have found it fine. Unless you particularly want cold weather performance though I would go for the S to S etherlite xt and not the extreme version. There is a modest packed size saving but a significant 300g in weight. You a welcome to have a look at mine of course.

Hi Is it possible that you are going to make a review of the Sea to Summit Ether light xt Exstreme, where you compare it to some of the other winterpads, like Therm-a-rest NeoAir Xtherm, Nemo Tensor Alpine, Exped Downmat 9 and so on...?

Hi Dave. Is there any reason to get the Comfort Plus at all? Just seems heavier and its not thick enough. Does the dual chamber design work?
@mulreid
@mulreid Жыл бұрын
Just to add they now call it the comfort plus XT. Have they made it thicker as the current specs indicate 8cm. Yours doesn't look that thick so is it an older model?

Hi. In my opinion the one to go for is the etherlite xt....the grey one. Super comfy, thick and resonable R value. Just use a foam z lite type underneath in winter and you're good for 4 seasons. I would not get the comfort plus. Heavy with little benefit. Cheers, hope that helps.

I'm thinking of getting 1 I've just been out in the lakes with the either light xt it was a very snowy cold day and the ground was very cold I paired it with 1 of those thin foil on both side blanket things and a 3mm closed cell foam mat I definitely could still feel the cold through it.them was around 0c or just below I don't think it would go any lower temp.so the added weight bulk are worth it maybe for a warmer better r value mat I'm still unsure though.
