Seattle Leads Nation in EV Charging Station Vandalism: Copper Theft Crisis

Күн бұрын

Seattle tops the nation for the most electric vehicle (EV) charging stations vandalized by copper thieves, with incidents doubling over the past year. The widespread theft has left many charging stations inoperable, severely impacting EV drivers who rely on these facilities. Electrify America, which operates numerous stations across the U.S., reports Seattle as the hardest hit, followed by Nevada and California. The issue is exacerbated by the city's lenient stance on homelessness and drug addiction, which has contributed to a rise in petty crimes like cable theft. Despite efforts to curb these incidents with increased security measures, the problem persists. This situation underscores the broader challenges faced by cities with progressive policies on homelessness and drug use, raising questions about the effectiveness of such approaches in maintaining public infrastructure and safety.

There's a way I think. The cables are disassembled and the recyclers don't know exactly where the copper comes from. There's a way of overmolding the wires with a Kevlar sheath. Essentially it would make it near impossible to cut the cord and better yet extracting the copper would be so labor intensive even the tweekers would give up. Then back it up with a 20 year sentence if your caught with a cut cord or caught recycling it.

@@stewart8127 I know. Preventing it from being cut probably isn't the answer. I'm thinking the cable can be made in a way where getting the copper out exceeds the financial feasibility of the value of the copper. I don't know how many wires are in them but I imagine the one they're going after is the HV line that carries the actual charge. Essentially a pair of wires could be molded inside the insulation. To extract the wire would be equivalent to peeling the rubber off a new tire to get to the steel cords inside. It won't stop the vandalism but it'll take the financial incentives away if it's more work than it's worth.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I was talking to sons about these subject 2 years ago. One of my sons commented that as long as the economy doesn't improve people will start stealing stuff. He gave the EV charging station as one of his examples, with all of the electronics and cooper just waiting to be grab. This not just happening in Seattle. I've witness a truck just pulled up to several charging stations, put a hook and chain around each one and pulled. Then a couple of guys jump out, put the stations in the truck and drive away. They stole 3 charging stations in less than 2 minutes outside a library.

Cure: Have the electric cars have there own cable, to plug into a parking lot charging station. A waste of time sitting around waiting for your car to charge anyway .Short range too. The batteries do not like the 200f degree road temperature this summer. The winter cold either. Gets down to 0 to 30 f ..dead and short range batteries during winter.

This is going to be extremely difficult to stop , coper wire is copper wire once the insulation is stripped off. I have been expecting this to get extremely bad for a few years . Stripping wire out of all manner of structures has been happening a very long . It happens to houses, apartments, and lighting in parking lots . One of my friends hired a welded to weld the access panels in place because the wire was being stolen every night. It was about to bankrupt his business because he did not get paid until the job was finished.

Costs for registration of an EV in most states is $200-$300 a year. If you buy in Texas there is an EV registration fee of $400 to drive the car off of the lot. Insurance costs are also high. You may not have to change the oil in an EV but the registration fees bite into the savings.

Your are way out of touch, go check the data. Your massively inefficient gas guzzler is 60X more likely to catch fire than an EV. Every day in the US 500 gas/diesel cars catch fire. 300 catch fire every day in the UK. Ford, GM, Hyundai, KIA, Range Rover, Mazda, Honda, BMW, McLaren, Jeep, Subaru all have had recalls due to risk of fire. Many of the recalls warned owners not to park in or near buildings because fire could occur even with the ignition off. I have one of those recall notices sitting on my desk for a gas vehicle that I no longer own.

@@muskrat3291 There were several houses that caught on fire during charging last winter. The fire dept was telling people not to charge inside garages. They pull cars out and cover them w/ a rubber like tarp to try to suffocate the fire long enough to get it out of city limits. Lithium burns till the car is dust, water, foam, suffocation will not stop a lithium fire.

Why not make them with retractable cords.Put your card in and it releases the cord and the charger continues billing your card until your done charging and the cord is sucked back into the charger if they fail to put the cord back they pay for the replacement.
