yea you need a certain level of "understanding" to fully get what they are saying, plus understand the slang. Its kinda like Seinfeld. its funny, but if you live in NYC and understand the cultural references, then its just SOOO intelligent, humorous and groundbreaking. glad you enjoyed this one more.

Wu aren't exactly a beginner friendly rap group to get into lol it takes some background knowledge of the slang and culture around that time. I recommend listening to "The World is Yours", and "If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)" by Nas. I also suggest listening to "Electric Relaxation" and "Check The Rhime" by A Tribe Called Quest. getting into the more conscious and jazzy side of 90s rap will help a ton later when trying to get into more rougher East Coast side of the genre.

ODB was locked up so he couldn't be on it. Cypher is a circle of people rappin. He's calling them punks. Some Wu members used to travel throughout the NYC boroughs and battle people in cyphers. My favorite verse on this track was always Masta Killa. He's making a lot of references to the teachings of the nation of Gods and Earths. And then he says the best line ever "Giving sight to the blind, the dumb are mostly intrigued by the drum, Death only one can save self from". This is saying that Wu is giving you knowledge, but the ignorant people only hear the drums, not the wisdom in the lyrics. And giving knowledge through music is like giving sight to the blind. And listening to the knowledge is like saving yourself from a slow death of the mind.

They grew up watching old kung fu movies in theaters. They came from rough homes and got lost in the fantasy of the movies as children, their escape , which inspired all the kung fu refrences. Or thats what I remember being said. Maybe helps make sense. Was never a fan of the northern rap sound myself, but understand the concept and love they get.

It's going to be really hard to listen to just a couple WuTang songs and be able to understand the lyrics. That's one of the great things about WuTang. Their lyrics are like a different language. A lot of it is 5% Nation of Islam and Staten Island(Shaolin) street lingo. But cool thing is when you do figure it out your in a small group. This is going to be corny to say but true, a lot of people listen to WuTang but only a few understand WuTang. Side note the Method Man lyrics was" what the bloodclot/we smoke pot"

@BehindTheBeatReactions RZA actually wrote The WuTang manual Which has a whole Dictionary part that breaks down the meaning of words and phrases. Couple quick ones for you and anyone else that reads is. A lot of the phrases come from 5% Nation. They have what's call mathematics which is 1-10 where each # represents a word. A lot of NY rappers from the 90s use this; Nas, Mobb Deep etc. So when they say culture culture that 44 which would be a 44mag gun or culture Cypher that's 40 which is either a 40cal gun or a 40oz beer. You hear them say "God" alot, as in "peace God" "what up God" That's cuz 5% believe the original man was a black man so that present man is the creator of everything hence they are the Gods. It's not all Islam stuff they rap about everything From drug dealing to physics to astronomy to history. They're raps the blow your mind if you break down the lyrics. It stuff you would not think young black men from the Staten Island projects would rap about. I mean hell, GZA has held lectures at Harvard. These dudes are awesome. I think if you took a little bit of time to break down some of the songs and lyrics you would become fans too. Sorry for the super long message. I'm a 42 year old white catholic dude but I've been a huge WuTang fan for 25 years so I get really hyped when I met someone who's just found our about Wutang. Thanks yall
