It is a huge, once in a couple generations urban project. They used the biggest tunnel boring machine in the world to put several lanes of traffic underground right on the waterfront, before tearing down the double decker highway. Because of the topography of the area, it is not possible to eliminate this north/south traffic route. This is not only the port for the largest ferry system in the world, but it is a popular tourist destination. I lived downtown, five blocks up, for years, leaving in 2019. I think a lot has been accomplished in spite of technical difficulties and a pandemic! You did not mention those glass pieces in the sidewalk. Those are to let light down into the water for the marine ecosystem. Don’t give up yet. A couple more years and it will be an amazing accomplishment for a city of this size.

Butt ugly.. it's still a gigantic road stuffed with cars.. was doomed since day 1. Barely an improvement. Billions and billions down the drain because of Seattles terrible leadership

The Viaduct was also an earthquake hazard, the big quake in San Francisco in the late 80’s demonstrated that. There were a few freeways built the same way that collapsed on top of the lower deck, tragic.

$113 million Ocean Pavilion for the Seattle Aquarium, playgrounds, a new walkway from Pike Place Market to the waterfront, rerouted traffic patterns, pedestrian and bike paths, a new ferry terminal, piers large enough to hold concerts, a stormwater filtering system and rocky stretch of beach for people to sit. These is just some of the features of the new Waterfront.

Nice video. You mention all the "tons of concrete" as part of the Overlook Walk/Aquarium project, it's actually not what you see. There is building space beneath those stairs for the Aquarium equipment (tanks, pumps, etc..), and geo-foam. As for greenery, the project adds 100's of new trees, and large planters (which you can't see right now, but will be in place).

I'll never get used to the view without the viaduct(and the free parking underneath). I hope that the waterfront will be user friendly and not the signature Seattle traffic cluster. That is a lot of concrete! But that waterfront is all fill and a seawall dams the sea from going where it naturally would go . Keep walking to Myrtle Edwards Park....it's a real park.

In Gran Turismo 2, there was a Seattle street circuit that went by the viaduct, smith tower and the stadium. But yes, many cities in america 100% dont feel like they are by the water because of horrible planning. Manhattan doesnt feel like an island.... but it is!

What Seattle should do along the busy intersections along the waterfront is have elevated crosswalks like they have in Las Vegas it works very well pedestrians don't interfere with the flow of traffic and vice versa. It looks like there's enough room to do it at the ferry terminal at least. I was born in Seattle and grew up in the Seattle area, Seattle has changed quite a lot. I avoid it now, I've only been there maybe 5X in 20 years for concerts only. I worked there 27 years (Rainer Brewery) Parking there is ridiculous so is the homelessness (drug) population. I hope they've taken into consideration the Cascade Subduction earthquake that WILL happen and the resulting tsunami.

COVID and the Teamsters Local 174 Construction/Concrete/Cement Strike impacted the projects timeline. They’re planning on installing a new and improved pedestrian overpassed near the ferry. The place you complained about being too narrow, that’s where the old Pier 58 was before it succumb to old age. In its place, they are planning on making a massive park that will extend out over the water. I’m most exited about the scenery, especially from the promenade. Your perceived lack of greenery, that you constantly complain about, in my opinion will be secondary to the view. Connecting Pike Place Market to the Waterfront was a genius move, as Pike Place is the main tourist draw, not greenery. The concert pier decking you mocked will hold up much longer than a wood one as wood deteriorates quicker than concrete in a sea salt environment. My memories of trips to the Seattle waterfront are filled with the smell of the creosote that they used to preserve the wood decking. I’m guessing creosote covered decking wouldn’t fly today. So, in my opinion the concrete decking was the correct choice. You really should do better research before producing a video where you are bad mouthing a project that hasn’t yet been completed and are constantly complaining about thing that have already been addressed. Also, it’s not a sea, it’s a sound.

Greenery is everything. This was a great and honest video pointing out the obvious shortcomings of the development where grand claims fall short and the walkable promenade lined with trees is nowhere to be seen and by the looks of it will never happen. Otherwise why rebuild the same size highway right next to where it was just removed? Only on ground level. If anything this made it worse. Construction of that scale is never temporary. Just look at how busy streets are removed in Netherlands when done right. The biggest indicator of a quiet walkway taking shape had to be the rapid drop of noise levels. Far from it in the apparently doomed waterfront of Seattle.
@DK-pl8xd
@DK-pl8xd Жыл бұрын
@@AndyJayLark It’s more like a Seattle slamming video. All the rendered images I’ve ever seen are full of trees. What do you want them to do, plant a forest? If the end result isn’t good enough for you, go for a drive and find a forest, Washington State is full of them.
@AndyJayLark
@AndyJayLark Жыл бұрын
@@DK-pl8xd Images full of trees, yet reality full of concrete and cars in brand new multiple lane highway. That’s the point is that they differ (the images and reality) to the extent of being polar opposites. What’s there to defend? They’re just facts. 🤷‍♂️
@DK-pl8xd
@DK-pl8xd Жыл бұрын
@@AndyJayLark The fact and reality is, is that the project is still under construction. So, you’re delusional in thinking you can judge it before they have even completed it. Also, you can’t compare Seattle’s waterfront construction to the flatlands of the Netherlands and their street transformations. First off, Seattle is hilly, not flat. Plus, if you knew anything about Seattle’s history, you would know that when the city was first laid out they did it incorrectly. Today’s Seattle city planners have to workaround numerous hills, plus the unfortunate planning choices made in the past.
