Showing you the technique I've used for several years now to repair any loc with a weak base. If you have thinning locs and you notice that there is still hair at your scalp, then you can use this technique to strengthen the roots of your locs. So often we focus only on how too much dreadlock maintenance can lead to thin locs but not enough on how too little maintenance can also lead to thinning locs. This video will show you how to fix your own dreads in minutes!

Loctician here, 20+ year experience. This braiding is a nice technique. If there's enough hair I usually do a similar thing but I use a latchhook needle for it as you can also draw the ends of the loose hair into the lock. If it's straight hair and there's a lot of loose hair I usually make a quick mini lock next to the weak lock and then join them. This gives immediate thickness to the base.

Omgggg!! I am so grateful I came across this video! I’ve been locked for a little over a year and my Locs were starting to thin already… this is what was going on. Best love repairment video ever! Now I know why they be thinning! I have so much new growth around my locs but it's kinda short. So now I'll take my time for the next few months creating concoctions so they won't be so dry during the winter. And just start braiding my roots! I did one now and it tremendously gave the lock a better stronger base

Thank you for educating us on how to manage the issue of hairs growing away from the locs. I watched an older video of yours showing the crochet method to incorporate the hairs into the loc. Do you still recommend this method? I have microlocs and have a hard time with the braid technique. It's probably operator error lol. I am still repairing locs from going too long between interlocking. My locs thinned out terribly and I lost a few before realizing that my hair grows away from my locs.
@AtreyuLocs
@AtreyuLocs 2 жыл бұрын
You’re very welcome and I understand completely. I’ve never tried the crochet method on super small locs so I’d just be careful, if you do try, to make sure that you’re not breaking any strands while matting the hairs together. Because they’re smaller locs, then that means that you have fewer strands and therefore less room for error. I might actually make a video on this topic. Thanks for the idea!🙏🏾 I hope that helps. If it is a matter of user error with the braid technique, you might want to give it another go. The key is having enough hair that is also long enough to braid into the loc. Thanks for writing me!🙂
@Journey.ToSelf

@@AtreyuLocs you're welcome and thanks as always for your thorough response!! I've been considering combining my locs to get a stronger base. I have done a lot of combining already for the purpose of self maintenance. I went from 621 microlocs to currently 204. Obviously, if my hair grows away from the locs, it will do that whether I have thicker locs or not. My question for you is, in your opinion do you believe it is easier to manage the issue when you have thicker locs and base versus smaller? I hope my question makes sense. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. Your videos have saved my locs 😊
@AtreyuLocs
@AtreyuLocs 2 жыл бұрын
There’s no guarantee how your new growth will behave. For example, my hair doesn’t grow away from my locs on every loc. Only some. So it’s possible that that phenomenon may improve with larger locs. Honestly, you just have to keep an eye on your locs as they will always tell you. That’s what I’ve done. I hope that helps!🙂

It’s funny. I’ve had dreads all my life practically. I cut my hair because of this problem but I grew them back and having this same problem. I started using the braid/twist method on my own before even seeing this 😂😂 I also have really bad nerve habits, so I play in my hair a lot and that’s a no no, I gotta stop doing that I already have a weak base. I was just wondering does any dread stylist do loc thickening? Or is it any way to add more hair to the loc. Like adding extra hair and crocheting it into my base making it stronger
@AtreyuLocs
@AtreyuLocs 3 жыл бұрын
Not to my knowledge. The best way to thicken your locs is to do whatever you can to thicken the hair that’s coming from the scalp. When you add hair to the loc, that’s more weight that needs to be supported by the strands that are coming out of your scalp already supporting the loc. And so it can lead to thinning if it’s too much weight. Just try to do what you can to grow healthy hair and the locs will follow suit.

Hey atreyu mahn I used the braid method on my dreads it works good, I have high top dreads for about 2yrs 6months but I've been growing out my sides for 6 months now and used the braid method to attach a few of the side hair into the dreads on the sides, it worked great but when i washed my hair today it unravelled out of the braid, should I not wash my hair for a while so that it can lock up or any other suggestions???🇿🇦❤️
@AtreyuLocs
@AtreyuLocs 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for letting me know how it worked out for you. If the new growth is long enough, it should stay put even when washed. But you could always re-braid it right after the wash. You could also use a crochet hook to incorporate that hair on the side into those locs. I hope that helps!

I think it’s the locticians I used. I went to South Carolina locs were repaired all my bases were strong she even was disbelief at what had been done to my head. I go somewhere new in Midwest I now have holes in my locs. I then go back to where my locs were started to have holes repaired they made me pay 30 consult fee to say yes locs can be repaired. The owner was pacing back and forth complaining about my reviews for them being late and forgetting my appointment after I confirmed I be at my appointment the day before. Both ladies that did my locs at her shop have disappeared she has her and her sister working at the shop only no staff. I’m just checking and finding out her only staff is her and her sister I was unaware they were family. My loc maintenance was set up on her website for $80. I ask how much this going to be I was 10 weeks would of been 9 weeks since my last maintenance of interloc but they had no Availability so her sister tells me 125. They now charge to shampoo hair. $25. While under dryer I see her go towards where her sister the owner is. After i get from under dryer she says $255=$230 plus 25. I notice when done she doesn’t give me a mirror like the other clients I get home check my locs she did nothing to repair what was done by previous interloc maintenance which resulted in holes in my locs at the base. The front I don’t see the issues I see at the back all over my head in back my dreads are larger after 2 to 4 inches at my base of my scalp immediately I fear the dreads will be to heavy to support my base. U are saying only 2 reasons. What about a 3rd- intentional damage by locticians y around my edges my bases look and feel strong but the back it’s like loctician rushed my head to get me out and I am in fear of losing my whole head of hair. I notice most of her clients photos are of dark skin I’m bright hi yellow I don’t think I’m better because I’m light skinned but I feel these women all had something against me because of my shade. Her sister said we would cut off my combined loc because I have a bunch of V all over my head in South Carolina the loctician said no u just use a tool to combine them. Y are we still in the black community still dealing with light skin vs dark skin. None of my parts are neat it’s like she scraped my new growth and just spinned it together so instead of my roots matching the size of my locs. I just don’t believe going 3 weeks past 7 th week caused it. Her sister said to me if people don’t come in 4 to 7 weeks we won’t make any money. My hair is not for locticians to keep regular money come in my hair don’t grow that fast to where it causes all this damage to have thinning locs at the base it’s from how these locticians tighten or retwist. If u see my locs they are not neat uniform and all my loctician have been of darker skin well darker than me. I look at other clients their locs are neat and uniform my entire loc experience for going on almost 3 years has been locticians saying it’s my fault when I went to South Carolina 16 hours away she said honestly no one can tell u how to do ur hair just let ur locs do what they do. I also had a virtual consult with well known loctician that travels from ATL and New Jersey she said to let ur locs do what they do. Over maintenance can cause thin locs at base and technique both these some are of darker skin but in my area the locticians seem to have attitude defensive like I’m walking into room thinking I’m setter than them and all I want is my hair to be done correctly and not charged almost 300 dollars for interloc maintenance no hair was added here so why overcharge me and jack my hair up???……jealousy!
