As a MK4 Golf owner I can say they’re extremely comfortable and great solid cars.

MK5 GTIs were great! As for the R32 - biggest problem is no one who purchased one new has driven it lightly… same with buying a used WRX - R32s and WRXs have hard lives…

Yeah, I've got a golf MK2 (Memphis) got some rust under the windshield, but ALSO under the rear bumper, where the side panel join the rear one, i've got some rust here too ! Check that too ! I you forgot that, the car is incredible reliable, and the engine still run smooth after 380 000+ km !

How old are these segments? I agree with most posters here that you won't find good examples of those cars for the price they mentioned. Maybe these segments were made at a time when a Mk II GTI was a backyard used car - not a rising classic. Basically I like this consumer targeted advice - it's just gotta be usable in real life...

If you are actually looking for a VW alternative that is cheap, Skoda is where it's at. Got a Fabia for 450£ second hand, has been working like a charm for 2 years now. Last year I had to replace the factory clutch disk because it was worn out...it was in there for about 15 years...

5k £ for a R32? Here in Germany they start at 12k € and a Mk2 GTI for 1.5k£? you cand find one overhere for under 7k(or over10k) in relatively good shape

Is he mad hahaha? Lupo gtis are super rare, can't say I've ever seen one in Ireland. Likewise for a genuine MK 4 R32. If anything these cars are nearly more sought after than a new gti.

I’ve got a lupo it’s only a 1.0 though it’s still a cracking car not the quickest but fun round corners another think with any mk4 golf is check for rust on the wings which is very common also the bonnet above the logo and on the boot handle

If youre considering a new gti, youre not likely to be looking at mk2s or lupos are you? The new up gti is similar in concept to the old lupo. Looks like a fun car.

That Polo GTI is awesome. You can go all out on public roads, unlike bigger faster cars you need a race track to really feel how powerful it is.

r32s 4.5- 7k lupo gti as low as 2k-4k mk2 gti 2.5-4k in 2019. really nice mk2 and r32 can be £££££ but lots about at this price

If you're buying with your head, it has to be the MkII Gti, look after it and in 10 years it will be worth double or more, the other two will only depreciate, especially messed about ones like those

I had the 6n2 polo gti a much better car than the lupo. Miss it was a right little weapon.

Real alternatives: Megane, Cleo, Focus RS, Peugeot 306, Peugeot 205 GTI. Even old VWs are overpriced for what you get, especially the Mk4 Golf.

What to look for in a Lupo GTI? How about "a Lupo GTI"? No argument about the car itself (I used to own one), but these things are properly rare. VW didn't build a lot of them and low(-ish) mileage ones in unmodified condition are getting rather expensive. Also: It comes with more strings attached than a Golf GTI. I sold my Lupo and got into a (then new) Mk 5 Golf GTI back in the day, because the Lupo was just too annoying on longer motorway-trips. At higher speeds (say, 140+ kph), that car's cabin gets properly noisy. Oh, and the steering feels way too "soft" and disconnected ... probably the only part of the car that doesn't feel GTI-like.

Volkswagen cars are nice to drive however the reliability on some is a bit average at the best I got a 2008 VW polo mk4 had to replace timing belt just under 50000 km also had to do air conditioner compressor and front suspension bushes it runs ok now but it cost a few grand to fix because the problems emerged after the warranty ran out.To anyone buying one by a base line model new and keep it for about five years and trade it in before the warranty runs out as for buying old second hand GTI models such as the ones shown in this video I reckon anyone buying something like these old high performance models its not just buyer beware just forget it most if not all old high performance Volkswagen cars have likely been thrashed and are nightmare for any sucker who is foolish enough to buy from someone trying to offload their problems onto someone else.Better off if a person can afford it buy a new base polo or something similar and chuck on some fancy wheels etc believe me these old bangers are just waiting to pack it in.

These car programmes live in cloud cookoo land where the fuck can you find a mk2 Golf gti in that condition he was driving for £1500 people ask that price for MOT failed ones or they need a complete rebuild, cheapest Lupo Gti I could find in any decent condition started a £4000 and as for getting a so called cheap R32 mk4, well put it this to buy one in the condition he was driving was like getting a re mortgage on my house.

Or you could just buy all three.

The Lupo is basicly a scam, look for a Saxo VTS or a 106 GTI instead, they're lighter, more agile and pleasant to drive, faster, slightly bigger on the inside and i personnaly think the 106 look way better than the Lupo. And they're also both cheaper to fix than the VW

R32=to heavy you can get much better cars for that price vw lupo gti=still a lupo😂 My choice=vw golf 3 VR6 2.8 a undistructible great engine whit a great sound to it.i will recognize one from mile away
