Are y'all ready for part II? Today we are reviewing what may be some of the funniest (and some of the most painful) ballet "fails", "mistakes", and "mishaps" we've ever seen 😱
Hopefully we, with the help of these ballet bloopers, faceplants, and amazing recoveries can help remind you that mistakes happen to everyone, and that mistakes are ok 🥰

As a professional ballerina, I was taught from the beginning that if something falls onstage and you can get rid of it, it’s your responsibility to do it. I’ve fallen in class being a little extra with my fouettés too. I laughed so hard.

Super extra late here, but I love how you guys always pointed out something good the dancers did despite the fail - checking on each other, continuing to dance, getting up quickly, holding their pose so their partner could try again. It made it so much more fun to watch than just seeing all the mistakes. But also I totally watched every mishap twice, once to see what happened and then again to enjoy your reactions too. You two are priceless!

The “dramatic cape flip” provoked that rare “double-guffaw” phenomenon for me - one for each repetition. Thank-you!

I love how the music at 5:20 fit perfectly for the guy getting entangled in the curtain xD also, that moment when the cape gets caught under Odile's foot (11:20) feels really symbolic for their dynamic xD

I've been that guy at the end, who screwed up the very last thing he had to do on stage... though in my case I was at the piano, not dancing. I was playing C.P.E Bach's Solfeggietto, a swirling late-Baroque piece in the key of C minor. Note that key. It was going very well. My switches in notes between left and right hands were clean, clipped, well-timed; I had the dynamics of louder and softer passages coming through clearly, leading into the final rush up the keyboard. Not a single mistake had I made, until that very last note, when I arpeggioed my way up the keyboard... and concluded the piece with a crashing C SHARP. This was followed by my loud "AAARGH!" and an immediate thump of the C natural. The literal only note I screwed up was the very last one in the piece. My audience fell about laughing, so at least there was that.

When I was dancing in a gala in Moscow, the ballerina in the PDD before mine (beautiful dancer performing Flower Festival) face planted the floor from arabesque like the Swan in the video. It was horrible and we all thought it was due to a slippery spot we all avoided all night. It sadly turned she was doing some bad things to lose weight and passed out. I’ll never forget it.

"Ballet isn't for men because it is fluffy" HA! I say and a double HA HA! Every single guy (myself included) in our ballet class leaves feeling like we've run two marathons back to back. Our teacher is lovely but she pushes you to improve as much as you reasonably can. Anyone who thinks any form of dance is not a gruelling work out is a fool who lives in blissful ignorance.

In my amateur running classes, we make an exercise, a one-leg burpee, so exhausting!. Well, one day I saw a female ballet dancer doing that like almost nothing. They are BADASS!!..

As a recovering ballet man … I’ve seen the most talented principal with a major company do a belly fop to the floor in performance, just on landing a Grand Jeté En Tournant. Sometimes it’s just a fault in the stage flooring. It happens. While this was an obvious fall, … I admire and make note of the many saves I view in pirouettes & such gone off balance. One can see the initial bobble, or off-center angle early, … yet the save/the expert finish, the recovery is virtuosic … much of ballet dancing expertise is in the saves, the Houdini-like escapes … requisite virtuosity

I’ve seen dancers come running out to a grande jete and then splat. He jumped up and kept going. It was amazing.

That was fun girls. They all recovered so well. The last one was like “exit pursued by a bear”. I once had a piece of scenery comedown but it was an arch so just went over me. Managed not to corpse! Thanks for the insightful comments

One more thing, vis-a-vis the danseur who wrapped himself so stylishly in the curtain and Jordan's comment that, once you get close to them, curtains have this strange gravity that pulls you in: So I heard from a friend of mine who rides motorbikes very well that, in biking, there's a term for where you're drawn towards the very thing that you wish to avoid once you get quite close to it, and that is "target fixation". The problem is that when you become frightened of colliding with something, it has become a threat, which of course you want to avoid and escape. In order to escape it, your instinctive reaction is to stare at it, to be sure of its exact position... which doesn't help you at all. If your gaze is directed at the hazard, your head is too, and therefore your body also turns in the direction of the hazard, AND SO DOES YOUR BIKE. Motorcyclists get trained to break target fixation by looking away - which is effective but very much easier said than done!

Danseurs have to put up with sweat flinging in their faces during pirouettes too 🤣 In one of our exams at Uni, I ended the fouettés in the fourth position but my back leg just slipped out (obviously my weight placement was too far back) and I ended the routine on my butt. But my arms were still in perfect position. All the examiners had a giggle. I of course, laughed out loud 🤦‍♀️

This was a fun one. I used to do touring shows, and I was told early on that anything that could go wrong probably would, if you ran the production long enough. Unfortunately: True.

I know every dancer has done Snow ❄️ from Nutcracker. I think that’s one of the sketchiest parts: it’s fast, technical and most stage managers love the “blizzard” look. I’m ALWAYS very daring in class and rehearsals: pushing myself to go higher, faster, do extra turns… so I’ve fallen many times. I haven’t (knock on wood) been in a situation when the audience saw my struggle. I did get a black eye during curtain call - my partner accidentally elbowed me in the face. I’m enjoying this video especially when it’s a professional ballerina/couple is the one involved. I actually feel too bad for clear students or pre professionals.

@@balletreign I couldn’t see anything but had to take the bows so they put makeup on my eye and my partner led me out. The most important lesson in all of this is trust is the most important part of a partnership.

My second video with you and I love you. Classical ballet has always captivated me. To me male dancers show the perfection of the male body, power, strength, agility, dignity and grace. And ballerinas, well, how can a woman be so graceful, so softly beautiful, yet show such endurance, strength and control? As a child I took ballet lessons for a few years but had no aptitude.😢 But it gave me a life long appreciation for the dance. Thank you, girls, for these great videos!

Durring 2022 nutcracker season I rolled my ankle in a high arabesque and went down imediatly. My standing leg bent at the knee then my butt landed on the foot I just rolled breaking it from the inpact of being crushed into the floor and my own body while simultaneously dislocating that knee👍🏻 was out for 6 months in a cast, still can't be en pointe till this fall and its been a year since I broke it.

About the props things one time we had a hula hoop on stage because it was supposed to be two kids playing the hula hoop broke and there was water all over the stage. The cleanup crew like 10 minutes before we could start dancing again again.

I totally lost the challenge as well because these videos were hard. We recently did a ballet a couple weeks ago and I had an entrance and saw that there was a prop still on stage and I quickly picked it up before the soloist did her part. Ballet is my life but people who don't dance only see us being graceful, they don't see all the hard work and fails that lead up to a performance. Another thing is that people tend to put ballet dancers on a high pedestal to always be flawless and graceful but tend to forget that we are people too and mistakes are bound to happen.

The ankle thing, I’ve done that, it hurt, but nobody even noticed, then my shoe fell off just before that, I’ve gotten really good at hiding ankle mistakes, only happened once this past year though

Not a ballerina but a social dancer - there was one off day that I elbowed my parter in the face twice in the interval of five minutes 😅😅😅😅 I was absolutely horrified but my partner was a good sport and even applauded me for my aim. Now in retrospect I’m so glad I didn’t give him a nosebleed, he didn’t deserve that

About the prop thing I was dancing the garland waltz from sleeping beauty(it was modified a little bit) and the garland came unraveled, so I had fake flowers in my face for the entire dance and I couldn’t see in my dance teacher, who was sitting in the front row, was so shocked

I will say, I definitely have a love-hate relationship with props while dancing. On one hand, I like having them with me during rehearsal because I can fiddle with them while I'm bored or standing on the side, which is better than the bad habit I usually/used to when I got bored, which was picking at the skin on my fingers. But on the other hand, yeah they can be a hassle/hazard when you're dancing. I remember back at my old studio when we were practicing for snow scene in Nutcracker, we had these snow sticks (which were really just sticks with thick white tape covering them and a giant white pom-pom at the tip) that we used for the dance. For rehearsals, we used normal thin sticks for practice and there were SO MANY TIMES that I accidentally threw them across the studio while dancing. 😅

My own fail was fortunately during the dress rehearsal. I was Persephone in Sylvia and the choreographer had myself and one of the other minor goddesses sitting either side of a set of stairs. During the scene the god had to storm down the stairs and we had to leap up out of the way. I was a minuscule slow and he stepped on the edge of my long dress. The stitch ripped out at least three quarters of the way around. Thank goodness it didn't happen during the performance.

I ended up cringing at most of this video- the combination of my irrational fear of partnering, often being a shorter supporting partner, and the promise of partnering gone awry apparently is a recipe for it XD A quick temperamental prop story: I learned La Esmerelda while dancing at a children's ballet company, so the tambourine I was using was intended for kinderdance and had been with the studio for longer than I had been alive. When I got to the final diagonal, one moment I had a tambourine in my hand, and the next, cymbals were flying everywhere. It completely exploded from me kicking it! Luckily, no one in the room was hurt. Great video! (You should react to even more... if you dare >:D)

Sure! Surprisingly, walking on sand barefoot is a very effective way to strengthen the intrinsic muscles of the feet/ankles bc they have to work to cope with the uneven surface. Time for a trip to the beach! (write it off as a rehabilitation trip 😉😉)

Im posting this here because i can't find the video to post on Pointe shoes are easier en pointe. Trying to do a en flat penche is murder with pointe shoes. Your ankle is wobbling on the shank like a drug addict.
