As you stated in your video, they don't last too long in the wild. This cat was in a particularly dangerous environment with all the predators in the wildlife preserve. However, he did not appear to be one that would lend himself to being socialized and domesticated. It's sad, but we cannot save them all. I noticed, too, he was not neutered, making him more likely to roam and get in trouble.

It was good to hear that you were able to socialize the first cat and find it a home. It would have made you a good indoor cat. That shot where it licked you was social grooming, it had accepted you as kin. Ex feral cats make the best indoor cats.

Excellent, informative and interesting video. Fantastic information. Awesome that you live next to a conservation area with a portal the "wild." We also have the same problem with roof rats, and have discovered that feral cats (in our location) provide effective control. Cats are not entirely "bad" as portrayed by many birders. Thanks for providing your insight. ATB .... Ken

Thanks Ken- yes its a challenging issue there are so many invasive species now in Florida they have evolved to be part of the ecology for better or for worse. Roof rats are imports that displace the smaller native woodrats - they can really multiply in a subtropical wetland/woodland environment.

Very well done video. Having a lot of experience with raccoons, cats and other wildlife, I agree with everything you said here. Feral cats are quite resilient. There are three colonies of them living among the boulders on the Texas City Dike. They raid the tubs at the bait shacks a mile away and eat shrimp, minnows, etc. Those cats live among the granite boulders just a few feet from the Gulf of Mexico's waters edge.

I believe all feral cats came from a domesticated cat that was abandoned by a human and left to fend on it's own. We have an epidemic of them on Hampton, Beach, NH where vacationers come to visit and leave their cats behind. Not knowing how to live in the wild life they do what they can to survive, (which saddens me beyond belief). This generation usually doesn't survive a long time because they're used to domestication but, their offspring survive much better and so forth. Let's spay and nude all our animals. If you have an animal you can't take care of, please don't set it free but, bring it to your nearest shelter to give it a chance for a happy life.

Feral cats are more prone to disease and have shorter lifespans but we must care for them the best we can. I used to think that feral cat hunting with firearms was a good way to control the population but now I believe that the best way to deal with these felines is to give them shelter and food. To those I offended in this comment section I deeply apologize for saying that Feral Cat hunting with military weapons was a good idea.

All domestic cats are born feral and should be socialised with humans within the first 8 weeks of their lives so that they become used to living around us. Cats that aren't socialised with humans stay feral and so are aggressive towards us. Cats domesticated themselves around 8,000 years ago because where there were humans there were rodents on farms for them to hunt. Domestic cats are fully capable of living in the wild.

@@Bruh-kd9rx Ecosystems are suffering because there are way too many cats for it to handle. Cats are an invasive species and the mass of them hunt the animals necessary for ecosystems to thrive. Shelters are also so full of cats that they have to euthanise the ones that aren't adopted. If we stopped neutering cats we'd have to start killing them the same way we do with pests.

I like your video, the night life cameras are fun to watch and your narration is interesting and informative. I don't know if you have local places that do this where you live, but in many Texas cities there is a clinic called Texas Coalition for Animal Protection that spays & neuters feral cats (if you capture them) absolutely free of charge. Once they heal you can release them back to the wild. In these cities feral cats are breeding out of control and spreading leukemia, these clinics receive money from charities so they can help control the problem but also allow the feral animal to continue its natural and wild lifestyle. 👍

Domestic cats originated from the african wildcat. European domestic cats also have an admixture of the european wildcat. All 3 types of cats are basically the same species, but are nonetheless different. Bengal cats are created from breeding domestic cats with the leopard cat, which is of a different genus from domestic cats. This makes me wonder. Does this crazy mixed ancestry help this cat in any way? This one definitely looks healthy and confident.

This was well done. Alot of things stated about feral cats are very true. One of the most valuable things we can do to help the situation is trap vet check , vaccinate, spay or neuter and return them to there outside home and have people that regularly fed and look after them. I need advice: I would like to film our feral cat who has chosen to live out back in our grove. She had stayed for 4 months now. I've fed her everyday for 4 months, even provide her cat treats and catnip. We converted an old big beautiful insulated and shingled dog house into a cat shelter for her with straw. We named her Starlight. She will not approach anyone, she will watch from a distance and then go off into the woods of the Grove, blending in very quickly. I have her feeding station in an Igloo. I would like to ensure she is the one eating the food and using the old dog house. What brand of infrared camera do you have? Is your camera kept indoors or mounted outdoors? Brand of what you film with would be helpful and any advice about keeping the camera safe from the elements. Our feral lives behind our garage, thick cement raised pad with the Igloo and the dog house- made just for her. Behind that is a half acre of woods, a creek is 300 yards east. Im interested to see if any other wildlife (other than birds and squirrels come near). Thanks for any advice.

FYI, I believe the usual term for male raccoons is boar, not bull, and a female is called a sow. We have six indoor/outdoor cats. Mostly spending time outdoor, particularly in summer and especially at night. We frequently have raccoon, opossum, and skunk visitors come around our yard and I have frequently seen all the above species pass within a few feet of each other without incident, merely glancing at each other as if to say oh, there you are, and then going on about their business. I would say it depends on their particular environment and perhaps food availability. The risk to our cats here is the occassional coyote visit to our LA surburban neighborhood.

In Western Australia, Agriculture did the maths and the biggest cost to all farmers was Mice Control. The feral cat problem is actually the feral cat solution for reducing the biggest avoidable costs to agriculture. Vested pecuniary interests (farmers) have infiltrated local government and regional agencies where a direct pecuniary interest is no longer seen as a potentially corrupting influence and a conflict of interest. These days it is all conflicts of interest. The parable of the Dingo, Cat and Mouse was written by agricultural interests who will do anything for their money.

That is so true and so many of our assumptions are made only on what we see in the day....

Possible that one male F1 bengal male cat was dumped and fathered many litters, then those interbred.

***** That's interesting - I've been seeing similar cats in the wild for about three years to the exclusion of other varieties - This one is likely related in some way to last years, too close to be a coincidence. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZOgYKuiy8fGaY0.html

You should take it in. Cats will always hunt but they know where their home is, and who they claimed. you should try and get it closer and closer, maybe some cooked food that has a great smell to it. The cat will eventually sleep in your house for shelter and become its home. My cat never leaves my side. Great video by the way, it made me think that maybe this is what the egyptians did 4,000 years ago.

MyBackyardBirding The guy on "My cat from hell" might be able to help. He's like a cat whisperer. See if you can get in touch with him some how. Im definitely certain he will be interested.
