Minya ochen nraavitca rooskei yazik. Eto nee slozhnei yazik. Eta ochen interesnei yazhik. In order to master any foreign language we have to spend a lot of time to learn and understand it. I enjoy doing this. Some times I feel it is very close to our South Indian language Telugu, though the words are different, all the expressions are same. Many similarities are there.

Ok, this is a super helpful video, because I always saw и used in a weird way when I would try and transition from a graded reader to authentic Russian content on KZfaq that, despite my sentence parsing, I could never get the full meaning of. Спасибо Фёдор.

The usage of " И " in Russian language other than the meaning " and " has been confusing me like hell. And even after watching this video the confusion is not going away. I have to go back and forth on it to keep mastering it and to fully understand the mysterious & varied meanings of " И " Will brobably take few more years to fully understand it....🤔

The "both this and that" usage is similar to Greek, when you say "Και εκείνο, και αυτό" with και = and. There is also an emphatic use of and, as in "Και γαμώ τις ιδέες" (lit. "And fuck the ideas", meaning "(That's a) fucking (great) idea".

Да. Смысл один и тот же. Например, я и не знал = я же не знал. Но оттенок немного другой. Во втором случае это больше звучит как оправдание. Например, я же не знал, что у тебя аллергия на апельсины, извини.

This was interesting. In Duolingo there's a phrase Мы и так ждали кучу времени where the и seems to mean "as it is", again it's emphasis I suppose.

The whole example might be like this. "Could you please wait for another 15 mins? Our manager will be here by that time. - No! "Мы и так ждали кучу времени" - We've been waiting a bunch of time already, so we are not gonna wait anymore". Can you stay in the office for a couple of extra hours today? - Я и так это делаю всю неделю. Так что, не сегодня. Anyway I've been doing it all the last week. So, not today.

Думаю, основная проблема в том, что там очень много игры словами) Конечно, плоховато помню текст, это ж сколько лет назад было) Но тем не менее, помню, как много раз там используется слово "душа", имеющее двойное значение, изза чего многие фразы Чичикова и его собеседников, использующих одно значение ("человек", а конкретнее в их разговорах - "крестьянин") воспринимается совсем иначе, зная второе. И даже название книги - оно же совсем не про сбор Чичиковым мертвых крестьян))) И вот как перевести это на английский? Soul не имеет значения "человек" в английском.

@@JamesListener Насчет души это надо объяснять будет, да и в целом в том то и прикол, интересно посмотреть как иностранцы понимают язык Гоголя. Да и не обязательно брать отрывок именно со словом " душа" у Николая Васильевича есть ещё куча замечательных отрывков: "На подносе сидела такая бездна чайных чашек как птиц на морском берегу" ." .С каждым годом притворялись окна в его доме, наконец остались только два, из которых одно, как уже видел читатель, было заклеено бумагою; с каждым годом уходили из вида более и более главные части хозяйства, и мелкий взгляд его обращался к бумажкам и перышкам, которые он собирал в своей комнате; неуступчивее становился он к покупщикам, которые приезжали забирать у него хозяйственные произведения; покупщики торговались, торговались и наконец бросили его вовсе, сказавши, что это бес, а не человек; сено и хлеб гнили, клади и стоги обращались в чистый навоз, хоть разводи на них капусту, мука в подвалах превратилась в камень, и нужно было ее рубить, к сукнам, холстам и домашним материям страшно было притронуться: они обращались в пыль. I have heard similar things about «же» as an emphasis. Let's say, take the example of «Я и не знал». What changes if I instead said, «Я же не знал»? Is this strange, or just another meaning of some kind?

"Же" In this case would add an emphasis to the fact that you "didn't know it" - it sounds as if someone blames you about something and you are defending yourself/justifying your actions marking that you didn't know some important fact the knowledge of which would prevent you from doing it in the first place

Yes, that's what it means, but this word isn't used nowadays, unless you are jokingly adding grandeur to your speech, making yourself seem like a wise man, or a king, or something.

"воистину и он хороший человек и рабочик" - и goes after он in a "both, and" structure; рабочик is not a word, it should be работник (as in an employee), or рабочий (as in an employee who does manual labour, like building, or welding, or something of that nature). While these two words can sometimes be used interchangeably, they have these implications.

I'll try to explain about homogeneous members of the sentence [I'm not sure it's correct translation, but google reccomends it to me], it's useful in understanding "и"... and, I'm too lazy to check all my mistakes via translator, so exuce me, if you find) In russian "и" can be replaced by a comma (он лежал и думал == он лежал, думал) [but using comma is strange when we talk about 2 words, as for me]. By the way we can do this as long as we want (он лежал, думал, засыпал, ..., ..., etc.). But, we're talking about "и", so where can we insert it? Very important - we need to use a comma between in every case, where are >2 "homogeneous members" [I'm still not sure if this is right term] There are main "situations" to insert "и": 1) between two words 2.1) between >2 words 2.2) before first one and then between ≥2 words Here's the examples: 1) я стираю и готовлю 1.1) я стираю, и готовлю, и убираюсь, и..., и... etc 2) я и стираю, и готовлю, и убираюсь, и ..., и ... etc. How you CANNOT do: 1) я стираю, и готовлю (choose one of two) 2) я стираю и готовлю и убираюсь (you need a comma, but I rarely see someone using commas in messaging so knowing this rule is more a matter of principe and curiosity) Main idea of this rule: If (there are 2 "homogeneous members" [I definitely like it]) -> use "и" OR comma else if (there are ≥2 homogene... [okay, I'll stop]) -> you need to use comma between every two ... [are there any symonims for this? 😅], but you still can use "и" before every word after a comma (except for the first one - you don't need to use comma before it, but "и" is "legal") I hope you understand... uhm *something* and I hope my english can be translated to normal english. Oh, yeah, it works for "или" too. Have fun 🤗 P.S. it's my rule understanding based on what I remember from my exam preparation (it's called ЕГЭ... like SAT, but different a bit). Maybe, it's easier for you to read it from other source ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯ P.P.S. maybe, here already is a video about it - I don't know)
