the fact that SOM part 1 was the favorite game of both my brother and myself. in fact it might have been the best 40 hours of our childhood. we didnt fight and we played the game chapter by chapter enthralled (we even ordered a snes multitap and would sometimes play with another kid too). we went all the way through and beat som1 two more times while waiting for this to come out and it never did. we did get secret of evermore and guess what? it didnt support even two players. it was a wash out nintendo hated us or maybe square enix not sure but i know final fantasy 7 was on a different system and that was a huge game changer. thats what i remember and nintendo only has themselves to thank blame for heartlessly abandoning the players that they supposedly cared about that kept up reading each nintendo power every month. :( :( :( :( :( :(:( :( :( :( :( :(:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(:( :( :( :( :( :(:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(:( :( :( :( :( :(:( :( :( :( :( :(

Right away I was blown away by the graphics and then also the fact that the Character selection seemed unique for most fantasy style RPGs. Really only Duran & Angela fit that regular mold, and Charlotte to a degree but she was at least clearly not all human so that made it also interesting. Then the more and more I played the game via the fan translation the more I was blown away.

I ordered the Japanese version of this game from Japan when it first came out and played it on the Super Nintendo. It was a great experience. I got to the end of the game but never beat it. I didn’t understand the Japanese characters. I made it to the final boss (Dark Prince) with only one class change.

Secret of mana 2 is so good it literally makes me upset that the first game gets all the accolades. Literally destroyed the original in every single way. Put itself up there on the map with Chrono Trigger and Terranigma. INSANELY amazing game. Played this as a kid, Chrono Trigger and Seiken Densetsu 3 are the stuff dreams are made of. Hell you can play these games as an adult for the first time and you'll be blown away by them. Pure magic.

as a kid? it WOULD have maybe done those things... IF it had ever gotten released in english in 1995 or 96 as secret of mana 2. when it was supposed to likely before you were even born. tbh it is better than the first one and not by just a little bit. it is massive (while slightly buggy) the best graphics of the decade not to mention the finest soundtrack and yet was still unknown because the jrpg even in 2012 was STILL NOT getting the respect on north america it deserved. they waited 3 years to bring just final fantasy to north america and then finally last to europe so stick that in your stocking stuffer .. or stiff it in your stocking sticker with santa.. liar claus. and unlike spoiled pig childrens from these days we didnt get to just rip a game onto a computer back then with some fan translation. we simply got STIFFED. this lists along with mother 3 as real snubs. that to this day i say up yours nintendo. well we still cant play dragon quest 11 on a 3ds so lol even now some things simply havent improved for those of us that know jrpg's are the god's chosen genre of gaming.

I think one of the things that kept this series alive for 20 years is the popularity of a certain character in the doujin circles. I would recommend the remake by a significant margin, and this was my favourite SNES game of all time. The dodge mechanic by itself was a game changer, but the quality of life improvements, voice acting (even if the direction is poor, it's there), huge new endgame dungeon, 3rd class change and both the original SNES and modern remix soundtrack being options just make it feel like going back to the original brings nothing but the 16 bit charm.

Another fantastic SNES RPG that I didn't get a chance to play until just recently. I remember hearing about it in Nintendo Power and other video game magazines back in the day, and since Secret of Mana was one of the first RPGs I ever played when it first came out in 1993, I was really excited for the sequel, since the first one had made such an emotional impact on me with the soundtrack, storyline, characters, etc. When it was eventually decided to not bring it to the USA, I was really upset! Well, 2 years ago I found a reproduction English translation cart for sale on Amazon for only $25! I bought it right away, and once it arrived, I popped it in and started a new game file immediately! My 12-year-old son also loves the game, and is really into RPGs, playing EarthBound, Illusion of Gaia, Secret of Mana 2, etc. This is such an amazing game, and truly one of the greatest Super Nintendo games of all time, if not in the top running for one of the best games of all time.

There's a lot of really good stuff in this game, but the combat kills it for me. I like the idea, and it's great not to have to wait nearly as long as Secret of Mana, but your inputs are constantly getting eaten, and enemies can continuously use their abilities, preventing you from healing and taking you from full health to nothing, especially in the later parts of the game. It's a frustrating experience. Soundtrack's fantastic and replayability is high, especially because of the job system, but there are moments when I wanted to throw my controller out of frustration because the game made me feel like I was fighting it to get a word in edgewise.

I hear you! I bought Collection of Mana on the Switch some months ago and played Secret of Mana 2 (Trials of Mana). I thought my version was broken because the battle system seemed unresponsive. I had to read through lots of blogs before one guy explained that this is how it was. Yes, the 0-100% bar from SoM 1 is gone, but they replaced it with an even slower system that still makes you wait, makes any strategy on hitting enemies unresponsive, and the worst: when there are enemies on the screen you are almost forced to take them out because your characters goes into battle mode. I will play this through, but I definitely prefer SoM 1.
@fukngroovnkc3700
@fukngroovnkc3700 2 жыл бұрын
The percentage bar is gone but their is still a critical timing factor in the battle system to figure out like when to attack after being attacked, so that ur inputs aren't getting "eaten"
@SamWeltzin
@SamWeltzin 2 жыл бұрын
@@fukngroovnkc3700 I'm not talking about regular attacks. I'm saying that when certain things happen in this game (typically enemy spells and special attacks), I can't even get into the menu to cast a spell. There's a weird loading time issue in what was originally a cartridge game, and it caused more than one game over because I couldn't heal.
@fukngroovnkc3700
@fukngroovnkc3700 2 жыл бұрын
@@SamWeltzinok so like the loading times in final fantasy anthology "cartridge game" for PS1- that would suck cuz the battle actions are fas I just beat the first boss battle 3 minutes ago & took me a couple times, without loading issues, I got lucky & scored a cartridge
@SamWeltzin
@SamWeltzin 2 жыл бұрын
@@fukngroovnkc3700 I think it's built into the game. I played it on emulator like ten years ago because it wasn't out in the US, and it had very similar issues. Going to guess they tried to get rid of the exploit that was in Secret of Mana, where you can chain spells until you're out of MP, and they went too far trying to "fix" that. I say this having beaten the game. It gets way worse as the game progresses. Whether you let that be a dealbreaker for you or not is up to you. As I said, I like a lot of the rest of the game. But that aspect was really frustrating when I was playing for my Let's Play channel and lost a bunch of progress in the second-to-last dungeon because I literally could not fight back.

*I LIKE* how hard artists were trying to paint the characters with resolution of like three pixels per a detail and a few pixels total for the whole character. Even though nowadays people love pixel art, I guess the artist would also prefer their art scanned in a high resolution (not "AI-improved" blurry mess) for games like this to have it at least in an alternative mode. Though this would require the game to be re-released. I wonder how similar the 3D designs of the re-releases to the original designs.

I never got to play this game on the snes but I did play Secret of Mana, which for many years was one of my favourite games ever. Its not anymore (after playing the remake the combat is so jarring now in 2022). Anyway when I saw the demo of Trials on the ps4 store I was so excited 😊 after playing it I purchased it instantly. I played the game about 5 times and absolute treasure it now and believe it to be one of the best rogs ever, at least one of the best class based rpgs. I Absolutely wish they would do this full remake with all the other mana games like Sword of Mana on the GBA which is classes too from what I remember I don't know if SE truly know how happy it makes UK people to see JP only games localised ❤ By the way I'm 40 so old haha and the remake is ❤❤❤❤❤

I'm surprised you didn't mention the original version being part of the Collection of Mana. I like this but it also has some things I dislike. I like the class change system and being able to allocate stats points again (Final Fantasy Adventure, which was the first Mana game, on Gameboy allowed this while Secret of Mana didn't for some reason) but I didn't like each character being limited to a single weapon type and I didn't like the removal of ranged weapons. I understand them not wanting characters to be able to use any weapon like in the earlier games but IMO it would have been better if they either gave each character both a melee weapon and a ranged weapon or allowed them to use additional weapon types based on what classes they become. The most memorable part for me was the first time I took a second class change. I had Hawkeye as my lead and knew what class I wanted him to become but my Internet was down and not going to be restored for weeks so I only had a vague memory of what I needed to do to make him a Rogue (My favorite common Fantasy RPG class). I made the second change but he became a Nomad so I reloaded my last save worried that I had screwed up at the first class change. I was so relived when taking the dark choice for the second change led to Rogue.
@bizznick444joe7
@bizznick444joe7 Жыл бұрын
In Seiken Densetsu 2 I found all melee weapons absolutely irrelevant only used for hacking away bushes. Ranged weapons were superior in SD2. Because you use a melee weapon and get too close they just stunlock you into oblivion. The very reason I still won't complete SD2 is because of that damn stunlock completely ruins the fun the moment you start fighting the werewolves that corner you then stunlock you until you die. SD3 blew SD2 out of the water having more balance in the way of handling melee. The specific weapon type was specific for their class. Kevin with his fists, Duran with sword, Angela with her magic.

Secret of Mana 2 Greatest in battle system, graphic, music, magics and techs using scene. Fairly great dungeons. But lack of sidequests and any secrets like its name. Everything you can get from seeding in the Inn. Find rare items in secret passage or get from boss or from dungeon or complete quest are more interesting than the seeds. if have some games will better than SoM2, It 's will be Tales of Phantasia , The Most complex dungeons in SNES RPG.

Best rpg of all time to me. You covered pretty much all the points. Best looking game including best animations and best ost of its time. The only non-best part is the story since it's not as involved and complicated due to having multiple story lines. Unfortunately seiken densetsu 4 was a let down imo. Hopefully the future 5th installment will be a great AAA game since we got pretty positive feedbacks from the tom remake.
