No question. When I meet my maker I want Red and Sham to guide me to glory in the afterlife

To the memory and glory of Sham. Homer himself could not have scribed a greater Tragic Hero. His courage to stand and defy the gods at Belmont should inspire even the most cowardly of men.
@monahawk5 жыл бұрын
Sham broke down in the Belmont and never raced or even ran again...I don't know any cowards or anyone else who would be inspired by a horse practically killing himself trying to please his rider who beat the crap out of him with the whip every chance he got. There is nothing about Sham that anyone should aspire to except that he was the only one who gave Secretariat a run a couple of times. Very sad and I think Pancho treated that horse very badly out of greed...I feel bad for Sham who should have been treated with dignity instead of blatant greed...Ron Turcotte said he could hear the beating that Sham was taking and said he felt terrible for that horse getting beaten up like that. Pretty bad when you can hear a beating over the sound of 10's of thousands of people cheering. Sham was abused very badly.

This is really wonderful, and w/new video, I love that lone shot of Himself tearing down track in workout, and Turcotte standing up in saddle after Derby, what a thrill !!

It was as if out of the midst of the Kentucky Blue Grass country this majestic horse arrived on the scene to make us believe in possibilities ago. Run for the love of it, Big Red, run.

You should have also dedicated your video to Secretariat's groomer, Eddie Sweat. I truly believe that Secretariat would have lived longer if Eddie would have stayed with him when he retired at Claiborne. Eddie loved that horse more than his own family!
@monahawk5 жыл бұрын
I think Eddie would have lived longer too...he died fairly young. And Secretariat would have probably lived much longer if they'd kept him on a healthy diet instead of over-feeding him. Laminitis is aggravated by too much weight. I'm glad they are starting to understand that disease and finding ways of treating it but I wish they would have known all of this and been able to treat Secretariat instead of putting him down. Greatest race horse and maybe greatest horse ever.
@LesPaulCustom7913 жыл бұрын
Secretariat the greatest racehorse of all time. Believe it or not Sham ran the 2nd fastest Kentucky Derby ever, coming in 2nd to Big Red. Secreatariat's record time was 1:59.2/5 and Sham was 1:59.4/5. Manarchos winning time was 1:59.97 in 2001. These three horses ran the only sub 2 minute Kentucky Derbys in history.
@monahawk5 жыл бұрын
Just my opinion but the instant that Secretariat crossed the finish line at the Derby the official race time was 1:59 and 2/5ths, not the old record. So Sham beat the old record but finished behind the new record which was set the instant Secretariat shattered the old one. So he beat nothing...poor abused horse. (Pancho was a monster to him)

Thank you so much for posting it. I can watch it over and over again. To me it’s like he still here. I was at the Belmont in 1973 when I was a teenager and I can see it in my memory all the time. Secretary was Pegasus that day. And every other day he was just perfect.

Breaks my heart to see Sham getting whipped so much, especially in the Preakness. Ron Turcott said he would hate to have been that poor horse. Never did hear how his two teeth were broken out. Not nice owners like Big Reds. My gosh, He epitomizes all that is perfection in a horse. Big Red, Ronnie and Penny.... first class.

From everything I’ve read by Nack and others who’ve written about Sham and Secretariat, Sham’s trainer Frank Martin was not well represented in the movie. From everything I read, his personality was way different than what was portrayed. Apparently there was some kind of incident at the starting gate in the Derby where Sham lost his teeth.
@Psyfi85 Жыл бұрын
@@rickbateman2401 Yes, kind of a mystery as to when his teeth got knocked out. Personally think it was during or right after Twice a Princes meltdown in post. Then he gets mugged twice by Navajo coming by stands the first time, Sham had it all, still holds 2nd fastest derby time ever. He just got overshadowed by his great cousin.

Good choice of music. Tchaikosky's 1812 Overture! Well coordinated with the action. I concur about Sham, Kierkegaard73. Great, courageous, heroic horse. Any other year, would've been a triple crown winner himself.

God I hope you're right! They NEED to make a movie about this horse! He's not just another racehorse. I am praying that they make a storyline around Secretariat but use only the actual footage of his wins...so everyone can see his "supernatural" gift that only he possessed...never to be repeated even by humans. Today's generation should be inspired by the mythical greatness of Secretariat's wins...
@majesticbob200716 жыл бұрын
Nice video, and a great horse..the greatest. The final words were so true and wish losing would be that beneficial as it was for Penny. I want to lose like that. Lose a coin flip and end up with Secretarait. You lose yet win..you win the greatest horse of all time.

@12exceller Sham's place in horse racing history is secure, although he didn't win the Derby or Preakness, most would agree he is at least in the category of the 22 horses or so that have won 2 of the 3 TC events. And that is good company indeed.
@Psyfi858 ай бұрын
Yes indeed, he was a gallant warrior and gave his all, literally. Personally consider him one of the greatest ever, he dominated in CA before the Wood and should’ve won there despite jockey error. Forever my black stallion

Red Roses for Secretariat, even then it truly looked like a coronation of a Prince,Ron Turcotte was standing up, raising hat high as if to say, people this is vindication for Wood Memorial, you can throw that one out ! (and as he has said over and over, if only he had known). Acc to new book, Lucien DID tell Sweat and I think Charlie Davis, NOT to tell Ron about the abscess !!!
@bon104217 жыл бұрын
... and notice how the outrider is turning and looking up at Turcotte as he dofts (sp) his cap to the crowd.. it just seems to bestow even more honor, would love to see more extended view of this film!

Kirkegaard73 has the best Secretariat clips. His timing of clip to music is terrific (and I love his 'sidebar' videos for the extra flavor of the moment). I could live without the existential references--Secretariat is '...all alone and impossible to catch..." without pomposity.

He was just a horse, albeit possibly the fastest and most memorable horse that ever lived. But he didn't actually make anything better for the common man.... Emotions, at best.
@bon10425 жыл бұрын
Really, you make me feel so sad, a sense of futility. "just a horse". The common man is doing enough to cause harm, pain and ultimate destruction of all other beings other than humans on this planet. Wildlife, domestic animals, the land, water and air. "emotions at best". Hardly. This magnificent "just an animal" fills me with nourishment for the soul.

I just watched it again and apologize for my previous rudeness. I'm not a fan of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" - (was that Hugo Montenegro?) but the overall piece understood Secretariat's pure and purely transcendent achievement. Thanks for posting it.

@Kierkegaard7317 жыл бұрын
As long as you do not choose Sham as the, "Bad" or the "Ugly", lol, then, as Tolkien would say and I concur with this: Applicability is far better then Allegory, for the latter gives the author domination over the reader(viewer) while the former gives the reader(viewer) control. That being an overly verbose reply I wish to save you from other lunatic thoughts by me, lol, so thank you for your post. I am thrilled you liked my choice of music.
