Magic Johnson's last-second showdown with Larry Bird needs a deep rewind

Game 4 of the 1987 NBA Finals was a crucial juncture in multiple rivalries: the Celtics-Lakers rivalry dating back to the 1950s, and the Magic Johnson vs. Larry Bird rivalry that had captivated fans since their college days.
Down 1 in the closing seconds, the Lakers just needed a bucket and a stop to steal a win at Boston Garden and take a commanding 3-1 series lead. We'll see what happened in their final possession, and the Celtics play that followed, but to really understand those moments we need to go back. We need to understand the options available to the '87 Lakers, including the legendary but aging Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and the increasingly dominant Magic Johnson. We need to understand the Celtics' recent history, including that tragic '86-'87 season.
This is one of the greatest moments in NBA Finals history, and to really understand why, you've gotta rewind.

There's footage of them at a high school or college all star game where they're on the same team, and they play like a symbiotic being. They know where each other are and constantly do no look passes. If they did super teams in the 80s that would've been epic.

Celts wouldve won the 87 finals if it werent for the tragedy. Their biggest problem that year came from depleted bench. Walton going down in YET ANOTHER injury plagued season forced heavy minutes on Mchale. If they had Bias, Mchale definitely wouldn't have had to play through injury since March, and possibily didn't even have the injury in the first place. With Bias in the roster, they'd have more flexibility. I know Mchale was a PF and Bias is more of a perimeter guy, but Bird can play the post too so they could have Bias and Bird play together. That's how they played Cedric Maxwell and Bird together. Cedric was a natural SF, but Bird could guard big man so they had Bird guard the opposing 4 and score inside-outside on the offense. They could've done that with Bias and take the load off Mchale. Just imagine, kevin doesn't play through a broken foot and DOESN'T screw up rest of his career. Not only could they have won 87 finals, but maybe the Celtics dynasty would've lived on.

Yeah it's weird that this video covers Bias, I wasn't expecting this, but just a couple days ago I told a guy at work his story. I thought of him when we heard of a local guy who dabbled in drugs doing some coke and dying by fentanyl. Not that Bias ingested fentanyl in Jan 86, but you can't know what that street drug you're ingesting is cut with, or how your body will react to even the good stuff.

Exactly. And the Bucks too. The east in the 80s had some insane competition. Other than lakers, no team in the west had won more than 60 games in the 80s. But philly did it twice, Milwaukee and Detroit did it once, respectively. I know the numbers say lakers won 5 titles and boston won 3, LA made 9 finals appearance and Boston 5, but I'm all but certain those numbers would've switched if they switched conferences. These two teams were equal in every way.

It's also worth noting that Larry and Magic both knew their championship windows were slipping away, not because of age, not because of Detroit, but a certian young superstar out of Chicago was beginning to take flight towards the top.
@dusk6159
@dusk6159 2 жыл бұрын
? This revisionism Is pure disrespect, the certain young star in Chicago was getting throughly obliterated by Larry (the Lakers were miles away from facing the Bulls in the Finals, what worry?), and the Pistons. He wasn't even in their minds until the next decade hit, he was swept in the First Round and those guys worried about their juggernaut rivalries and age/tear catching up to them, considering we're in the 80s. All the way to the early 90s, until they retired because of that mileage and injuries. This revisionism doesn't even make logical sense.
@dusk6159
@dusk6159 2 жыл бұрын

I loved the fake ending halfway through the video and then giving some time to that last shot by Bird that always looks like it's gonna go in.

Very cool 2 parter moment in history, I think you could do this type of video for Dwight Clark’s catch and the forgotten tackle by Eric Wright on Drew Pearson immediately after

tell the govt that.⚖️. they put massive value on it, talking about multi million dollar/pound/euro seizures and busts.💰. they keep it illegal to keep it expensive, ensuring a never ending revenue stream for the govt🔌, and creating generations of addicts and criminals in the process.🚿. the tentacles of drugs are far reaching, truly a work of satan 👁️
