The scientists likely didn’t know the exact nature of the calamity when it started. It’s possible that they destroyed it themselves when things started going crazy to keep it from getting into enemy hands.

I'm sure the interior we see in the third trailer for Age of Calamity is the Royal Ancient Tech Lab. We see a big room with the same walls as the ruins in Breath of the Wild, it's full of Sheikah tech and there's a lot of books. In Purah's scene we even see a Guardian in the background.

2 theories here, 1) if this happened Post-Calamity, it is most likely as you said, there were guardians there when Ganon awakened and the building was destroyed from the inside. 2) Pre-Calamity, what if the Yiga or even the Fortune teller itself sabotaged the location to force all the Ancient researchers to the one location they were most likely to die? Wouldn't it make sense for an enemy to cover all weaknesses in themselves. Like for instance if Robbie had died, the Ancient Arrows wouldn't have been made, the one thing that can fell a guardian in one hit.

The most interesting part of this is the fact that they had no plans to make Age of Calamity until only recently. What were their original intentions with making such and obviously important site such as a 'Royal Ancient Tech Lab'? Perhaps this is something they were planning on expanding in the next game, or even a scrapped idea for a quest that never made it's way into the full game. More likely it's just another one of those interesting 'What happened here?' things that make BotW so unique.

You need more recognition, I’ve been subscribed for quite a while and i can say you’re never boring to watch: beautiful voice and way of speaking, good editing and theories.

It's funny cause Age of Calamity ended up proving the wiki right. Assuming events played out pretty similarly (ignoring the intervention of a certain egg), Robbie and Purah did end up fleeing from the Royal Ancient Tech Lab during the calamity. AoC also sheds a new light on "the thoroughness of its destruction feels intentional." The Yiga clan was trying to hold Robbie and Purah (as well as several workers) hostage right before the calamity. If the calamity didn't destroy the tech lab, it was definitely the Yiga clan.

my personal theory about this place is that it kept research on guardians and runes until the calamity, and when all the guardians in the lab got corrupted and started to shoot around and trying to kill people the researchers in the facility relized what will happen and decided to blow up the facility, sacrificing themselves in order to stop as much of the guardians as possible. i know its probably not realistic but it's a pretty cool and tragic story and it kinda fits with what we know about the place so... i'll stick with it

I loved the music in the beginning! It feels fresh to have some non-Zelda music! That's not saying that Zelda music is not good, on the contrary, it's great, but it's always good to have some variation!

Somebody else rewinded the intro sequence like 5 times? The way the logo is formed...was very satishfying had to watch it a couple of times.

Your channel is relatively new but your videos keep the same quality as the other older zeldatuber channels, which I find is great Keep it up mate and can't wait for the next one!

One extra detail about the lab I have noticed. Just a bit away from it, you can find a dead guardian that is sitting on top of a puddle of malice, as if it was spilling from it. I don't think that there is anything else like it in all of Hyrule.

It's true that thorize about what happened to every building would be too much, but HELL if I would absolutely LOVE a video of yours talking about metanarrative details of the environment just to wonder. Things like realizing the hole in Temple of Time or the explosion of that building. I just love you making me even think about that.

When I think of the destruction being intentional, I think it was as a last minute effort to prevent the sheikah knowledge being found by the wrong hands (like the yiga). I think the destruction of the lab happened during the Calamity, when the Sheikah heard news that their King had fallen, and so they destroyed everything and maybe even themselves to protect their knowledge

Hey Monster Maze, in the new demo of Age of Calamity, they just revealed what the royal ancient tech lab looks like and it looks amazing. I love your videos and theories, have a day. -me

My theory is that instead of there being one guardian, it started with just one. It had done enough damage to the lab to need repairs, but as stated in Robbie's journal it isn't hard to deal with only one if you have studied them. SO, that leads to my theory that a burst of guardians started attacking while construction was happening and that's why they headed there for the mission. The burst of guardians got the remainder and forced the hylians to abandon it, which also explains the remaining wooden floor. Wouldn't that be destroyed too? It'd be easily destroyed by the first guardian, but the construction had placed most of the floor back, that was just a bit that survived from this burst of guardians. This wouldn't line up with Link being appointed to the Royal Guard though, would it? Well, it would. Perhaps he was appointed before they were able to find out how to deal with guardians, and thus Link's kill was a lot more of an accomplishment than after. Of course as i'm posting this age of calamity is out so people likely know what happened, but since I don't know, this my theory.

I feel like to me the most obvious answer is probably they did it intentionally. I think it's possible that they were attacked en masse by the Yiga maybe shortly before the calamity and had to destroy the lab along with most of the research just so it didn't fall into their hands. It might not fit with how we've seen the Yiga...they seem a bit more of the warrior types than the Sheikah but they were both one people at some point so it stands to reason that there have to be some inventor/researcher types amidst the Yiga. Just imagine how deadly they would have been if they had been able to weaponize the guardian stuff like Robbie did. My other thought is maybe it was another party who is allied with Ganon who likewise desired the research but perhaps they were completely defeated or simply moved on after Ganon 'conquered' Hyrule because they were mercenary types or something.

Guardians gone rogue... sounds about right to me! Though, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't the same one that Link blew it up. I got the feeling that several of them went rogue beforehand, even before the AoC gameplay. Anyway, great video!

So since the demo came out the second levels name has been driving me crazy because it calls it the hateno tech lab which is obviously on the other side of the map. In your video it shows it being called the royal tech lab, which makes so much more sense. I know that’s not the point of your video, but I’m so happy now knowing it must have been crappy translators that got the name wrong not the actual game. Anyway this was a great video!

2:55 I'm confused. I was quite sure that at least in either Robbie or Purah's diaries it mentioned them returning to the ancient tech lab to retrieve the guidance stone there.

another awesome vid as usual i have my own theory it could be ganon was afraid of them coming up with some ancient weapon to defeat the guardians or even him thats why at the calamity he "intentionally" destroyed it it would also explain why it was so thorough unlike the other ruins which had at least one wall standing

My first thought when hearing the excerpt from ‘Creating a Champion’ is that the ancient tech lab could have held some important information, so Gannon wanted to make sure that it was completely destroyed. But I like your theory better and they’re possibly both true, and Gannon gained control of that guardian in order to hinder guardian research.

I really enjoyed this video! After reading Purah's diary a while back, I hoped we might get to see some of these scenes re-enacted and Age of Calamity will really shed some light on things! Honestly, your final theory involving the strange new character (fortune teller?) might be the reason behind the guardians bein corrupted pre-calamity. Do you think if they brought back Koroks there might be additional memories or diary excerpts to find in this game as well? 👀

I think Robbie and/or Purah decided to blow up the lab to make sure their research won't fall into the hand of the Yiga Clan. The place became vulnerable, so they destroyed it and moved to Huryle Castle.

Hands down, in my opinion, you're the best Zelda theorist. Your videos are top-notch quality in every aspect! (I especially enjoy the gorgeous HD footage!) By the way, love the new intro. Very slick animation 👌 I'd love to see you go more into the symbolism of BotW/Zelda lore as a whole. Color theory in particular! There must be a reason why purple is always associated with monsters. And where did monsters come from anyway? Below the earth? A parallel dimension? All life forms are said to inherently have life force (the same golden substance the Triforce is made out of), so have monsters too? Were they part of the creation of the Golden Goddesses? Did Farore intend them as just another (primitive) lifeform, not inherently evil? Or did Din sneak in a creation of her own when forming the land (because monsters=affinity for strength)? Or were they all human/Hylian originally, only corrupted and warped by greed into these evil, base creatures? Or would those humans/Hylians become demons and not monsters? Is there a difference and what difference is it? We know from Batreaux in Skyloft that demons need gratitude crystals (a form of excess life force) to become human. Does that mean demons are born without life force? Is that why Demise and all demons greed for it? And where did Demise come from? Was he human once and only acquired enough life force to be called a God or was he born one? Was he created by Din, as her champion of strength? Did Nayru create Hylia? Did Farore create the spirit of Link? Did the Golden Goddesses actually leave behind Hylia or ARE they Hylia? Are they only concepts/virtues which separated at creation and then reformed as Hylia? If so, why does Zelda as Hylia's reincarnation only (primarily) have an affinity for wisdom and not power and courage as well? And asking about symbolism and numbers, what's up with the varying principal numbers? We have 3 Golden Goddesses, but 5 (known) gods in total with Hylia and Demise. Hylia and Demise appear to represent an opposing duality: good/evil, light/dark, love/greed, female/male, whereas the Golden Goddesses a triality. We also have a confusing number of "elements" which vary in affinity and occurrence. Fire, water, ice, earth, air/wind, electricity, darkness/shadow, light and spirit, depending on the game. --- Note here, that the element earth in FS, FSA and Minish Cap is the color purple, which corroborates my earlier remark about the connection between monsters, purple and them coming from below ground/inside the earth with Demise (!) Were they sealed there by Hylia or do demons originate from there? And speaking of Hylia ... Hylia is said to have created Hylians but technically in OoT it says Farore created all life on earth? So what da heck? Also there's that line in OoT about the pointy ears being there because Hylians can hear the gods ... sooo does that mean humans can turn into Hylians if close enough to the presence of Hylia or the Golden Goddesses? In other words, why do humans AND Hylians both exist anyway? Were humans NOT created by Farore and instead some Hylians survived Demise on the ground and because they were cut off from Hylia/Zelda above the clouds their ears turned round? Are they the original Gerudo and that is why their and Ganondorf's ears are round? How does Groose fit into all this as possible ancestor of Ganondorf? In OoT we had three races representing the Golden Goddesses, Goron/Zora/Kokiri plus Gerudo on the side/as bad guys. In BotW we have four main/important/divine beast key races Goron/Zora/Gerudo and now too Rito. Goron for Din/strength, Zora for Nayru/wisdom, but both Gerudo and Rito could qualify for Farore/courage, considering they represent the element electricity and wind who canonically (also in the color green) are associated with Farore. But then again, Rito are said to have evolved from Zora and have an affinity for ice so they could also qualify for Nayru. It's hella confusing ... And lastly, when BotW came out and we saw all those references and contradicting evidence (making a definitive timeline placement impossible), my first thought was "OMG, there is a Zelda game where multiple timelines mixed in a chaotic clash of time and space. The original Hyrule Warriors !!!" AND WOULDN'T YOU KNOW ... which game is now promising to give us more background story on BotW? ANOTHER Hyrule Warriors !!! I'd bet every last rupee that BotW was inspired by the story of the original Hyrule Warriors. I'd not even be surprised if Cia/Lana were mentioned or part of the coming game or even BotW 2 ... She could even be famous fortune teller. She/they would definitely be someone the king listens to. Just a theory. A game theory. 🤪 PS: If you do a video on any of the things I said and use some of my input, I'd love a shout-out ❤️️

It’s possible that when Calamity ganon took control of the guardians at Hyrule castle, the researchers at the royal ancient tech lab deliberately destroyed it so that the technology being stored they’re couldn’t be corrupted as well. Also if a guardian did go rogue it’s possible it has something to do with the mystery character we see in the latest Yiga clan trailer. They appear to be in possession of some corrupted shiekah tech so maybe they could corrupt a guardian as well?

Wow, I'm impressed to see you actually double-check your research, I feel like many of theory and speculation videos just run right through and can often lead to wild claims. Great video, I love all the different theories you present.

My interpretation of that last line in Creating a Champion was that research was destroyed to prevent Ganon from getting even more powerful, because as we see in Purah’s lab, there was a fish-like-guardian contraption, meaning that other devices could have been produced at the lab that could’ve been powerful and dangerous in the wrong hands. Who knows how much greater the devastation of Hyrule would have been if Ganon’s forces/fortune teller/spies got their hands on that research.

I had another interesting theory. Remember how the Skeikah were exiled, well, what if that was a base of operations for them all the way back then, and when they were exiled, it was completely demolished and that’s why the fact that nothing remained was purposeful. If so, then it should have seemed older, but what if the King overrode that when they needed the Skeikah again, and started to rebuild it, but before it was finished, the calamity struck and it was destroyed again, leaving only a wall and window or two. Then, maybe the mission was to go and help rebuild it, kinda like Tarry Town, but more hands on. Also, it is possible that this theory and your last one are both true, and instead of the Calamity that destroyed the construction, it was a rogue guardian.

The theory I had way back when I first played was that it was destroyed intentionally, but by the Sheikah rather than Hylians. My thoughts at the time were when the Calamity began and the guardians went rogue, the researchers set the lab to blow so that their research/whatever guardians they were working on at the time wouldn't be taken by the Yiga or Ganon during their retreat. I can't imagine that they could bring all of their ancient tech with them so I imagined it would have been a case of "it's better that no one has it than the risk of it falling to Ganon." Guardians do explode when they're defeated so imagine what several incomplete guardians could do when they were set to intentionally blow apart by the geniuses that were working on them. It could also have had the benefit of taking out any nearby guardians that were making an assault on the lab and covering their theoretical retreat

Love the idea the fortune teller test-hacked the guardian at the tech lab. this one is very much unlikely, but I'd love the scenario where the lab was destroyed intentionally by resarchers during the calamity, to prevent counterintelligence. Prevent what counterintelligence? The fortune teller getting her hands on the information of the shrine of resurrection- where Link will be protected. Of course this doesnt make sende chronologically because the lab must have been demolished well before Link fell. But it will be so awesome if some war of intelligence is involved in the scenario, since the fortune teller already seems to have undermined the kingdom this way.

I think you're on the right track with the rogue Guardian that destroyed the lab from within and booked it. And as you pointed out: apparently HWAOC gameplay covers this very topic and theory!

The building blowing up from the inside and taking out a couple of Guardians could be a reference to Barne's bomb storage shed in Twilight Princess, which Link blows up feom inside (by accident) while hunting for Tears of Light in Kakariko Village.

From the moment you highlighted that paragraph in Creating a Champion my mind immediately jumped to "sabotage by the new villain". Glad that's where you ended up too. Guess it wasn't a far fetched thought then.

Ok, I know this is an older vid, but it could be this: Research starts at the royal tech lab, as research progresses, it is deamed to small to continue there, research restarts at the castle, calamity begins, tech lab is demolished to prevent ganon or the yiga from learning what the skeika discovered.

1st: Love the refreshed intro 2nd: Just a suggestion, but maybe the “probably fortune teller” may be testing her malice with Ancient cores cause that’s what powers the guardians... maybe that’s what she is tinkering around with in the scene with Kohga and that blade master? Yeah with the reveal of that new villain it makes a lot more sense that they are the reason for a lot of the pre calamity malfunctions and incidents surrounding ancient tech. It’s obvious they can corrupt an ancient core pre calamity so it may be that they are testing their masters plan to take over the ancient tech and making sure everything will go smoothly upon his return. It always felt weird to imply that ganon was responsible for some of these more specific incidents involving guardians. It’s my belief that he only ever directly corrupted tech on the day of the calamity. This new villain can now explain some of the inconsistencies with more minor incidents before ganon was awakened

I'm with you bon this one, when I saw that trailer and a corrupt guardian coming out of nowhere before the calamity really left me with a lot of questions, with that translation this would make a lot more sense, Love your videos as always! Never stop what you do!

The first thought I had, if Ganon could control the Guardians somewhat directly during the Calamity, he could also have directed a group of them to specifically target the tech lab and destroy every bit of research material to make sure nobody could use that information against him. At the end of the day, in the events of BotW, research of on the guardians didn't really progress particularly far from what we see in the trailers of AoC. I imagine that if Purah and Robbie had access to all of that information, they might have developed more advanced measures against the Guardians in the 100 years of time they had until Link woke back up.

Maybe when the Calamity showed up and they realized they'll have to leave the place, they blew up intentionally the lab. They took as much as they could take and blew up the lab to prevent any information to get in the hands of anyone ? Sounds a bit weird/ farfetched I know but... Maybe ? Who knows ^^' That would prevent any crucial information from getting in the hand of Yigas... Even though it was already too late. In fact, I think the new character shown in the trailer is probably the Fortune teller or some sort of traitor so he could gather information and even could've stole the Ancient Core, trying to corrupt it and sabotage guardians. So yeah ^^' (rude ending I know I'm not really good at ending sentences haha ! But it was a really interesting video as always !

I'd like to think that Purah and Robbie were close to figuring out the truth about the ancient Sheikah tech (that the energy came from malice, and therefore posed as a possible threat instead of an aid), so Ganon purposefully made sure the guardians left nothing, no single scrap of paper, there so that no one could figure out the truth. Because if the Hylians knew the truth, they could use it against him. I doubt it's a new theory, but it's definitely one that makes sense.

I liked your last threoy alot. I also notice that the garudian has a leg broken off maybe a couple went crazy and shot each other and blew up. Or something like that inside the tech lab.

Great video as always! But on another note, something in this video made me realize I may have found a way to begin translating era of the wild hylian. And I could use that for a little something found in a recent trailer. I’m being vague on purpose because the idea of being the first to figure this out is exhilarating. But if you can figure it out and make a video yourself before I can kudos to you. I would be happy if you out of any of the other Zelda tubers were able to beat me to it. You’re my favorite! 😁

I always got the impression that the lab was destroyed after the calamity either by the Yiga or maybe some guardians. I've always assumed it was because Ganon didn't want all of that research on the guardians and divine beasts being available to anyone who might figure out a way to regain control of them.

The memory with Link and Zelda and the frog is really close to the tech tab and you can actually in game see a path that leads directly to the ruins of the lab from around where that memory is so I feel like the lab probably wasn’t destroyed at least until later because they wouldn’t really have a reason to be there otherwise.

Awesome video, as always! Speaking of ruins, has anyone else noticed that there are some ruins below the water in Lake Akkala near the Torrin Wetlands? They look the same as all the rest of the ruins that were destroyed in the Calamity. I wonder how they got flooded? Maybe Lake Akkala didn’t used to be a lake, and it was just flooded over time over the past 100 years due to rain fall? The wetlands do flood during the rain. Anyways, these are just my thoughts!

The fact that it was destroyed pre-calamity is highly likel since it cannot be seen at all during memory #7 on Irch Hill. Looking at the map shows that the camera points in the direction of the lab.

I'm not knowledgeable enough in Japanese to say for certain what that sentence meant (and yes I know we're post-release) but I think it meant "Either Link, Zelda, or Impa routs" - as in "to rout," a term often used in the Fire Emblem games as far as pop culture usage goes (as a win condition no less, "rout the enemy") which essentially boils down to a hasty retreat - or more simply, total defeat. Usually in Warriors games, the win and lose conditions are displayed immediately next to each other, often the win atop the lose. In short: one letter makes all the difference.

I like the "malfunctioning" guardian theory, but I think the lab was emptied and destroyed by the Sheikah at the lab once they realized what was happening during the Calamity. They surely would have known it would be attacked at some point, and I'm sure they wouldn't want anything left behind that could be corrupted to add to the Calamity's power, or to fall into the hands of the Yiga. Also, the equipment that was there could have been the basis for what was used to created Purah and Robbie's current labs.

I always felt the expolded house was simple. Guy or gal in the house was a bomb or explosives manufacturer or dealer and the house was a shop or warehouse. Guardians came to pay a visit to the place and the person inside decided decided to go out on their own terms with a giant middle finger shaped mushroom cloud in the bargain. Or it was an explosives warehouse and when the Guardian shot it went boom. Same effect but take your pick on version you like.

Either: 1. The Sheikah themselves destroyed everything to keep it from falling into enemy hands. OR 2. Ganon deliberately targeted the facility to takeout Hyrule’s R&D labs so that they would lose the knowledge and couldn’t develop countermeasures against ancient tech or find a way to take it over from Ganon like he did to them.

I agree with the new mysterious person having a role in these corrupted guardians. When I saw the trailer and saw the corrupted orb, that was the first thing I thought of.

I was sure I read in Robbie's journal that he removed a Guidance Stone from the Royal Ancient Tech Lab and took it to his own Tech Lab in Akkala, shortly after the Champions had failed. And Purah removed the 2nd Guidance Stone from Kakariko village and took itto her Hateno Tech Lab. So both Guidance Stones used to be in different locations. Perhaps there is a 3rd Guidance Stone just like there are 3 pieces of the Tri Force. Perhaps this 3rd Guidance Stone is in the possession of the evil Gerudo Witch we see in the new AoC trailer.

In the Silent Princess memory, there are plenty of shots that look towards where the lab should be, but it's not there. And if you look closely, you can see a bit of the ruins there, so I always thought it was just already destroyed pre-Calamity. That may have just been an oversight by the devs, or perhaps that last theory is close to what happened and it got destroyed during the events of AoC, but before that memory took place

Since Yigi clan are pretty stealthy and are masters of disguise, the mysterious figure dispatches the two Yigi clan members to take the corrupted core to the lab. They infiltrate the lab, swap out the core which causes the guardian to destroy the lab... which leads into the scene that we see inside the trailer. 😁

They didn't move to the castle thats just where they set up the research base when the first Divine Beast was rediscovered before the second attack of Ganon.
