She’s by no means a bad character. She’s just been stuck in a role where she’s helpless to be an active participant in the plot, when she does appear. Even in KH3 all we see her do is watch the sunset with Axel, lose fights or deus ex machina a redo. We need to see Kairi not fail the Beckdel Test, or as least the spirit of the test since a literal interpretation could be passed by having two women spend a scene talking about shoes. Kairi needs to be seen kicking ass and taking names. After all the time she’s spent as damsel in distress, and a high profile character in the series, it’s the least she deserves.

She didn’t even end up at the Destiny Islands under her own agency, she was led there by the spell Aqua cast on her necklace. Sora, Riku, Roxas, Xion, Ventus, Terra and Aqua, they’ve all seen their determined fates and fought for their own future. Riku reconciled the darkness within himself. Roxas came to peace with his relationship with Sora knowing he wouldn’t be forgotten. Xion threw herself on Roxas’s blade to stymie Xemnas. Ventus actively fought reunion with Vanitas at the cost of his own heart. Terra fought from within his stolen body for twelve years against Master Xehanort. Aqua survived the Realm of Darkness armed with only the Master’s Defender, a single shotlock an a handful of spells, against her own reflection, Darksides, demontides etc.

He absolutely could have given her the opportunity to fight and make a difference, but he just turned her into a damsel in distress all over again. She was kidnapped in literally every single main title game. Sure, the first two times happened when she wasn't a capable fighter, but she spent the ENTIRETY of the third game training...only to get easily snatched and taken again. Just to drive Sora to fight to save her. What a compelling character.
