Improving your listening skills is vital if you want to be competent in the English language. In this lesson, you're going to learn how to improve this area in the most efficient and rapid way possible!

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR LISTENING SKILLS:
Native speakers don't understand everything they hear. It's true.
I sometimes find it difficult to understand:
- when on the phone
- when talking to people with accents I'm not used to
- when watching movies
- and when listening to music
This is going to happen to you. You'll never reach a stage where you understand everything.
But it's important to improve so that you can understand more. Here is how:
1. Improve your vocabulary and grammar: the more you know, the more you'll understand. Search for "input To Fluency" to learn how to do this.
2. Listen as much as possible: get used to the way people speak. You can listen while doing other things.
3. What you listen to is important: find audio that is enjoyable, specific to you, and comprehensible. I recommend audiobooks that have been adapted for English learners (graded readers)
4. Work on your pronunciation: if you can make the sounds in English, you'll better understand them when you hear them.
5. Have natural conversations: this is the best type of listening practice but it's more expensive and harder to find.
I encourage you to try these methods. Start today. Commit to doing more in English. Enjoy the journey.
Hope you enjoyed this! Please subscribe if you're new!

according to British English, I would love to listen to BBC podcasts, they have a lot of programs such as English 1 minutes for the beginner, the English we speak or English 6 minutes, etc. I feel like the pronunciation of the British is super charming, I really love it. speaking of American English, I usually listen to Rachel's English, she analysis very clearly how the native speaker says in reality. I think my level is pre-intermediate and now most of the time I focus on speaking skills. Thank you for reading.

For me a really good exercise to improve all the skills at the same time is "transcription". Just take and audio as for example the one of this video and write all what the speaker says and then speak aloud at the same time that you are reading what you typed. It is a really good process to internalize the language.

Thanks for the interesting video and, most of all, for something that really felt "eye-opening" for me, when you say that even you native speakers can find it so difficult to understand movies or music. I got a C2 Proficiency level many years ago, but listening has often been frustrating for me. If not in conversations or watching videos, surely when watching some movies (where I istinctively turn up the volume to understand and sometimes with no benefit...) or listening to songs, where I have to pay attention to get the lyrics, and also in this case not always successfully. Always telling myself in frustration "you are a C2 level, you are supposed to understand everything!"... So thank you for the suggestions to improve, but also for this "little secret"... that no native speaker had never told me before!

Last year I didn't understand almost anything , so this year , 20 January I guess I stated watching videos in English every day from 6 PM to 11:30 PM , and it's helped a lot with my listening and my pronunciation , sometimes I can't get across what I feel, it's crazy for me to understand 95% native English Speaker , I studied American English, but I prefer British one . But sometimes when I am speaking it seems like I can't find the right words . But I will improve my English

Thank you for the outstanding and informative video lesson. My level? I could understand every word you said except for the "graded reader," that I'll look up in the dictionary. I could even follow you without missing a word at 1,75 speed. Every day, driving to work for about 40 minutes, I tune my car radio on BBCWorld News, and I basically get the meaning of every topic. I sometimes struggle with some weird accents, as when I try to follow conversations between Irish and Scottish people (pilots, crew members, etc.). I work at Ryanair Training Center in Milano (Orio al Serio) airport; such conversations are quite frequent.

If it comes to alter what helps me the most I would definitely say that podcasts (especially BBC English, TED), youtube channels (like yours, Papa Teach Me, ETJ English, Learn English With TV Series) but as well reading books and then listening to the ones I read, watching movies and TV series (rly vital to start with the level you are able to understand and then one step at a time enhance the level of difficulty). Nevertheless, this is not going to help if you do not work consistently. Consistency is a key to learn anything. Do not ever dare to give up, since it is going to be just worse.

I think this is the kind of videos I was looking for, I almost understood everything you're saying and that was really great. Personally, I love improving my listing skills through "GAMING" beside watching movies.

If there was an agency which could announce to the English world to speak as clear as you do, then all problems with listening would be solved at once.

Excellent tips. For instance, listen to English on the radio is the most difficult task for me, as well as some phrasal verbs that the only way to study is by heart. Thanks for the video.

My level is somewhat between a B1 and a B2 level in English. My currently approach in order to improve my language includes watching tv and listening as much as I can in my target language English.I listened to the whole Harry Potter series and as I finished I started to listen to them again.I read HP1 and now I extending my English universe to other fields and topics. I watch Scrubs,How I met your mother,Malcolm and other stories where I‘m familiar with. The more I hear the more it feels naturally .Every video I watch is in English it doesn’t matter what ,my native language German is dead at least in terms of media consumption.Unfortunately it doesn’t help me with my speaking skills, therefore they‘re terrible.

Personally, I always use audible to listen to self-help books. It was due to my motivation to improve myself and my life. Conveniently, these books are written in English, so I can improve my English and life at the same time 🥰
