The whole point of pre germination is to save water. Just soak the seeds for 24 hours in a bucket. Let them dry and spread it on your lawn. Just by soaking for 24 hours you'll shave off a few days of watering until germinatiton.

My first thought would be (The Injurycomp Method) using rainwater for 2-3 days (or perhaps well water) instead of chlorinated city water. Hi Sam ! You are so funny 😁 I really loved your video, especially when you were trying to open the seed bag....Your experiments are very interesting. Did you scarify and prepare the area before putting the seed? One thing lawn care has taught me is to be patient...Tall fescue that I planted in October germinated in 7-10 days. Now I have a perfect green carpet. I don't know how it will hold up during the summer heat... it remains to be seen... I read that tall fescue is the most heat resilient of cool season grasses. I am very interested in seeing your results in a next video.
@SamsLawn
@SamsLawn Ай бұрын
Hi Lucy, I should really edit the videos more so I look smart instead of that 😂 For sure, I scarified, aerated, I did it during my full lawn renovation so I think it had a good bed to germinate. Sadly our temps dropped today and tomorrow we might even get frost. So, that´s Sweden for you, hopefully some of it lives. Tall fescue should be the most heat resilient but that´s the same as saying some species are shade tolerant, doesn´t mean they don´t need any sun at all. So tall fescue will cope with heat to a point, but after that it will start to struggle same as all cool season grasses. But I think you will be fine, wish I could see a picture of the tall fescue, we don´t have that much of it over here :)

@SamsLawn
@SamsLawn 27 күн бұрын
Hey mate, well if you are seeding larger areas and need more seed, then this works better for that. If I had smaller patches then I would just mix seeds with soil in a bucket or wheelbarrow. It was way easier to mix it when it pre-germinated in soil. That actually made me think that I could have just mixed the pre-germinated seeds in a wheel barrow with soil and spread it that way. That would maybe be better than using sand.

Hi Sam. I enjoyed the video. I live in the northeast in the US and I have tried the pre germination for the firs time this spring. I have had some success and also some failure with it. One bag I did had the same issue you had in your video where it germinated too much and clumped together. I ended up just letting the seed dry on a tarp and hand spread that batch and raked it the best I could. How is your lawn turning out so far? Chris
@SamsLawn
@SamsLawn 27 күн бұрын
Hey Chris, same for me. The pre-germination it self worked just fine, a little too good, but as you say, if there isn´t a more optimal way of spreading the seeds without it clumping together then this might just be more hassle to be honest. It´s been almost 2 weeks now since I did it and the seeds germinated on the lawn but you can see that it did it in patches, so it seems even with the sand it still clumped together. I think next time I might try to mix it with top soil and use the landzie to spread it, maybe that will spread more evenly. How has your turned out?
@chrisryan8863
@chrisryan8863 27 күн бұрын
@@SamsLawn Hey Sam. Mine is starting to turn out pretty well. Being patient is the key, and like you, I am not as patient as I need to be with my grass germination projects. I have told my family too many times through the years to stay off the lawn that it can defeat part of the purpose of having one! What I had to do is repeart he pre germination process a few times and I put the seeds down earlier and then (even my hand in thin spots) and then covered it with potting soil. I like using potting soil that is organic and it is doesn't cost much. It covers the seed well but doesn't weight it down like plain soil does. But it helps the seed to have contact with soil and germinates quicker. If I do a larger area again I will use my Landzie and put the seed either in peat moss or a very dry soil or compost like you mentioned. I think that will help. One of your viewers also mentioned he used granulated lime to mix and his seed and spread it. That is probably cheaper than Millorganite but if your soil doesn't need the lime you wouldn't want too much of that on the lawn either.

I did this for perennial rye grass and had germination 4 days and had to put it down by day 6. I like your honesty. My roots ended it up tangling too and couldn’t use the fert cart to spread it and had to mix dry soil and fertilizer and threw it by hand for an 1,000 sqft area.

Yeah, I really need to find a better way of spreading the seeds, it started germinating fast, but it´s germinating now in patches on the lawn, I guess from the seeds clumping together. So I really liked the faster germination part but if I can´t find a more optimal way of spreading it it is more of a hassle than just seeding normally unfortunately. Hope you had better luck with that part mate. Thanks for dropping by, appreciate it.

Expensive if you want loads, but for this purpose a couple of bags is perfect. You talking about the water in the bucket with the seed? Doesn't that create toxic water that will kill your grass
@CMDRSloma
@CMDRSloma 29 күн бұрын
@@The_k1d206Toxic? No, it is all natural, there is nothing toxic there, it's all plant material and bacteria, etc. What you want is microbial life in the soil, so your grass or whatever you are growing is going to have food. Microbial life eats that which cannot be absorbed by plants and breaks it down into compounds and elements that can be absorbed by plants. This is soil life, nothing is toxic here. For example, your synthetic fertilizer contains only what manufacturer put in it is ready to be absorbed by plants. Soil biology beat anything that humans invented so far, bacteria, bugs, earthworms, mycorrhizal fungi they need food and this water is their food but in return this whole ecosystem will provide for plants. This is why while organic might not be powerful injection of nutrients compared to synthetic, it is wholesome. Feed the soil, not the plants, and the soil will provide. I don't use synthetic any more, I use sieved homemade compost to make compost teas and liquid seaweed and my lawn and the rest of the garden is lush and green.

So from what I have read, the "toxic" referred to is not really anything toxic in that sense. It´s natural stuff coming out of the seeds when germinating to "warn" off other plants nearby to kind of stay away. It´s a natural defence mechanism when grass seeds germinate. So it is toxic but natural toxicity so to say :) That´s how I understood it at least.

haha, du kan bara skylla på mig, säg att jag tvingade dig ;) Jo men tvättpåsar kan nog funka, så länge de håller fröna inne och vattnet ute så ska det inte vara några problem.

Helpful video, but you should make a youtube "short" of you just carrying the wheeled spreader and turning the wheel, LOL! Title it "how to spread grass seed" and let the lulz roll in 😂😂😂

hahahaha I really should do that! Would be hilarious! How to make your own hand held spreader 😂😂😂😂

I feel like pre-germinating is not a good idea. If u dry out the seed in the sun, u are killing and decreasing germination. Also, u lose more germination if u let it sprout too soon or if u have work and can’t spread it immediately. I think it’s easier to just seed like normal
@FixItWithMe

Plus, everyone has trouble spreading it. The amount of $$ u need to spend on Milirgonate to spread a large amount of seed isn’t worth it. Pre-germinating is just good for seeding same spots in the spring in my opinion

Hey Mate, I do agree with you that it was a bigger hassle to spread it than I imagined it would be and as you say I didn´t want to dry it out too much. So not sure if it´s just better to seed normally. I think I will definitely try it out again and try some other methods of spreading it, but in the end if it´s always this much work then maybe I just seed normally.

@Nan_cc I never pre-germ, but if I did, I would definitely spread it with Milorganite because it's something I've always used with my normal seeding. Seems like a water saving to me.

I had the same problem, spreading the seeds when moist I tried with an organic fertiliser and mixing it all together, but the fertiliser started dissolving with the moisture the best solution I ended up finding was mixing the seeds with compost and spreading the whole thing over the lawn This obviously meant that I was not able to use a spreader of any kind and had to do it by hand, but in the end, it has worked out well

@@CaptnT0ast Awesome feedback mate, I think I will use a compost spreader next time and just mix the seed with some soil or something.

Pre germination is too problemmatic. That’s why the professionals spread it dry for a reason. Patience is a virtue

yeah, I will try it some more times, If I cannot find a more optimal way of spreading the seeds then I would say the normal dry way is just less hassle in the end.
