"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

My dad was born on a farm in Minnesota in 1933. He moved my mom out here to So Cal in the 60's for work and was a lifelong Republican. We had strawberry fields and orange groves here in the 80's when I was a kid. I'll never forget when we were driving on the freeway and he pointed to the immigrants working in the fields. By then my dad was a very successful VP. He said, "Do you see those people? Those are the hardest working people in the country. You should aspire to be like them." He would repeat that throughout his life: "These clowns (politicians) blame immigrants for ruining the economy. *Hardly*!" 😂 I miss my dad!!

There is plenty of substance to offer Jon chose not to show it. You really think millions of illegal migrants just walking into the country has no consequence? Pretty much every major city is cutting services due to lack of funds and now they are burdened with illegal immigrants and have to pay for their housing, food, healthcare, schooling for their children. Not only that, we are also on the hook for providing them with low income housing for which American citizens have been on waiting lists for years but these illegals are now in front of the line. If you love them so much move them into your own house.

There's another point to make on the "jobs theft".... The undocumented immigrant would not be able to undercut the American citizen's wages without the "born in America" EMPLOYER looking specifically for undocumented labour because THEY are looking to reduce their cost and increase THEIR profit. This is the RICHEST country in the world, and we have the resources to help these immigrants as well as the homeless citizens of this country. AND pay a living wage. Just stop sending money to Israel and cut our military budget for God's sake. The money is there, our government's priorities are messed up.

Australia had a similar issue with "illegal immigration" which was called "irregular maritime arrivals" because the asylum seekers arrived by boat (mainly by the Indian Ocean and Timor Sea to the West and North of Australia). After 2001, the conservatives implemented a tough policy which reduced the boats to zero, so was viewed as better on the issue. When the progressive Labor government was elected in 2007, that policy was dismantled and as a result, 50,000 asylum seekers came by boat, and over 1000 people drowned at sea and Labor had to progressively reintroduce the conservatives' policy to neutralise the issue. My point - the golden rule of politics is to never fight on your opponents' home ground. Rightly or wrongly (I'd argue wrongly), the Republicans are seen as better on this issue. Dems should stick to the issues they have the advantage at - reproductive rights, Supreme Court corruption, gun safety etc.

For John Stewart to hate straw man arguments so much he's leaning into this one. And I love Jon Stewart and Happy's back I don't know why everybody is so happy to have millions of immigrants and we're not taking care of own people. Minimum wage, healthcare, home prices, suppression of wages. And we want to bring more people into that? That's asinine!

US could work with Mexico to give those waiting to cross the border & just on the other side of the border housing, education, & medical to keep any health outbreaks & crime low while they wait for citizenship/asylum cases to go through. They could get ESL & skill training, immunizations, getting signed up for relocation to new "settlements" (probably innblue states) once their cases go through so they can live near resources specific to immigrants & live in communities with others of their culture where their career experience can be used &/or continue their education (a college with branches in these "settlements" to reduce impact of relocation on education). There are certainly ways to stream lime the immigration process to keep red & blue states happy & avoid having immigrants bussed somewhere by surprise.

Back in the 1950s and 60s there was a little show called "Bonanza." The series is of course remembered by many people now, particularly the adventures of Ben, Adam, Hoss, and Little Joe Cartwright, but one thing often forgotten is that one of, if not the best, episode of the series was "The Fear Merchants." Within that episode's plotline, a young couple fall in love, with the girl being White and the boy being Chinese, yet when they are caught by the girl's father and she dies during a fight between the two men, a demagogue who is running for office is determined to use the situation to gain greater power over the townspeople of Virginia City. Now the Cartwrights know of the young man who was being accused of murder and knew that he could not have killed his girlfriend and with Adam's great detective work are able to uncover the truth and help the dead girl's sister and father to attempt to save the young man's life. And though the demagogue did have his goon kill the father and winds up having his henchman killed, the sister reveals the truth, and the aforementioned monster is revealed as what he really is and the townspeople determine to deny him any chance to gain power. The episode's main lesson about standing up against bigotry and demagoguery has apparently been forgotten by some of the people who are the loudest voices against the immigrants.

The US foreign policy is so bad and their interference in other countries affairs has caused the migrant crisis in the first place. My personal opinion is that it is deflection of other terrible things the government is doing. Far bigger fish to fry when dealing with the border Make a huge stink at a dead end. They ramped up the border issue in the 80's and it is pretty much the same. Maybe deal with infrastructure , social issues, energy., jobs, inflation, rent, homelessness, healthcare.Things that matter to the country.. WallStreet does not help, more of a leach. There is no money left after the Military Complex, Banks and corporations, other countries.. The rest of the money is like loose change lost in a couch. And a free for all on who gets to divvy what is left. And there seems to be less change all the time. They need to get priorities straight. So many sound like they need a mental health check.
