NOTE: WE WILL RELOAD THIS VIDEO 2.1.19 We had something pointed out to us by Jon Milner that needs addressing regarding insulators on the wire going to the alternator. The new video will cover this. Thanks for your understanding.
F100 How To Install a One Wire Alternator with American Autowire Harness Episode 33 Manic Mechanic
We’re adding an American Autowire Harness to the F100. They recommend a One Wire Alternator. So we contacted the folks at Auto Krafters Inc. and landed ourselves a Tuff Stuff Alternator. We show how to install the one wire alternator. We talk about wire size for the 1 wire alternator.

Nice and clean! When I installed a 3G and trunk mounted my battery in my Torino, I had to use 1/0 cable and add grounds to block, tranny, and body to get the thing to start properly. It's all about grounds, grounds, grounds.

John Milner below stated my thoughts. After the correct crimp it is a good idea to solder as well getting good adhesion.

As I said to Milner, there is no call for a boot in the instructions. Nor is one included. If there had been, I would have used it. I have no way include the boot in my stash of extra parts.

OK. I didn’t say you had to do anything different I just commented that I agree with his suggestions and then I had my suggestions. What you did to me is perfectly acceptable, I have been an electronics technician since 1969 and have had the advantage of having all the correct tools for my job. When I found that I did not have what I needed and needed to get the job done I improvised. When you do it on you tube and don’t have Everything you need then someone is going to gig you for it. My main thought was that the solder joint got hot enough and let the solder flow and adhere to the wire and lug. Man I have been subscribed for a while and enjoy your videos. I would not give you a hard time, just an additional tip here and there. Thank you Sir and I am all for you, even though you are a ford person, just joking.

Hey Jeff I've found if you run a single v belt it tends to slip under a hard load, that's why I try to run 2 belts on the alternator when I'm not running a serpentine.

There are some belts (the Gatorback from Goodyear) that can hold their own, but the dual is a great way to get around the loading issue.

How do you wire a factory guage in 72 f 100 truck with this one wire alternator?
@jaredmigdal
@jaredmigdal 5 жыл бұрын
Solder is typically not recommended in such high vibration joints. Solder creates a stiff joint which is susceptible to brittle fracture failure. Just FYI. Thanks for another video!
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 5 жыл бұрын
I can see that point. I will say that this style of crimp, with a tab on the isolator and one on the wires is probably less prone to brittle fractures. And the wires are crimped. The solder is just a bit of insurance. I didn't soak it, just enough to silver the wires and stick them to the connector.

I'm surprised you didn't clock the alt so the battery terminal was away from the block.
@jaredmigdal
@jaredmigdal 5 жыл бұрын
You can’t clock these Alts unfortunately. One mount ear is designed to mount to the block/spacer and one ear is designed for the tensioner. It’s scary how close those politics lugs get to the block. I have the same concern on my FSB.

On the 390 passenger car engine the stud is clear of the block if you have an underslung alternator. I think the 360, 390 FE truck uses the over slung to potentially keep the alternator out of the water. This could cause a problem like what Dale talks about.

If any one wants or has to rotate the alternator, unfasten the two halves, and rotate while keeping the two halves as close as possible or you risk releasing the brushes and if you do. Watch ( replacing brushes in a GM alternator) the tough stuff one wire is a GM style. Good luck

I used the same tough stuff one wire and I clocked the housing for clearance and what's up with the red string?
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 5 жыл бұрын
The Alternator is clear of the block. We'll be redoing this video and replacing it on Friday 2.1.19. The red string is the red thread of fate: According to this myth, the gods tie an invisible red cord around the ankles of those that are destined to meet one another in a certain situation or help each other in a certain way. My wife and I liked the idea, and for Christmas (I know mixing our religious metaphors here) she bought us both red strings. The wedding bands also have the red line as well.

Use the correct tool is all I got to say and don't cheap out. Or even borrow one so it doesn't look like a mouse was at it. 😱 Use heat shrink tubing too. You should also have a factory rubber boot on that + lug so you don't cause any accidental shorts.

Well, two fold problem, try and get one with the larger jaws...tough on a local front. And I thought that the ones I had would do it. Wouldn't. Sinmply put, the hand crimpers are not great at this. I've done a couple of harnesses and the hand held ones can't beat the factory for crimping.

Oh oh ok, my bad I was just hearing things, like we need lumbar seats in our old ford trucks. .ppfftt.. ok you meant we are gonna throw lumber in the bed like us men do. But anyways I'm having an issue with the harness that the regulator is on, that also holds the horn wire. Are u running new horn wire from the relay? I'm trying to figure this out with mine and the 1 wire alt. Now

We're using an American Autowire kit so it is wired to the fuse panel. We did a horn wire repair on the F100 here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h6mplbiBt5rNn5s.html. As to the lumbar...I am sold out on modern creature comforts. But honestly, I was looking for a 80-96 F-150 seat to replace the whipped one in the F100 and found an XLT with a decent interior and it happened to have power lumbar. Same price as a regular seat! SOLD! LOL
