I was in Midwest City when this happened. It was terrifying... The tornado went about a quarter of a mile from my cousins house and they said their house was shaking. This is the worst storm I have been through in my life, I was visiting too I don't live there.

Do you know the saddest part is about Moore Oklahoma I grew up in tornado alley in Jerrell Texas. We had our F5 tornado there in 1997 but when Moore, Oklahoma had their tornado in 2013, the saddest part was that their sirens didn’t go off they had a time it’s just really sad. Give me a thumbs up if you like my comment.

Moore, Oklahoma is some mini tornado alley within a tornado alley. It is sandwiched between Tinker AFB and Oklahoma City. It has been hit with 9 tornadoes between 1998 - 2014; 4 of them F4 and F5; an F5 in May 1999, and F4 in May 2003, an F4 in May 2010, and this F5 in May 2013. The F5s were devastating. I lived there until after this tornado in 2013 and although I love Moore; the people are amazing, after losing my home twice in each of the F5, I decided that being in Moore is clearly dangerous. The F5 in 1999, which had the highest tornadic wind speeds ever recorded, 320 mph, lifted our storm cellar and dropped it.

The reason basements aren't common in Oklahoma is that the water table is very high here. Remember, the Great Plains were the ocean in prehistoric times. Basements tend to fill with water here due to seepage.
@MrCrunchem10 жыл бұрын
True, Even here in Chicago Suburbs basements are common but when that 24 hour rainfall comes expect severe basement flooding.

I pray to God, that I never have to see or experience being in or in the path of a tornado! I can't imagine the fear the people felt, as they knew what awaits them! To see something coming towards you, that you have no control over is a indescribable terror! May God wrap his loving healing arms around this town, and strengthen every broken heart and soul, to bring about a peace that'll heal all there wounds! In Jesus name Amen !

The sirens sound in 3-5 minute intervals with a few minutes pause as to not drain the batteries or burn out the speakers/motors. The sirens had sounded several times before the tornado got close to Moore.

It's because of cost reasons. The people who live in the Great Plains, Deep South, and Upper Midwest, where just about all of the EF5 tornadoes occur, often can't afford to have a basement built, especially in places like Oklahoma and Texas, where you almost have to use dynamite to get one started. When it's considered that the chances of a violent tornado (EF3-EF5) striking your home are extremely rare, many just think it isn't worth it.

That late siren! Straight didn't start until tornado was so big everyone in that small town already knew it was there from word of mouth or Facebook.
@Will_Russell6 жыл бұрын
Lynn Kayee here in Oklahoma anyways the sirens don’t normally run continuously, they normally run for a few minutes when a tornado warning is issued (or a tornado is spotted) and then stop for awhile, turning back on for a similar amount of time if conditions warrant.
@mnsirens3 жыл бұрын
I’m a little late, but the sirens actually sounded twice prior to the one heard in the video. They sound in increments, three minutes on, three minutes off.
@cmerton3 жыл бұрын
NOT a "small town". Siren sounding for third time. Tornado was clearly visible in Moore from the time it crossed the river - at least 10 miles. Every station in town had been on total coverage of tornado since outside of Newcastle. Thousands on the roads attempting to flee. But the siren was "late"?

Ok, two myths in one statement, gotta love it. First off, clay isn't so hard it needs explosives to break ground, a back hoe works just fine. Second, an underground basement or storm cellar is the ONLY protection from an F5. Basement walls can not be blown over. If the house is attached they can be pulled over, thats different. A basement is better protection against an F5 than a closet, but a storm cellar is the best as it has no topside walls to catch the wind or debris.
@bradleyhoskins10234 жыл бұрын
Those above ground safe rooms they have now are f-5 proof. There are pictures of them surviving this tornado direct hits. I think they are a bit .ore expensive tho.

@S.Roth9410 жыл бұрын
Who's going to pay for it? That's very expensive in places like OK and TX where the ground is so hard that you have to use explosives just so you can break ground. And even a basement won't protect you against an EF-5 tornado. The Barneveld, WI tornado of 84 and the 08 Parkersburg, IA tornado both blew foundation walls over.

That Moore tornado had to be the biggest ever in the states. This thing was spitting out F2-3 tornados all around it. I've seen what a F5 does and it was nothing like this. Probably an F10 at least. When pro chasers can't imagine it getting to them and being killed, it can only be called a monster.
