There are only 50 IMAX theatres in the world that can screen 1.43:1 IMAX format, but only 30 of those cinemas, can display true IMAX 15/70mm film print. I visited IMAX Melbourne, in Australia, the second largest theatre in the world, to discover the process of how Oppenheimer, the longest IMAX movie ever is played.
IMAX Melbourne is the only IMAX screen in the Southern Hemisphere, attracting over 27,000 pre-sale tickets for Oppenheimer screenings with people coming all over the world to see the film. I had the incredible opportunity of seeing what the process looks like, in the projection booth and the experience movie-goers get to be apart of, when visiting this amazing theatre!

Apologies for some muffled dialogue with some of my audio. It was extremely windy outside because of how large the open spaces are surrounding IMAX, and inside, those projectors are extremely loud! Some say that I'm somewhat on brand with Christopher Nolan movies experiencing slight audio issues... anyway, I hope you enjoy this behind the scenes look of IMAX!

Just watched Oppenheimer in dual laser 1.43 and again in 15/70. I highly, highly, highly recommend seeing it in film. The digital presentation was fantastic, but the 15/70 format just cannot be beat in terms of sharpness. It really is the gold standard.

I disagree, I think 70mm non film is better. They said that Oppenheimer was shot with the non IMAX framing always in mind so you don't miss any crucial information when viewing in non IMAX cinemas. I also tried both and found the 70mm non-IMAX was more preferable for me as it seemed sharper, brighter, and have better colors

I always thought that all "IMAX" locations use the same or at least similar projection technology. I went to double-check after you mentioned that Melbourne was the only location with a 1570 in the Southern Hemisphere. I watched the film at my local IMAX and It still looked impressive though, especially the Black & White sequences, they were the best looking Black & White I've ever seen in a modern film. The movie was technically excellent, hope they get recognised for their great work during award season.

It makes me sad to think that these cinemas and this format appear to slowly be on their way out. I got to experience The Dark Knight in the full on 70mm IMAX format along with a fair few other films and it was absolutely incredible. That cinema has since closed down (Millennium Point in Birmingham UK). My local cinema has an “IMAX” screen but it’s 4K and nowhere near as impressive size-wise. I'm glad that I live in Maryland, because the Regal in King of Prussia Pennsylvania is showing Oppenheimer in 15/70 IMAX, and I've never seen a movie projected from film before. And I managed to get a manager at my job to wanna do the drive with me to go see it. It's about an hour and a half drive, but I'm sure it'll be worth it. And honestly, I wish I could see Fantasia 2000 in IMAX 15/70. As a Disney fan, that'd be one hell of an experience.

LOL I live 20 mins from there. I saw Dark Knight..Dunkirk...etc in 70mm over the years. It's great but you guys are nuts driving that far. I saw people saying they were going to get on a plane to watch IMAX. And now know why all the showing are sold out for weeks. I just don't understand why the demand is for this film but all of the other Nolan movies we didnt see this crazy influx of out of staters coming in. IMAX has been out for a long time and I am not sure why people just caught on in 2023.
@chrisfratz
@chrisfratz 10 ай бұрын
@@vlcthefish I wouldn't be surprised if a good chunk of it came from the barbenheimer meme. Where Warner Brothers decided to release Barbie around the same time as Oppenheimer as a "fuck you" to Nolan, but then it inadvertently ended up creating a ton of free marketing for both from memes. Kind of reminds me of what happened with Animal Crossing and Doom Eternal. I have family up in Pennsylvania so it's definitely not my first time going to the state, but as soon as I saw that King of Prussia was getting a 1570 screening I felt like I had to try to go there because by the time I started going to the theater everything already switched over to digital projection so it's nice to be able to go see a movie protected from film. Plus Maryland got robbed when it comes to IMAX screens, we only have the smaller multiplex style IMAX screens outside of the state science center. And they aren't projecting movies there, usually just IMAX documentaries. So I'm glad I have the opportunity to experience both the giant screen, and the film.

I remember watching Dark Knight Rises maybe 4 days after it came out at that theater in 70mm in the best seat(like D17) and there was tons of room around me from lack of people. I went to a 15/70 Oppenheimer screening in IMAX Melb and can confirm that the relevant scenes do indeed fill up the entire screen. It was legitimately one of the best cinema experiences I’ve ever had in my entire life, anyone who is calling this film a ‘snoozefest’ either saw it in a shitty cinema or were expecting non-stop explosions for three hours lol

So this is where it gets a little bit confusing and technical with the "IMAX" terminology. Mission impsossible expands to at most 1.9:1 or 16:9, which is the full width of the sensor available filmed digitally. This would take up approximately 70% of the full IMAX Melbourne screen. Movies like Dune, filmed in Opengate on the Alexa 65, are digital films, that also do take up the full 4:3 screen, alongside IMAX film prints 1570MM like Interstellar, Dunkirk, Oppenheimer etc... So what you experienced wasn't necessarily a limitation of the IMAX screen, but more so the camera the movie was shot on. Most movies can only display at 2.39:1, which is less than 16 by 9, the graphic I showed at 3:45 perfectly showcases this!

seems like you saw it in "Digital IMAX" - yes the original 70mm IMAX used film (Like Oppenheimer at the Melbourne IMAX) and the screen was bigger. "True IMAX" is called 1570mm IMAX because the film is 70mm wide (as opposed to conventional 35mm film) and it has 15 perforations per frame as opposed to 4 perforations per frame for 35mm film. I had a similar experience as you some years ago. I had seen original 1570 IMAX over 20 years ago and about 10 years ago went to an IMAX cinema again, thinking that digital IMAX would be so much better than 70mm film IMAX. I was so disappointed. And the thing is the exhibitors, while promoting "the all new Digital IMAX" didn't really tell people that the picture on the screen was actually smaller.

IMAX destroyed its brand by dumping digital 2K theaters with IMAX name all over the place. Now that I know IMAX doesn't mean IMAX 15 70mm ... what a massive rip off I have been duped. Now I really wonder what a FULL resolution film would look like.

@@DesignedbyKirk BFI IMAX well worth checking out. I lived in London in the 1970s when all cinemas had only one screen except for the Academy 1,2 and 3 in Oxford St which introduced me to arthouse and European movies. I first worked at the Classic Cinema in Piccadilly Circus which had previously been a "Circlorama" cinema in the 1960s. When I worked there (as trainee manager) the auditorium was still in a circular layout and the projection room, (which had previously contained 11 projectors), still surrounded the circular auditorium. Easy Rider had it's British premiere here in 1969 and ran for over 9 months, running continuous sessions over 10 hours every day. I saw a 1570 3D presentation at the BFI IMAX way back in 2000 when my friend was technical manager for BFI. I was lucky to get a private behind the scenes look at the 1570 projection system. I lived in Melbourne 1987-1997 (no IMAX then but my local was the Astor which was always a special treat - and luckily still is today after facing demolition a few years back). I was in Melbourne again in Jan 2020 when I saw 1917 at Museum IMAX. The trailer for Tenet was in 1570 but 1917 was in digital IMAX, which was great but a little disappointing watching the picture shrink down from 1570 to digital IMAX. It's heartening to see Melbourne has kept the 1570 projector and disappointing that our new IMAX in Wellington (Lower Hutt, NZ) is not 1570 capable.

But with all due respect, will an average cinemagoer identify between a digital format Vs. Film? They can for sure understand High Frame Rate formats, but 70mm and 1570mm? I don't think so. All they care about is the story and some action & value for money. 🤔

Fair question, it’s one of the main reasons I wanted to make this video in the first place. To show people out there interested, what the difference is. And it’s incredible when you sit down to watch it. To me, the fact that they’ve already sold so many tickets for one month of screenings, (with only one screen in the theatre), demonstrates how many people love the format
@taipoxin

The average cinemagoer probably hasn't experienced both. But once one does, you can see where there are differences. Film is warmer, more natural, and higher resolution.

Something that almost anyone will notice is the aspect ratio. In smaller formats, you're literally going to be missing parts of the background details. Obviously, Nolan would be cognizant of people not being able to see the full frame, so the details that are cut out by smaller aspect ratios won't be totally necessary, but they'll still exist.

I've been told by their team that the opening hundreds of frames are "fillers" to accomodate for handling and threading the film, plus having a visual on the projector to test footage, prior to audiences entering the theatre. Gloves can be seen used in the initial splicing process.

Man, there used to be five IMAX 15/70 theaters in Mexico, of which, three have already closed down... Two remain, but play only documentaries, whilst one of the two main and largest cinema chains in Mexico, Cinemex, has just opened three IMAX laser theaters in Mexico City. Where I live, Monterrey, a museum called: Papalote Museo del Niño Monterrey, is currently playing Hollywood features, and there's where I saw Oppenheimer, the very first C. Nolan film I see, at least in real IMAX laser. Great video, man. Hope to stay in touch.

I live near the IMAX theater they just built in Pooler, Georgia (it’s really really close to the size of this one, 23.2m by 30.7m), and it’s one of two GT auditoriums in our state. They don’t have a film projector (theater itself is a “small” family owned and they probably couldn’t justify the cost of the film projector on top of the dual 4K projectors like in this video with how few films are released on film now). They do an outstanding job of taking care of their facilities though, which unfortunately the other GT IMAX in our state can not say… That one is owned by the Regal Cinemas (theater chain) at the Mall of Georgia and it does have the 70mm IMAX but Regal cheaped out and only put one of the 4K digital projectors in it (apparently that’s something regal has done with most of if not all of their IMAX theaters). That makes it incapable of showing digital only movies in the full imax aspect ratio, on a screen that’s significantly smaller (18.1m by 24.8m), in an auditorium that isn’t in as good of a shape as pooler (and doesn’t have recliners). So would have been pick either one of the biggest screens in the world in a nicer auditorium but it’s digital (still 1.43:1 though) or see it in a worse auditorium but it’s on film (but on a smaller screen)… No clear choice for movies like Oppenheimer, definitely a clear choice for digital only films like Dune though, since Pooler is the only one of the two that can do digital 1.43:1)
