In this video I'm in Naples, in Italy's stunning Campania region. I delve into this beautiful, chaotic city to discover what makes up the unique Neapolitan culture. I also go on a delicious street food tour to try Naples's famous fried food and get to know some of the friendly locals. Naples is an ancient city with a rich history which has resulted in a very unique culture, and in my opinion it's one of Italy’s most authentic cities!

I lived in Naples from 1970-76. In 1970 I was 7 years old. I only had Italian kids to play with so I learned to speak pretty quick and in 6 years was fluent in Napolitan. Back in those days I was treated as a rock star. All the Italian kids loved me, everyone wanted to know me even the parents, so I was invited to eat at many of those kids homes because the parents wanted to meet me because I was American. Popular instantly, and I loved it. I lived in a section called Pianoura. My dad was military stationed at Afsouth but we lived off base. We traveled everywhere in those 6 years. Rome Capri Brindisi...everywhere and went to all the sites Rome Colosseum/Pisa/Pompeii you name it we went. I did not realize what a wealth of experience I was growing up in. To me as a kid, it was all I knew. Normal. From Naples, I went to Greece 1976-1981 to finish High school. My dad worked at the Greek Pentagon and we lived across the street in a section called Papagou. I also learned to speak Greek and by the time I finished high school, I already spoke 3 languages.......not because I was smart, but because of adaptation. I was blessed to have the experiences I did. Even though I was America, I grew up as a European. My mom was French from Brittany. I am now 59 and my 2 favorite foods would be a real Italian pizza or a gyro from Greece. YUM.

I challenge anyone who romanticise those small streets, to go and rent a place and live there for a year. They will soon have a different point of view. Community might be ok but it is all people have there, there is not much else and they also suffered decades of gang crime and oppression, people do not get that the south of Italy was a like warzone at times. Go to some towns in the south, you see army and armoured cars in the streets, for gang violence, it was much worse 20 years ago. Be good to show that side of things.

Gritty! Exactly the word I use to describe Napoli. We visited a few years ago - as a gateway to the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and because my father spent 6 weeks in the hospital after he was wounded at Anzio in March 1944. We had been on a tour beginning in Venice to Bellagio to Cinque Terra, Florence, Montepulciano then Naples. At the beginning, we were a bit overwhelmed but, I soon began to relish the special rhythm of the city when I got away from the busy hectic highways. Wifey never really took to it EXCEPT when she found the street of the Nativities. We barely fit everything in the Fiat!

I’m originally from Puerto Rico and have been living in USA most if my life. No one is this open in the UsA. The way the people in Naples are so open and hang out outside together reminds me a lot of my neighborhood in Puerto Rico. The things that they loved about Naples and their values were so much alike. It brought tears to my eyes hearing the elderly people talk as I they reminded me of some people that passed away in their mannerisms, stories and thoughts. I have had Italian friends and I can say none of them reflected this culture because they were too americanized. If I would have known I would have studied abroad in Italy instead.

Wepa! People in the south of Europe are friendly & seem to value the small things in life like us puertorricans. My experience with people from USA even the second gen puertorricans is they're more individualistic and into consumerism "they live to work not work to live".

modern cities are not conducive to people being open. The neighborhoods are designed for cars, the buildings are spaced out, we move much less on foot. Naples has a huge historic center, and hasn't suffered from mass immigration, so the Neapolitan spirit has remained almost unchanged Same thing in Bari Vecchia, Palermo, Catania and in the borghis (medieval towns). You've probably talked to people from the north or the suburbs, where there is less brotherhood. Once upon a time even in the north there was this way of doing things, for example in the famous Milanese condominiums with railings, which are now palaces for the rich. More than americanization, it is the economy, structures and immigrants that have changed people. The Neapolitans, for example, have never had to face problems such as the ghettoization of foreign peoples, it only happened once with the Nigerians (and it didn't end well).

You brought a tear to my eye. I'm Italian but have lived away, going home as much as I can. This comes close to being there. Thank you. This is so refreshing from many of the other vlogs where they spend most of the video telling you what they're wearing etc. One went so far as to complain the Napoletano taxi driver wanted the tourists to give him their festination in Italian! Imagine that. This, however, discovers the heart of the country - its people. It's a pity this seems to be the only video of Italy on your channel. Please, keep going.

I think this is the most authentic video about my hometown I've ever seen from a tourist. Fair play to you. It's on my favourites now. The lady at 6:30 is very sweet and she's speaking few words of Spanish, probably because you look Spanish and she tried her best as we're still familiar with the Spanish language for historical reasons. At 21:55 one of them respectfully said you are a pretty girl when they joined the video, which is socially accepted as a kind compliment in Naples (also because it's true haha). People in Naples are very friendly, only problem is that some of them might not feel comfortable speaking English or even Italian, as the main language there is Neapolitan, which is widely spoken in all informal situations, but you handled it perfectly! Been living abroad for 10y now and miss many things about Naples. So underrated and misunderstood. ❤

Was in Naples in February 2019 for the conference, also ate in this pizzeria (Margheritta was the best in my life). Even was able to speak some italian just with gestures) Always heard tourist stories before that this is just a dirty place and nothing to do there, but actually being lost in the streets alone in the evening, walking near the sea, talking to people and so on revealed the whole atmosphere. And it was pretty awesome:)

It was an amazing place, beautiful architecture, nice people, coast line, food, i even went to Pompey (that is a must if u are in Naples), and also Capri island was an surreal experience. The only thing that was kinda not what was i expecting was the garbage, there was a lot of full cans that were not transported, but in all honesty it didn't make my stay in Italy and different. I would like to recommend for you guys to visit Sicily.. my god.. heaven on Earth !
