'Tis a shame that this beautiful composition is connected to Cumberland's butchery of the Scots and the follow-up campaign of near genocidal attempts to wipe out any shred of Scottish pride. Thankfully this didn't last and Cumberland was forced to relinquish his claim on the throne; much to the benefit of the British North Americans who had enough of a struggle with their War of Independence against George III and Parliament.

Very well sung indeed - also the English pronunciation of the text was very good... What a good tune it is!! A good solid German tune, but adapted for British taste, as Handel did of course live in Britain after his German boss became the King of England.

@Sir Winston Churchil Did you not know that Handel was German? did you not know that he was court composer to the Elector of Hannover who became George I ? the first of the Hanoverian dynasty, of which his descendant is now Queen Elizabeth II ? Handel's music is very German in style, but wrote in English of course. Interesting fact...... his house in Mayfair (posh central London) is the house that Jimmy Hendrix lived in? how's that for spooky!! Still there today.

I always liked the Duke. He took a genuine interest in the welfare of his men and knew how to get the best from them. After dueling De Sax at Fontenoy it was a fairly trivial matter to squash “that cowardly Italian” and his followers at Culloden. An outstanding victory by any measure.

it's become the Festival of The Rededication Oratorio (Hanukah in Hebrew)... We have it playing softly in the background as we rise from our dinner and retreat to the living room to behold the candles (a collection of menorah) and distribute deep blue and silver wrapped gifts to the children, while the hearth crackles and the little ones play with their treasures..... Hanukah begins with the redeeming of Jerusalem by Judas Maccabeus and the Miracle of the steadfast lights... A Blessed Season of Miracles to all

Avi Greene Wow! I had no idea! And I was brought up in an orthodox Jewish family who loved classical music!!! I never even heard of the Hannukah song but just now looked it up on KZfaq and you're absolutely right! BTW I distinctly remember the first time I ever heard this melody - it was used during the last sequence in the Laurel And Hardy classic A Chump At Oxford. Well over 55 years ago when I first saw it, and I wondered what the music was from, since it differed so completely from the rest of the film score.
