Comets are fun for sure. We occasionally get exceptional ones like Hale Bopp. But even these barely naked eye faint fuzzy dots are amazing to see move night by night across the sky.

It's much much older than that! The last time it passed through the solar system was 50K years ago. It's been calculated that on this trip in, it's orbit has been altered and it's most likely going to leave the solar system and out into space never to return. If it's orbit hasn't been sufficiently shifted and it remains bound gravitationally to the Sun then it'll be more than a million years before it returns. 😎

Can you use Stellarium to 'view as the comet '?

I haven't seen that function in Stellarium. I vaguely remember seeing it in some other planetarium program, maybe Starry Night? Cool idea though.

Very similar report from me tonight. My ETX125 showed it nicely although not great skies from the back garden. I'm looking forward to some clear skies to go to a dark site with the Dob.

Had a very short window of opportunity this evening to have a look for it. It's still detectable in binoculars. I see on the internet some Australian observers are catching the first views of it.

@@StargazerMan all last week we were fighting the full moon and or clouds but i got to see it on saturday after sunset and before moon rise and it was very clear and cold. it's on the move for sure. do you think there will be another chance to see it after it goes around the sun and back out into space?

Pity. I know how you feel. We only got a few hours of clear skies on this one.

It all depends on if you can track or not and what the local light pollution level is. If you've reasonable skies a 20 sec. shot of the general area of Polaris at a high -ish ISO and wide aperture will show it as a green fuzzy dot. If you have a standard kit lens (18-55mm) then you should pick it up. The more you zoom in the more startrailing you'll capture so at high apertures you'll need to track. I use a simple wind up tracker (Omegon Mini track / MSM tracker) with a Canon and zoom lens. Nothing award-winning but it does the job.

Well, there you go. Proof you can't 'win 'em all'. Let me explain. 🙂 I actually changed the title to say 'May' to make it 'more accurate' based on a comment below about 'absolutness' in science (media). The person was saying there is no proof it ever passed Earth 50K years ago and anything with such a deep orbit from and onto space, statements about where it came from and where it's headed are all conjecture. And the thing is he's right. We can calculate very accurately the path of celestial objects, for example Halley's and determine when it will be seen from Earth again, not because of past observations, because of orbital mechanics and crunching the numbers. Obviously if some rogue asteroid crossed its path and perturbed the orbit then all the calculations go out the window. For long period comets etc it gets even more sketchy. We can make very well informed and educated guesses but anything is possible. So it's funny you commented on this after the change. Hopefully your clouds will pass and you'll get a look.

Yes. Not right now. Using Stellarium for location at Argentina, the comet only starts to become visible in the evening sky very low on the northern horizon around the 4/5th Feb. It then gets higher night by night (pssing Mars on the 9/10th) but it may be too dim at this stage.

I remember seeing the same in science class back in school. This is different in that the green is caused by diatomic carbons being created as the UV light from the Sun breaks down carbon molecules in the comets nucleus.

It's not well placed for Australia I'm afraid. For example, from Sydney it'll only start to become visible in the north from the 5th onwards. It'll be low in the North by 10pm. Day by day it gets a bit higher and will be alongside Mars om the 10th. It will be hard to find at this stage.

@@StargazerMan Thankyou. I have an app which I was able to use to find it. At this time it is virtually below our feet, on the other side of the globe. So not we’ll place at all.

It will be in a week or so but it'll be very low on the Northern horizon.

It'll start to be higher in the sky for the Southern hemisphere observers into February

I spotted it last night early in the evening with binoculars. No colour and a very faint impression of a tail. The images always show it at it's best but alas, no eye will ever see it like this.

I never thought about the green indicating C2 being formed from organic molecules found in the Comet. Yes yes we've been discovering more about the chemical composition of comets. Breaking up inorganic matter like minerals is much more difficult for the Uv radiation to decompose. Organic molecules are more loosely bound together they are infinitely more volatile than inorganics. Thanks

Yikes! That's rough. I'm just back from a quick session in the back yard where there is a bit of light pollution. Caught it in my ETX-125, it's a wee fuzzy wedge with a verrrry slight hint of green. (haven't had the clear skies long enough to go out with the Dob). Hope you've better luck soon!
