The revolving door is alive and well. Big agro money is 100% behind these laws, and one could question why it has not been dreamed unconstitutional, since it is in every sense of the "law".

Remember that, you will find out one way or the other, but i hope you find out the intelligent way by looking into and understanding the total implication of doing business with your tyrants. Then you will understand easier done than not, not only that, better done than not.. Easy to save seeds, so easy you don't even have to break a sweat.

My wife and I grow a large garden every year. No chemical fertilizer or pesticides. All natural growing. Our garden and fruits and vegetables are always commented on how great the taste and color. We give many vegetables away and we freeze many. We save and share seeds.. We will continue healthy growing without Monsanto gmo foods.

I don't think Monsanto has anything to do with this one. It looks like a power grab by the dept. of agriculture in some states revolving around the states' laws on commercial sale or distribution of seeds. The petition mentions the Pennsylvania Dept. of Ag. adopted a policy restricting the Simpson Seed Library in Mechanicsburg, PA, from distributing seeds.

wing tweet Yes. These laws are being enforced in recent years as there are so many now avoiding buying GMO and the organic movement is making an increasing presence in food purchases. People are heading to local farmers markets and the demand for organic non-GMO foods is skyrocketing. Corporations like Monsanto want to run a monopoly on the entire US food supply. Every gardener should order heirloom vegetable and fruit seeds now before new legislation bans that. Buy in bulk, store in vacuum sealed mylar and keep in a cool dry place. Even for those that don't know how to garden they should learn how and order non-GMO seeds. The way things are going there will probably be laws against selling and even possessing non-GMO seed within another 10 yrs or maybe less. Having a stock pile of non-GMO seeds would create a new black market and will very likely lead to the value of heirloom non-GMO seeds to soar in price. Order now while they are still available and cheap and buy in large bulk batches of various non-GMO seeds. They will become a highly sought after item in a few more years and will be a great investment for those who order them now.

seed sharing is a right, unenumerated. Everyone should refer to it as such, a right. Amendment IV The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.

Seed saving is really a part of our heritage. My granddad saved seed, my dad saved seed and now I am saving seed. First time I've heard of a seed library, though. Great concept!

Hi john yes this is so true! I live in Apollo pa and the state made it illegal for us to have our seed library! The library got an email saying they had to disband the seed library immediately. It was heart breaking because so many in our community worked hard to make it a valuable resource for anyone who needed or wanted seeds. We miss it so much. a few of us have still continued to trade seeds on the down low...but seriously we shouldn't have to do that at all!!

It's not government per se. It's the "responsible servants" in it that are abusing and exploiting "government" over the people. Need reformation to hold them accountable. In some states it is actually illegal to catch rain water. Now you can't share seeds. Wow. Glad I live in Canada. :)

Do we have any seed libraries in Canada ? One thing that our government is trying to do is, to pass a law that will permit them to install meters on privately own water wells. As if I needed to pay a water tax out in the boonies

I think it's time for people who are having their water taxed in ridiculous ways to begin to sue the government whenever their property is harmed in any way by "the government's" water. I mean, if they want to claim that the water belongs to them, then they should have to pay for water, hail, snow, or other damage, right?

When the "representatives" came to my place asking my opinion, I told them "Go ahead" but first, you will dig me a new well or change all my filtration system, pay for the filters/maintenance and make sure that the water is perfectly safe. I just went on and on with the jet pump and electrical bill until they just left.

crazy - I've heard of cases where GM companies have sued farmers because seeds blew across from an adjacent farm and took on their land. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monsanto_Canada_Inc_v_Schmeiser as a 'case' in point :)

I just got two rare yellow meat watermelons from a friend of mine. His family has been growing these melons for generations. He told me to save the seeds for my farm. So he didn't give me the seeds, but I still got them. No seed sharing here (not that I give a darn anyway).

This is so UN-American. This law was for commercial use, NOT for the people. In FACT it's harmful and against the people. This is agriculture, a community based tradition that no one has the right to take away. Tradition & beliefs. Commercial or government has no right to take away tradition, beliefs, clean practices that show exactly what goes into the seed, we have the right to know exactly the main source from where our nutrition comes from, and the right to learn and practice. I don't have to and I don't want to depend on commercial seeds. This is A GOD GIVEN RIGHT!

Ignoring the paper and doing special favors for people you like, that's unamerican. The American way is to experiment with a solution to a problem, and when something goes wrong with a law the people raise their voices and the legislature either fixes the law or repeals it.

This reminds me of the law they past on handmade toys. I was making one of kind soft sculpture toys and selling them on etsy. The new law states that each version of a toy must go through testing to ensure its safety ($500+). Not so bad if there's one prototype, that a large company is rolling out (under a standard manufacturing process), but for home-crafters it means every single item would need to pass testing - to legally sell. Not many folk have heard about this law. Just amazes me the absurd shit they come up with to shackle us deeper into the System. Just have to IGNORE them. They're a bunch of idiots and - THERE'S MORE OF US!!!! xoxoxoxo

FYI, Texas used to have a grain silo program in like the 1900s, that was seen as a competition to federal currency and was shut down. Basically farmers could store their extra grain or seed and get credit for it. It was a really great thing. It was helpful for the farmers that couldn't always sell extra grain, but also protected them on off seasons.

Ok, I HATE GMO and HATE Monsanto. But that's exactly what is forcing me to be devil's advocate here. If anybody can walk into a seed library and make a donation... what stops them from donating seeds that are GMO? If I walk in and take some of these seeds, how will I know they aren't GMO??? Also, what about hybrids? Someone might donate seeds from an awesome pepper that happens to be an F1 Hybrid. As everyone here knows... F1 Hybrids may be sterile. Or if not, the seeds they produce don't breed true, meaning you might end up with a really gross pepper plant. I'm all for open-pollinated, heirloom varieties and the sharing of them. However, I would NEVER trust one of these libraries since there is no way to know what I'm really getting. And if the seeds aren't fresh, the germination rate could be quite low (depending on plant type of course). I might trust my 60 year old aunt May to supply seeds, but not an anonymous seed bank. Sorry John, it just seems like people are outraged for the sake of being outraged.

I didn't know about seed libraries, and I have one in my town. I wish I watched this video a few days earlier, I could have saved $20 on seeds but now there is another reason to go to the public library in my town.

Hi John! I really enjoy your videos and always get a ton of information out of them. I live in Minnesota and am a Master Gardener and a Master Recycler and Composter for our local county. I am in these programs to do exactly what you are doing and that is to promote and educate people on the benefits and joys of gardening and being good stewards of our beautiful planet. I signed the petition on this issue but I also wanted to update you on how legislation is progressing here in our fine State. John you rock so hard! Just borrowed from my local (15 miles away) seed library in Orange last week. are there issues with plants that cross pollinate and their products come out well, different than the original plant - should that be addressed when returning seeds?

This is so important. Thank you for your service on the topic. I think if laws are to get involved. The makers have to support this social service. Witch they aren't. I hail you for your efforts.

I can recommend to watch TED talk from Jaime Oliver in regard to adverse developments with the wrong food! John you are so important for spreading the key message (literally back to the roots) and that there is an alternative to be able to lead a good life! Our children should not die before us with all those processed unhealthily things that surround us for mere profit of corporations.

Its not just about the seed itself. When Government gets involved into it, they look to ways to make the fruit or vegi bigger and faster. They care not if it tastes better or if it held it nutrients...more money...

I am watching this in 2017 and never knew any of this, I have been sharing and trading seeds of all kinds with a person in France!! I write "flower and vegetable seeds" on the customs form on the pkg and it gets to them with no problem!

Good news ! In Pennsylvania, seed libraries are legal. Regulations apply to commercial growers, not person to person exchanges. Swap those seeds folks !!! 😀Ron KMercer PA

in a rational intelligent world looking towards the future where people may have to survive an feed themselves even to make ends meet. it seems we need knowledgeable people like you working closely with government to bring about the changes and to teach others to teach others. good show wish I had some land to mold into a garden. must be very rewarding.

I bought tiny plastic envelopes into which I can put small amounts of my many types of seeds. I label them with a sharpie and tape about 20 of them to a piece of nice paper which fits into a standard postal envelope. These could make great gifts to family members. As long as it's legal.

In my state, we have seed libraries at every library branch. Kudos to the folks who organized it in Hawai'i.
