Interesting history of the Charleston Gray watermelon. As a kid growing up in Central Missouri during the 1960s and 70s, Charleston Gray watermelons were just about the only type of watermelon available in the supermarkets of my hometown. Now, you rarely see them in supermarkets, or even farmer's markets, presumably because people prefer seedless varieties. That's unfortunate, not only because of the rich, sweet flavor of Charleston Grays and its fine texture, but also because of its large seeds, which were perfect for watermelon seed spitting contests!

Everyone please remember to give a thumbs up for these nicely presented videos!! Giving a “thumbs up” helps the KZfaq algorithm understand that we enjoy this content and then will hopefully place these videos in others video feeds. Thus by us thumbs upping we can hopefully get more people interested in growing rare and wonderful items from Baker Creek. Just by a simple action we can try to help contribute to saving plant species!

Fabulous history. And so cool that I just stumbled on this video. I can never grow anything viney in my yard cuz I have fusaruim wilt. It kills anything with a vine. Peas, cucumbers, cantaloupe. Well after watching this I'm going to try Charleston grey watermelon. My yard will give it a run for its money.

Try adding sulphur to your soil. It could be lacking and sulphur naturally helps with fungus and molds. Also try beneficial fungus to help build a diverse biology in soil for competition. Trichoderma is one that fights pythium and fusarium but many will out compete and build a beneficial relationship with certain plants.

Any idea where to find an English translation of that old agricultural text? What where the three times to water you think?
@RareSeedsBC
@RareSeedsBC 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, and thanks for your question. We have not been successful in finding an English translation of Ibn al-'Awwam's Book on Agriculture. It was translated into French and Spanish; we referred to the French translation for our research. Hope this is helpful!

@@RareSeedsBC yes actually, Spanish version could be useful for me any clue where to find that? Did you learn what those 3 critical times were?
@RareSeedsBC
@RareSeedsBC 4 жыл бұрын
Alas, it would seem that the Spanish translation is out of print. I'm only able to find it through rare book sellers. Both the Spanish and French translations were completed in the 19th century. Here is a little more information about watering. Hope this is helpful. Water is run a first time into the furrows to provide enough moisture for the seeds to germinate and the seedlings to grow, well protected from the gusty dry winds of the desert. When the young plants start to crawl above the edges of the furrows, leaves are removed from the bottom half of the plants and soil is brought to cover the bare stems, reversing the pattern of beds and furrows. The newly formed furrows are then filled to the top with water. The plants will grow, their roots following the water. Due to the scarcity of water, furrows are only filled with water one more time when fruits start to develop.

@@RareSeedsBC thanks, 1st and third make perfect sense... trying to visualize the 2nd watering and what is meant by reversing beds and furrows, i think I get it but not certain
@steveegbert7429
@steveegbert7429 3 жыл бұрын
@@Xxfades321xX I think that means that the seeds were planted in the furrows, then once growing from the first watering, the soil from the beds were brought into the furrows to build up around the plant stems, thus turning the furrows to beds and the beds to furrows.
